After getting their independence back they were soon stuck in the middle of the Turkey civil war. Then
they joined the NATO and became full member of the European nation while bringing along a couple of
islands they have taken from mainland territories. In 1974 they became democratic governed

The Greeks believe that a persons fate is predetermined and that their lives sum up their actions and
destiny, not even gods could escape. They also believe in gods and throw big festivals and have private
alters which offer food and wine.

Theyre Eastern Orthodox Christian Church has made a big impact on their lives. It affected their history,
art, literature, and music where all transmitted through the church. If you want ot run for president you
cant unless you belong to the orthodox church.
6. Are rites of passage in this country similar to or different from rites of passage in the U.S.? Explain
your answer using specific pieces of evidence.
They dont have any serious rites of passage but they have their young people undergo religious rituals
like baptism, first communion, and marriage. They however dont celebrate communion and there is no
confirmation like the Roman Catholics.
7. What tips on interpersonal behavior might you give to an American who is about to travel to this
country? Provide at least three.
Make sure if youre invited to a diner that you take a piece of bread because the more bread you take
the better, its given out at every meal. Also, theyre really into sports such as soccer and basketball so if
youre invited to play the polite thing to do is to play. Lastly, they dont really have colleges so
everything they do is based off of their high school diplomas.
8. Is the standard of living in this country better, worse, or about the same as that of the U.S.? Justify
your answer with at least three pieces of evidence.
Theyre similar to the U.S. because they very on their infrastructure and have similar buildings to the
U.S. They have apartment buildings and houses, they also have believe in public transportation such as
buses, cars and subways. They also have high income for doctors because theyre always needed.
Theyre very into their own health.

Family is very important the men dont marry till 28 and the women dont marry till 26. They have
legally gotten rid of dowries on marriages and they live at home till married or till theyre able to get
a place on their own. It is not uncommon for a couple to live with one of their parents till they get a
place and when they do and their parents are too old to care for themselves they move into their
childrens house, even when their children grow and move out they still care for each other as if the
kids where still there.

They dress more modern but when folk dancers come out theyre dressed just like the 19

centuries did
with the tunic, vest, and pleated skirt.

facts.
They mostly serve some sort of Mediterranean Cuisine with bread at every meal. They also make sweet
pastries and relax with a glass of ouzo wine.

12. How might your educational experience in this country differ from the schooling you receive in the
U.S.?
A little less than half of the Greeks are high school graduates. Theyre known as illiterate if one doesnt finish the
six-years of primary school. Education is for nine years until the age of 15. After that they can choose to take 3
more years. Their university system is very competitive, and so are technical and vocational schools. The system is
state-run and free of charge.

13. What cultural influences or accomplishments is this country best known for? List and describe at
least three.
They have been given the books Iliad and Odyssey from the famous author Homer. They also have Greek
sculptures that show nature. Also, they started many political effects like the Greco-Italian War, Civil
War, and Military Regime.

14. Summarize the overall economy of this country in 2-3 sentences.
Greek is one of the least industrialized nations out of all of Europe. Food, beverage, and tobacco
processing are the most used jobs in factories, also textiles and clothing, metallurgy, chemical
manufacturing and shipbuilding. An important part of the economy has been family-owned small
businesses.

15. How do people of this country spend their leisure time? List at least five activities. Would you want
to live there?
Greeks do a lot, they weave, knit, embroidery, carving, metal work, and pottery. I would because even
though they arent completely industrialized they still do what they can to make a living off of the land
and its truly inspirational that they can do so much with so little.

16. List (in order of significance) what you feel are the three biggest problems that this country needs to
resolve.

HIV/AIDS and drug abuse are a big problem, the amount of drug users doubled since 1980.
Marijuana is the most frequently used drug. A major domestic problem in Greek society is illegal
immigration. Homelessness is exceptionally low, due to strong family ties.


17. Are all people treated equally in this country? Why or why not? Explain your answer using specific
evidence.
They are mostly equal because they are all close in family ties. Someone is related to someone who
knows someone who is married to someone. They all tend to be close and all there for each other. No
one is more into a job then others since they all work together to reach one common goal. Everyone
also lives in an apartment building for the most part and some live in houses.
