Cylinders

Volume
What is volume? And how is it
different than area?
Area is the # of square units it
takes to cover something. (2
dimensional)
Volume is the # of cubic units
it takes to fill something. (3
dimensional)
Vocabulary
• Volume: the number of cubic units
needed to fill something
• Prism: a 3-dimensional figure
named for the shape of its bases. A
prism has 2 bases. The 2 bases are
congruent. (equal) EX. A box
• Cylinder: has two circular bases.
EX. A soda can
Formulas
• To find the volume of a prism, multiply
the area of the base (B) times the
height (h) of the prism.

• We have to find the area of the base 1st ,

(area formulas) then multiply by the
height.
• “B” will change depending on the shape
of the base of the prism.
