HOW TO GET AN APPLICATION
WHAT IS PROVIDED?

The Hansen Summer Institute on Leadership and
International Cooperation will provide to all college
age participants:
1. Accommodation and meals for the duration of the
program, with shared rooms with participants of
the same gender.
2. Transportation to/from the campus to all meetings
and activities.
3. Program materials.
Non-U.S. Students also receive:
1. Round trip international air travel from the
participants home town to San Diego, California.
2. Health insurance for the duration of the program.
3. Certicate of attendance at the Hansen Summer
Institute.
All students will need to check with their own
Universitys advisors and departments regarding
academic credit for their participation.
The cost of an international passport.
Costs associated with the U.S. visa application and
interview at the U.S. Embassy or U.S. Consulate.
The cost of a U.S. visa.
Academic credit for participation in the Hansen
Summer Institute.
DEADLINE
Completed applications must be postmarked by
JANUARY 12, 2014 for NON-US students.
The deadline for U.S. students is
FEBRUARY 16, 2014.

Funded by a generous grant from the Fred J. Hansen
Foundation, the Hansen Summer Institute will take
place in San Diego, California and provide a unique
leadership experience and program in international
cooperation. For three weeks, ve young American men
and women will join with fteen students from a variety
of developing countries and regions of social strife.
A primary goal of the program focuses on creating an
international community of college-age scholars who will
use their summer experience to foster lasting friendships
and acquire a common practical understanding of a more
peaceful future.
Program elements involve classroom instruction as
well as training in the latest leadership skills of conict
resolution, mediation, public speaking and cross
cultural education. Classroom training complements
local excursions to San Diego historical attractions and
cultural events, such as the Mayors office, the U.S.-
Mexico border, Sea World, the San Diego Zoo and a
harbor cruise.
Hansen Summer Institute training provides partici-
pants with hands-on tools for resolving conict for
application and re-direction to their own situations at
home.
Participants will, in addition to strong academic skills,
ideally have demonstrated their potential for community,
national or international leadership.
All selected participants will learn, work, and live
together at the University of San Diego for the duration
of the Hansen Summer Institute. The Institute will be
conducted in English and, for non-U.S. students, requires
proof of prociency. The program covers all student travel,
food and lodging costs.
Participants leave The Hansen Summer Institute with
a new vision based on cooperation, mutual respect, and
an appreciation of diversity.
Selected fellows can become social entrepreneurs.
The program features a 2-day International Social
Venture Workshop at San Diego State Universitys Lavin
Entrepreneurship Center. Peer to Peer Coaching and
Service Learning are combined to help students make
their social venture ideas investor ready. The Hansen
Fellows will help decide which ideas receive grants.
Participants will come from every continent of the globe.

The Hansen Summer Institute on Leadership and International
Cooperation is an exciting international program at the
University of San Diegos School of Leadership and Education Sciences
ELIGIBILITY
To participate in the Hansen Summer Institute,
candidates must meet the following eligibility
requirements:
Demonstrated commitment to community,
national and/or international public service.
U.S. STUDENTS

Be an active student in good standing, at a


California based University.
NON-U.S. STUDENTS
Be under 25 years of age with at least two (2) years
of college/university, or a graduate student in good
standing

Have an academic advisor verify, in writing, the


candidates English prociency.
Have a valid international passport, with US visa,
if necessary, by the time the program begins.
Preference will be given to those who have never
visited the United States.
Be under 25 years of age with at least two (2) years
of college/university at the undergraduate level or a
graduate student in good standing.
