The design strategy proposed for Katlamara includes a synthesis of a rich innovation
driven product creation that is informed by both local needs and the potential export
markets that can fetch high value and large volume business opportunities. The
local markets are however the starting point since the rural community has much to
learn about business transactions in a globalised economy and about the nature of
competition and challanges that they are likely to face in the world markets. The local
products and experience building phase that this can provide are the stepping stones
on which they can build a strong base of sound technical and design values as well as
market support systems that bring satisfaction to their customers.
The locally available bamboo in Katlamara can therefore be fashioned into a wide
range of artefacts and these could be launched to serve needs of nearby towns and
cities such as Agartala. The population of the region can support a substantial
bamboo based industry which can help many frst time entrepreneurs to set up
their small and micro enterprises and through these learn the art of business of
manufacturing. This is a huge learning experience and the challange of the initial
years is the building of local capability to deal with the complexities of industrial
production and distribution at a reasonable proft. From this experience base they will
