TASK ONE: MATHEMATICS
PATHWAY
Actions for a more sustainable future.
Focus:

1. What did I notice on the
eld trip?

2. How are people using the
environment in a sustainable
way?
Actions for a more sustainable future reect values of
care, respect and responsibility, and requires us to explore
and understand environments.

What is sustainability?
Sustainability could be dened as something that is
able to be maintained or to sustain itself.
Living sustainably: we can live within the means of
our natural environment, ensure our lifestyle doesn't
harm other people (social and cultural).
When I think about sustainability, I think about
where the products and services that I buy/use
come from, where the waste goes, what impact my
consumption of products and services has on other
people and animals.

1. What did I notice on the eld trip?
Environmental Economic Social
Only one 'green' area.
Cost of maintaining
facilities?
A few schools in the area.
Grafti, vandalism,
rubbish, areas appear run
down.
Cost of grafti removal,
repair vandalised sites?
Limited availability of free
community space.
Several bus stops in the
area.
Research into facilities
youth in the area would like
to see?
Empty spaces or sites which
could be transformed in to
community spaces.
Two areas designated as
shopping strips and one
fresh produce.
Would a community garden
be benecial in the area?
There is space to establish a
community garden.
2. How are people using the
environment in a sustainable way?
Shopping facilities Recreation Other facilities
Lots of parking available,
even though shops are within
walking distance of homes.
Playground facilities
available, but no one seen
using it during the day.
Several bus stops in the area
and petrol station located at
shopping centre.
Lots of availability of take
away/convenience food - sh
& chips, pizza, subway,
Chinese ...
Walking track around
Cowies Creek, but no one
seen using it during the day.
Power station located next
door to old (now empty and
vandalised) secondary
school.
Also has laundromat, post
ofce, newsagent, dry
cleaners, chemist.
Paid facilities (Leisuretime
Centre, swimming pool our
of eld trip route)
Several churches (variety of
denominations)
Free facilities - Cowies Creek
and surrounds (playground,
graftied skate park)
Scout Hall, St Laurence and
Salvation Army buildings.
Looking at the local area I noticed there didn't appear to
be a lot of pride in the area. For example,
1. Grafti and vandalism in a variety of areas
2. Rubbish/pollution in and around the creek
We walked past a very large number of homes, but less
than half had solar panels.
An observation - It didn't appear that all of the people
living in this area were using the area in a sustainable way.
It would be interesting to see how many family homes
recycled, had a worm farm/compost heap, had veggie
gardens etc.
TASK TWO:HISTORY
PATHWAY
Liveability of the local area.
Image sourced from
google images
Focus:
How liveable is the 3214 area?

Consider the following:
Amount of trafc
Access to shops
Access to schools
Access to public transport
Litter
Noise
Trees, gardens, parks
Paths and street lights

Explain how the local
environmental characteristics
can affect the liveability of a
place.
Map of eld trip route taken
There are a number
of facilities available
in the area:
Shops
Kindergarten
Primary/
secondary school
Day care facilities
Public transport -
buses
Park area
Paths
Street lights
Here are some of the facilities which make the
area more liveable:

There is one kindergarten, one day care
centre, and one primary/secondary school
in the area.
There are two shopping precincts: one
smaller set of shops and a shopping centre.
There are a number of bus stops in the area.
There are a variety of places of worship,
accommodating a variety of denominations.
There is a recreation precinct - a paid facility
which can be be used by sporting groups,
schools and individuals at a cost.
There is a play ground with up to date
equipment.
There is a walking track around the creek as
well as three small skate bowls.
There is adequate parking around the
different facilities.
There are foot paths and street lighting to
ensure people can access the areas
surrounding the homes.
There are a variety of housing options:
brick/weatherboard/bro-cement houses,
units, ats, single and double storey
residences.
There are medical facilities: chemist, doctor,
dentist, health fund provider in the area.
Here are some of the facilities which make
the area less liveable:

There is a electrical power substation
adjacent from the old secondary school
site.
Whilst there is street lighting, it is poor in
some areas, reducing visibility when
walking at night.
High levels of grafti and vandalism in
the area, from spray paint at the skate
bowls and on fences to extreme
vandalism and damage to public
property.
Litter present on footpaths as well as
around the creek area.
Maintenance of signage (promoting the
only free facility) was in poor condition.
There was not an excessive amount of
noise in the area, however, a train passes
through the residential area, and would
create a larger amount of noise during
this time.
There are a number of factors which impact on the
liveability of an area. This area has both positive and
negative factors. There are areas which could be
addressed to make this area more liveable, without
impacting too heavily on the environment.

Questions I would like to ask the youth in the area:
1. Outside my family home some of the things I most
like to do in the Corio/Norlane area are ...
2. I really wish that in Corio/Norlane I could ...
TASK THREE: COMMUNITY
PATHWAY
What I would change to improve the local area.

Focus:
What would I change to
improve the local area?

Provide three suitable
recommendations.

1. Community Garden
If you are looking for an activity that people of all ages can enjoy, has a positive impact on the environment,
and encourages people to take pride in an area, I believe a community garden would be a good investment
in the local area.

The community could nd a patch of land to host a community garden. Local people could be invited to
participate in helping plant, harvest and enjoy the produce. This would also encourage people to
incorporate more healthy foods into their diets. It would also encourage people to take pride in the area
because they will have worked hard to establish the garden.

This would also be good for people who do not have a lot of land space (in their back yard) to have their
own veggie garden, or to plant the variety of things they might like to plant. It also means people don't have
to worry about pets getting in and digging up their gardens.
Schools could also be involved in building the gardens,
as well as planting and harvesting what grows in the
garden. This would mean some kids and young adults
might be less likely to vandalise the area because of the
hard work they put in to creating it. It would also
mean that there could be a constant supply of fresh
healthy food for the school canteen.

2. Promote sporting facilities in the area
There are two main sporting facilities in the area, both which can be
used at a cost to the community.

The swimming pool and gym (outside of the walking route) provides a
day care facility so parents with young families can still use the facilities.

The Leisuretime centre hosts a variety of sports such as badminton,
basketball, futsal, netball, squash, racquetball, volleyball, taekwondo,
karate, roller derby, street soccer, and Zumba.

I think it would be good for the young people in the area to be more
involved in sport. I think it would mean there are less people roaming
the streets, possible causing damage to public facilities and private
property.

Because it can be expensive to be involved in sports programs, I think
there should be an opportunity for students to try out the different
sports, for free, and then they can see if they would like to be involved
in them on a more permanent basis.

I believe there should be a trial period for a few weeks each year where
people could come in and try the different sports. Because people
change as they get older there may some sports they don't like as kids,
but might like when they are teenagers.
One example of what is being offered at the
Leisuretime Centre is this:
Netball is a great way to stay t,
meet new people ... and it isn't
just for girls.
What needs to happen: promote more of the
sports available. If possible run free clinics to
get more people involved, otherwise let people
sample them at a discounted price.
3. Increase access to exhibitions and galleries.
There is a public library outside of the walking route. This
provides access to a wide range of books and multimedia (CDs,
audio books) as well as access to computers and the internet.

Not everyone is interested in being involved in sporting groups.
One thing I believe is missing is access to exhibitions and galleries
in this area. There is an art gallery in Geelong, next to the library.

Unless you go into Geelong, you are missing out on some
wonderful experiences.

I believe there should be a facility which offers young people (as
well as people from other age groups) the opportunity to see art
work, photography, sculptures, and possibly have people who
volunteer their time to show people how to create their own art
works, take photographs or improve their techniques.

I believe having people volunteer to run the programs would
mean that there we're be minimal cost involved for people to use
the facility. I also think there are a number of people in the local
area, possibly even retired people, who have lots of knowledge
and skills they would happily share with others.

This is the site of the Leisuretime Centre. There are a large number of
sports available to try here. Schools hire out the facilities and a number of
sporting clubs hold their sports games here.

There is a car park as well as space to park buses.
This is the site of the old Norlane High School. It closed a few
years ago, with the students moving across to what is now the
Goldsworthy campus of Northern Bay College.

The site has been empty for a few years and as a result has become
victim to copious amounts of grafti, vandalism, and even res.
This used to be known as Norlane
West Primary School. It is now the
Peacock Ave Campus of Northern
Bay P-12 College.

The school has changed a lot of
the last few years. Some buildings
have been removed and new ones
erected.

There is an oval, which cannot be
used at the moment as it requires
improved drainage and grass to be
laid.
