Many thousands of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
service men and women have fought for our country from the
Boer War onwards. A common passion and love for this
country is where differences were set aside and cultures
were united. Unfortunately the stories of Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander diggers are rarely acknowledged in the
fabric of Australian history.

Thank you for responding The ATSIDMQI (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
Dedicated Memorial Queensland Incorporated) committee
has been formed to ensure that the sacrifices of these men

Class Coordination Notes

Semester 2 Attendance Sheets notified when students join a class during

As part of our on-going process of streamlining
and computerising our administrative procedures,
members will notice new style Attendance Sheets
in Semester 2.
These sheets will be pre-filled with students’
names and contact details as well as class dates,
public holidays and other special event days.

occur in order that our Data Base is kept up to date. If
this is not done, we cannot accurately keep track of
who is doing what, where, and with whom, nor can
confidently let other Members know whether or not
there is a space available in classes they wish to join.

conditions. Please note that the following procedure is in place if there is a need to call for an ambulance:

TO REQUEST AN AMBULANCE AT U3A AUSTRALIA FAIR

1. U3A to telephone 000 to request an
ambulance for a Member.
Describe symptoms and any other
information that you will be asked for.
Advise for the Ambulance to enter via
Scarborough Street and use escalator to
arrive at U3A.
2. Go to Australia Fair Centre Management
Office and advise them that an Ambulance
has been requested for a U3A Member.
Security will then come to U3A to check on
situation and possibly meet the Ambulance
and usher them up to U3A.
3. You may need to contact the Member's family
to advise of situation.

If needed for small accidents, the FIRST AID BOX is kept in the cupboard
in the Committee Room.

Meet Elaine

A little about Elaine - New Zealand born in 1928, Elaine moved to the Gold Coast 30 years ago from New
was a school teacher, including tennis, in Auckland Zealand, and decided not long after to become a member

We need RELIEF RECEPTIONISTS to fill in on Reception at our

Australia Fair Office when our regular receptionists are away on
holiday. The hours could either be 9.00am to 12.30pm for the
morning shift, or 12.30pm to 3.30pm for the afternoon shift.
Our receptionists are U3A's front line contact with the community
which is a most important role. Full training is given because you
have to be aware of the overall aspects of how U3A functions.

 ‘ We are Gold Coast ’ – Community Event

The Gold Coast City Council held a
community event ‘We are Gold Coast’ on
Saturday 9 June at the Community Centre,
Lawson Street, Southport, and U3A Gold Coast
Inc were invited to have a table to promote
our Association.
It was a very successful day with signing up new
membership together with quite a number of
genuine enquiries.
We were also given the opportunity to put on a
demonstration of one of our classes, and Jenny
Broughton, Tutor of Yoga B, accepted the invitation.

along Orleigh Street with only some quaint
bungalows left.
Good thing we reached the West End Jetty just
as the City Cat came into moor, and then WOW!
We were greeted by a very handsome young
deckhand, fit and strong with a pleasant manner
- he received flattering comments from us, and
then he replied "I am not Superman, I just look
like him"!
It was nice to sit back and relax and
take in this interesting area of
Brisbane and to see where we had
walked.
When we reached South Bank, we looked for a
place for lunch, but we pick the wrong one - that
we will forget.
Ten of us attended this walk - we said goodbye
to two, and eight of us returned on the Gold
Coast train.
We look forward to our next walk in August.
