Compare how teenagers are represented in the action/fantasy genre looking at The Hunger Games and The

Amazing Spiderman.
GOOD WILL BEAT EVIL
THE AMAZING SPIDERMAN-
PLOT- The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker, an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by
his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben and Aunt May. Like most teenagers, Peter is
trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. As Peter discovers a mysterious
briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents' disappearance - leading him
directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr. Curt Connors, his father's former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a
collision course with Connors' alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and
shape his destiny to become a hero.
Peter Parker is represented firstly as a shy, independent, quirky young man who doesnt seem to fit in. The
young geeky boy got into regular fights with the school jock Flash. Peters whole life changes after going into
his fathers old science lab and being bitten by a genetically altered spider, which then gives him strange
powers. He then starts falling for the pretty, sweet, geeky science lover Gwen, which is bad news for him as
hes awkward and shy around girls. Peter then tries to help the civilians of the city. However, Gwens father,
Captain George Stacey who is the head of police in the city. He does not see Peters alter ego Spider Man as a
hero, he sees him as a criminal which is not Peters intentions. The population of male teens are represented
through Peter Parker in an awkward, non-athletic, shy, geeky fashion. This however may not be the case for
the majority of the male population.
Gwen is the love interest, the beautiful, sweet, kind, young girl. The male audience would find her appealing
due to her features of being pretty, blonde and smiley. Gwen is interning in the science lab where Peters
father used to work. Gwen is an easily led character who would do anything to make people happy, therefore
can become easily attached. She also has strong feelings towards Peter and admires what hes trying to do but
she worries about his risk of injuries. The tension between her father and Peter puts her in an uncomfortable
position.

THE HUNGER GAMES-
PLOT- The film we are studding is The Hunger Games which is an action fantasy film. For the 74
th
annual
hunger games Katniss younger sister Prim was picked in the reaping so Katniss volunteered herself in Prims
place. The Hunger Games is a reality show run by The Capitol. A blood bath feud between 24 people, one
survivor and the winner takes all. In the film The Hunger Games Katniss Everdeen is the main character. Each
district going up to district 13 has to have 2 tributes selected for the annual hunger games. Katniss little sister
Prim-Rose was selected, so Katniss then volunteered herself in Prims place.
Katniss is represented as a feisty, strongly opinionated teen. Her sarcasm and lack of manners make it hard
for the other characters to like her and to understand her, but really its just a cover to try and cover up how
worried and scared she is on the inside. Katniss is represented as a strongly opinionated, feisty teen who
seems to have uncontrollable love for her little sister. Her sarcasm and lack of manners make both the other
tributes and the capitol hard to like and understand her, but really shes just covering up how worried and
scared she is of the possibility of not making it back home. Throughout the film her inner personality is
revealed to let out her caring, sweet, kind side. This is shown when Rue and herself become allies, and then
unfortunately Rue dies, leaving Katniss in hysterics. The audience then understands how caring Katniss is when
she takes the time to make Rue look beautiful by collecting flowers and placing them around her, as a tribute
Rues district. In reality shes a kind, mature girl who would do anything for her little sister Prim. Katniss tries to
keep everyone out because as soon as you let your guard down you are exposed to anything. Katniss is
created to appear as a female role model. To let young people look up to a strong, powerful, independent
woman lead, when stereotypically its a male who takes on that lead. I feel using Katniss as a female role
model is a good thing because in todays society young girls are bombarded with stick thin, blonde, fake
women and these young girls look up to them. In The Hunger Games I think the way Katniss doesnt care about
her appearance and how shes such a tomboy works really well because shes not pretending to be anyone
else and in my opinion more female leads should be created similar to Katniss.

Peeta is represented as a kind, sweet, good-hearted boy. His funny mannerisms make people instantly like
him. Peeta announced his love for katniss but throughout the film its not sure whether hes playing up to his
audience or whether hes being genuine. Peeta has neither strength nor charisma but he has charm and
likeability. Peeta has strength, creativity and likeability. He used to decorate the cakes in his parents bakery,
and because of this he now knows how to camouflage himself, this also saves his life. Peeta is in camouflage
when Katniss finds her, after finding out both tributes from a district can survive, but unfortunately Peetas leg
is extremely injured. They are now re-united and known as the star-crossed lovers. Peeta then goes on,
playing to his strengths getting the audience to like him by acting so in love with Katniss. Peeta realises that he
has neither high strength nor charisma but he has charm and likeability. This, along with his charm are the only
thing getting him sponsors and keeping him alive.
Rue is the youngest ever hunger games tribute. Her shy, sweet, mouse like features makes her easily likeable.
The audience may find it easy to connect with a character like Rue because of how sweet and vulnerable she
is. Katniss and Rue become a duo but Rue then gets killed. Katniss then shows her inner kindness and shows
her respects for Rue by covering her with flowers and making her look beautiful before she salutes to district
13 and carries on. Rue has a heart-warming personality which makes the audience very emotional when she
gets killed. Rue is the shy, sweet, tiny, twelve-year-old tribute from District 11. The agricultural district. She
can run from tree to tree and is wonderful with mockingjay bird calls. Despite her size, she scores a surprisingly
high "7" during her training sessions. Rue reminds Katniss of her sister, Prim. Katniss acts as the protective
guardian of Rue once the two become allies. In a way she continues the role that she formerly played with her
sister. Katniss and Rue share food, supplies, and stories about their lives. Rue begins to mean a lot to Katniss
and not simply a competitor. Their brief friendship during the Games allows us to see Katniss as a nurturing
character, even in the midst of all the fierce competition. After Rue's death, Katniss honours Rue's body by
covering her with flowers. This shows the Capitol the idea that Rue's death wasnt just entertainment for an
audience at home. Ultimately, Rue's death inspires Katniss to fight all the more against the Capitol and win
the Games any way she can.
Cato, from District 2, is the strongest and most threatening male tribute in the Hunger Games. He is Katniss's
main competition. Cato is a Volunteer Tribute from one of the wealthiest districts, who has trained his whole
life for the glory of the Games. For him, the Hunger Games are not so much a death sentence but a shot at
lasting fame. Cato is the last survivor along with Katniss and Peeta. Cato is an extremely vicious, cruel,
monstrous killing machine. Being trained from a young age Cato has no cares for other people but himself and
his victory. Throughout the film it is evident that Cato is the one expected to win, down to his strength,
capability and sheerly because he has no morals or limits. Cato suffers a particularly slow and agonizing death
at the hands of the Gamemakers' pack of mutant dogs. The Game makers refuse to step in and end his
suffering and play up the entertainment value of his death, but Katniss steps forward and shoots him to put
him out of his misery, once again showing her vunerable side. His death signals that even the wealthiest
tributes are no match against the Gamemakers' cruelty.
