1. What is management?
Management is the process of reaching organizational goals
by working with people and other organizational resources. It refers to the
tasks and activities involved in directing an organization or one of its units:
planning, organizing, leading and controlling. Management as defined by
Mary Parker Follet is getting things done through people. It is the act of
getting people together to accomplish desired goals and objectives using
available resources efficiently and effectively.

2. What are the major functions of management?
The four major functions of management are planning, organizing,
leading and controlling.
Planning is the function where an individual or organization
identifies its desired objectives or goal. This also involves thinking though
the possible ways and strategies of reaching the desired goals. It enables
an individual or organization to work out ways of using his resources in
order to reach his goals.



Organizing involves assigning tasks to various individuals or groups
in the organization. It is the process of creating a structure which would
help facilitate in achieving an organizations goals.
Leading means guiding the activities of the organization members
in the right direction in order to improve productivity and meet
organizational goals. It is the crucial function of motivating the members
to perform the needed tasks in order to get them to achieve the
organizations goals.
Lastly, controlling is the process by which a person or organization
consciously monitors performance. If there is any problem this is the
function that involves making actions to correct the problem. It ensures
that the work actions done by an organizations members are in line with
the organizations standards.
