1. Count the number of clauses (subject + verb)
in the sentence.
2. Determine whether each clause(s) is a main
or a subordinate clause.
3. Look at the tables below to determine how
the clauses should be joined.
Simple sentence
one independent clause.
Compound sentence
two main (independent) clauses joined by a
A) coordinator
B) conjunctive adverb or a
C) semicolon.
Complex sentence
has one independent and one (or more)
dependent clauses. There are three kinds of
subordinate clauses:
A) adverb clause
B) adjective clause and
C) noun clause
Compound-complex sentence
is a combination structure that has two main
clauses and one (or more) subordinate
clauses.
