ABSTRACT

The rate of water pollution in the environment due to the effect of leaching or erosion of
poisonous chemicals like lead to the earth is becoming alarming; hence there is need for the
production of water filter for the removal of microbes and heavy metals in water. This
research work was targeted at producing ceramic water filter from Ikere clay for the removal
of microbes and heavy metals for home use. The various materials used in addition to the
clay are charcoal, cullet and snail shell. The materials were ground, mixed in varying ratios,
and used to form a filter medium and fired to a temperature of 950
o
C. The filter medium
produced was used to filter polluted water and it was discovered that it can be used to remove
microbes and heavy metals e.g. lead in water.
