The story of the war in La vende

The Violence felt by the Refractory Clergy during the Reign of Terror.
"Fifty-eight individuals, known as refractory priests, were shut up in a boat on the Loire; las night
they were all swallowed up. It is a true revolutionary stream, that Loire!" - 124

Correspondence of J ean-Baptiste Carrier

Jean-Baptise Carrier was the French Republics representative in Nantes, an area which rebelled in the War
in the Vende.

In a recommendation sent to the Committee of Public Safety, Carrier recommends the sending of an
army through the interior of Britany stating that "He should...by well planned accidents burn the
churches, give effective chase to all refractory priests who are still there... The Peasants thus
isolated without churches, tocsin, priests, or squires, would only think of ploughing their fields
and paying their taxes." - 191
