"Black Beauty"
Chapter 9

5- "I don't know who eats your oats , my friend, but I doubt that your horse gets any of them."

Answers
1- Reuben Smith was an excellent driver who worked as a groom for Lord Gray. He was gentle
and clever with horses. But he had one fault, he sometimes drinks too much.
2- Reuben Smith , who was drunk rode Black Beauty too fast even though the horse had lost a
shoe. Black Beauty fell badly, damaging his legs and Reuben Smith was killed. Black beauty
wasn't blamed for that accident.
3- Because Black Beauty's legs looked very ugly and so it was no longer suitable for fashionable
family.
4- His next owners generally, work him too hard and feed him too little.
5- It was said by the gentleman farmer who was warning Mr. Barry his neighbour, that
somebody must be stealing the oats he provided for his horse, as Black Beauty was in surprising
poor condition this showed what a good judge of horses he was, he understood them much
better than Mr. Barry did.

Answers
1- Jerry Baker was a small man, but well-made and quick in all his movements. He lived in
London and was a cab driver. He bought Black Beauty at a horse fair.
2- He used it for pulling a London cab.
3- Jerry Baker was a kind owner . He gave Black Beauty a long rest , with good food, before
making him do some light work.
4- It was said by a gentleman who used to take Jerry's cab to a cart driver when he saw the
cart driver whipping the horses hard , even beating them around the head.
