Hi every one,
For our October film we will be showing 'SAVING Mr BANKS.
This is the untold story of how the Disney classic Mary Poppins made it
to the screen. When Walt Disneys daughters' begged him to make a movie
of their favourite book, P.L. Travers Mary Poppins, he did not realise that
it would take 20 years to keep his promise, then he has to overcome Travers
reluctance to use cartoons in her story

PRESIDENTS REPORT
Welcome
On Tuesday the 14
th
September 2014 we held a General meeting and I must
confess I was very disappointed with the attendance. We have 500 members
and only 21 attended this meeting . This is very disheartening for the
Committee who give so much voluntary time for you, the members, and
more so, when members were spotted having coffee together in Australia
Fair when the meeting was in progress. Twice a year we hold meetings
March and September - and whilst we know meetings can sometimes be
boring, they are necessary, as this is when you can have your say.

This month I will outline a few points made at the meeting:
Ira Dawson was our special guest who once again gave us an update of
happenings in Southport. Thank you Ira. Dawn Crichlow our Patron was
unable to attend due to Council commitments.

Myra, Alice, Jeff, Maureen and I have been out to various associations
including Southport Park Shopping Centre to promote U.3.A. Gold Coast Inc.

We have once again been asked by Federal M.P. Steven Ciobo to be part of
the Expo to be held at Jupiters Casino on Wednesday 5
th
November 2014.
This is a great opportunity to also see how other associations work and also
to listen to the various guest speakers.

Myra Dawson will be stepping down from organizing our guest speakers.
Maureen Leishman will take this role next year so any suggestions, please
see Maureen. I would like to thank Myra. She has done a great job
organizing speakers and sometimes having to cancel at the last minute
because of lack of interest. A reminder: when attending a guest speaker
afternoon, please let the speaker finish first, and ask questions later. Please
do not talk to the person next to you while the talk is in progress. Thank
you.
Due to unforeseen circumstances we have to cancel the Volunteers Lunch
until further notice. This lunch was to have been held on Wednesday 15
th

October. We apologise for this cancellation. ( Cont. on page 3)

SOCIAL NEWS
TRIP TO BRISBANE BOTANICAL GARDENS

On September 10, 16 U3A members were very happy in their decision to join
in the Botanical Gardens bus trip organised by the Social Committee.

They enjoyed the peace & tranquillity of the azalea filled Japanese Garden;
the moist, earthy smell of the tropical plants house; the arid ambience of the
desert cacti, and the fernery with its exotic fronds. Whilst on the bus ride
around the gardens they were able to view shrubs, plants & trees, all native to
the State of Queensland.

A break for lunch in the light filled, waterside, tree ringed Gardens cafe
was most enjoyable ...followed by a visit to Mt.Coot-tha to view Brisbane,
the river and all the surrounding suburbs, was an outstanding feature of the
trip.

The following letter was received by President Joan:
Dear Joan,
As mentioned to you this morning, I wish to congratulate the
ladies of the Social Cttee.for organising such an enjoyable day
out to the Botanic Gardens and Mt.Coot-tha yesterday,10
September. It gave us the opportunity of visiting these beautiful
gardens without the stress of driving to Brisbane and finding our
way around the gardens unassisted. The Guide, arranged by our
Cttee. was excellent and gave a very good overview of all that is
there to be seen.
My thanks to all concerned for organising this excursion.

Sincerely, Patricia Pickup

WALKING FOR PLEASURE
Lovely sunny spring morning for this very easy walk at Paradise Point. After we had
all assembled at the Paradise Point Yacht Club car park, we proceeded under the
Ephraim Bridge; then along the Paradise point Picnic Reserve.
At the end of the Reserve, we walked under the Sovereign Island Bridge and
proceeded along The Boardwalk to the end of the point. At the Salacia Apartments
we headed back along the side of Boat Harbour to the Paradise Point shopping
centre, where we enjoyed coffee and sandwiches at the Alora Cafe.
Our next walk will be on Saturday 11
th
October 2014, when we will walk from
Burleigh Heads to South Nobby Shopping Village. Meet at 9.00 a.m. at Australia
Fair entrance, Scarborough Street, Southport.

Many of our volunteers unfortunately have the flu, get well soon and so we
can all get back on track again.

Co-Ordinators Report:
The countdown to Christmas has started and guess what we have 13 x
weeks to Christmas Day, and 11 x weeks of classes! Time to get the
annual time-table organized for the November newsletter, and members
please note there will be two, maybe three, new classes for 2015.
Expressions of interest for these new classes are on the office notice-board
should anyone be interested to put their names down for next year.
HOW TO WRITE POETRY - WORLD HISTORY - (and hopefully!) TABLE
TENNIS. TRIVIA at this stage, will remain bi-monthly until we are sure of a
regular number of members attending. LEARN THE GUITAR we require at
least six names to begin this class.
All members please take note all classes remain on the same time-slot, day
and location unless a cancellation is inevitable. When renewing your
membership from November for 2015, please make sure you fill in whatever
class/es you are attending, or intend to attend. Some classes are restricted
to a set number of attendees, and it is not fair when someone chooses to
walk straight in without first having their name down. Some do tend to
forget, or they just dont bother. The name of the game here is
consideration for the receptionists who try to keep the paperwork in
order. Spare them a thought.
With Jan currently out of action for some time we are hopeful of a good
recovery for her some things may take just a little longer to get done, but
get done they will.
Till next time, enjoy!
Class Co-Ordinator, Alice.

VICKS VAPORUB INTERESTING

Some of us have used Vicks VapoRub for years for everything from chapped
lips to sore toes and many body parts in between. But Ive never heard of
this. And dont laugh, it works 100% of the time, although the scientists who
discovered it arent sure why.
To stop night time coughing in an adult as we found out personally, put Vicks
VapoRub generously on the soles of your feet, cover with socks, and the
heavy coughing will stop in about 5 minutes and stay stopped for many,
many hours of relief. Works 100% of the time. More effective than even
very strong prescription cough medicines. In addition it is extremely soothing
and comforting and they will sleep soundly.
Just happened to tune in A.M. Radio and picked up this guy talking about
why cough medicines in kids often do more harm than good, due to the
chemicals in them. This method of using Vicks VapoRub on the soles of the
feet was found to be more effective than prescribed medicines for children at
bed time. In addition it seems to have a soothing and calming effect on sick
children who then went on to sleep soundly.
My wife tried it on herself when she had a very deep, constant and persistent
cough a few weeks ago and it worked 100%!! She said that it felt like a
warm blanket had enveloped her, coughing stopped in a few minutes. So
she went from every few seconds of uncontrollable coughing to sleeping
cough-free for hours every night. If you have grandchildren, pass this on. If
you end up sick, try it yourself and you will be amazed at how it works.
TRY IT THE NEXT TIME YOU HAVE A BAD COUGH. THE ONLY THING
YOU CAN LOSE IS YOUR COUGH.

The computer swallowed Grandma,
Yes, honestly its true!
She pressed 'control and 'enter'
And disappeared from view.
It devoured her completely,
The thought just makes me squirm.
She must have caught a virus
Or been eaten by a worm.
I've searched through the recycle bin
And files of every kind;
I've even used the Internet,
But nothing did I find.
In desperation, I asked Mr. Google
My searches to refine.
The reply from him was negative,
Not a thing was found 'online.'
So, if inside your 'Inbox,'
My Grandma you should see,
Please 'Copy, Scan' and 'Paste' her,
And send her back to me.

This is a tribute to all the Grandmas & Grandpas, Nannas & Pops, who have
been fearless and learned to use the Computer.........
They are the greatest!!!

Larry watched, fascinated, as his mother smoothed cold cream on her
face. Why do you do that, Mummy? he asked. To make myself
beautiful, said his mother, who then began removing the cream with a
tissue. Whats the matter, asked Larry Giving up?
