TESTING 1 : MACKINTOSH PROBE TEST

OBJECTIVES
- Mackintosh Probe test is carried out to determine the bearing capacity of soil. The
result obtained from the test provides a rough estimation of the strength of the soil layer
at a point.
BACKGROUND
- Soil strength is defined as the ability of the soil to carry the load applied. The strength of
soil is often related to the main characteristic of soil such as cohesion and angle of
internal friction.
DETAILED PROCEDURE
APPARATUS
i. 1.2 m long and 12.5 mm diameter steel rods
ii. 25 mm diameter steel cone
iii. onnectors
iv. !ammer set
v. Measuring tape
vi. "od e#tractor
vii. halk
INSTRUCTION
a. $t the bottom of a steel rod connect steel cone and put the hammer set at the top.
b. $t the ground surface on the point to be tested% straighten the steel rod
perpendicular.
c. Mark the steel rod used chalk &ith measuring every '.( m length.
d. Take the hammer and lift to the ma#imum position and release.
e. To the rod to penetrate '.( m% count the numbers of blo&s.
f. )or the numbers of blo&s for every '.( m penetration% record the data and fill into
the Mackintosh Probe test form.
g. *n the final '.( m remove the hammer set and connected a ne& steel rod on top of
the original rod.
h. $t the rod mark again for every '.( interval% repeat the same &ork process and
continue &ith the hammer blo&s.
i. Should be stopped &hen the blo&s +
a, "each -'' times for '.( penetration because the soil has high bearing
capacity% or the depth of penetration reaches 15 m. using boring test to
re.uired detailed site investigation.
/. $fter they have been used% clean the steel rods% steel cone and connectors.
