Main products offered by Juniper include T-Series, M-Series, E-Series, MX-Series, J-Series routers,
EX-Series Ethernet switches and SRX-Series Security products. JUNS is the operatin! syste" that

1. Juniper J3Series routers are a series of enterprise routers called as "odular
routers for enterprises runnin! des%tops, ser'ers, 5o62 etc applications and
these %ind of routers are typically deployed at re"ote offices or branch
locations.
. Juniper M3Series routers are called Multiser'ice Ed!e routers desi!ned for
enterprise and ser'ice pro'ider networ%s.
+. Juniper T3Series routers are a series of core routers desi!ned for hi!h-end

The central principle of the Juniper Networ%s platfor" centers on a separation of the control and
forwardin! planes within the router. These are Routin! En!ine and 2ac%et ;orwardin! En!ine as
shown below.

The Routin! En!ine is the central location for control of the syste" in a #uniper networ%s
router and it consists of an 6ntel-based 2<6 platfor" runnin! JUNS software. The Routin!
En!ine constructs and "aintains one or "ore routin! tables. ;ro" the routin! tables, the
Routin! En!ine deri'es a table of acti'e routes, called the forwardin! table, which is then
copied into the 2ac%et ;orwardin! En!ine.

The power button can be used to power the ser'ice router on and off. The power BE@
located at the upper left of the BE@ dashboard is !reen color when on and it can be in two

which "eans power button has been pressed and &uic%ly released and the router is shuttin!
down.

This button is used to return the router to either the rescue confi!uration or the factory
default confi!uration.

Throu!h the console port, a RJ-,/ serial cable can be used to connect to the routin! en!ine
and the router can be confi!ured usin! <B6 fro" the chassis console port.
USB .ort
The US= ports on the front panel of the router accept a US= stora!e de'ice or US= stora!e
de'ice adapter with a co"pact flash installed and can act as a secondary boot de'ice if the
internal co"pact flash fails on startup.

There are two user interfaces to "onitor, confi!ure, troubleshoot and "ana!e a ser'ice
router. They are JUNS <B6 and J-web 6nterface.
5.+.1 JUNOS Co11"n( Line Inter#"$e
JUNS <B6 is a Juniper Networ%s <o""and Shell that runs on top of a UN6X-
=ased S Eernel. The <B6 pro'ides co""and help and co""and co"pletion
and co""ands are e1ecuted when Enter %ey is pressed.
The <B6 has two "odes perational "ode and <onfi!uration "ode. The <B6
co""ands are or!aniCed hierarchically with co""ands that perfor" a si"ilar
function !rouped to!ether under the sa"e le'el.

J-Aeb is a web-based 7U6 that allows operatin! a router without co""ands. 6t
allows to "onitor, confi!ure, troubleshoot, and "ana!e the router on a client by
"eans of a web browser with :TT2 >:yper Test Transfer 2rotocol? or :TT2S
>:TT2 o'er Secure Soc%ets Bayer? enabled. Duic% confi!uration wiCards
si"plify basic confi!uration and "ini"iCes the ris% of error.

26Ms supported for J-Series are cate!oriCed into u26M, e26M.
2.2.1 .IM
26M >2hysical 6nterface Module? is a networ% interface card that is installed on
a J-series Ser'ices Router, to pro'ide physical connections to a B9N or a A9N
2.2. u.IM ?Uni4ers"! S&it$,in- .IM@
u26M is a particular type of 26M, such as the 7i!abit Ethernet u26M, which can
be uni'ersally inserted in any slot on a J-.-+, J-./+, J,./+, or J0./+ Ser'ices
Router.
The difference is e26M slots has 2<6 and 2<6-X bus connection whereas 26M
slots only has 2<6 bus connection. 9 u26M either uses the 2<6 or the 2<6-X
bus dependin! on what slot the u26M is installed in. Naturally better
perfor"ance is e1pected with e26M slots.
2.2.+ e.IM ?En,"n$e( .IM@
e26M is a particular type of hi!h-speed 26M, such as the 7i!abit Ethernet e26M
or ,-port ;ast Ethernet e26M, which can be inserted only in hi!h-speed slots

Ser'ices Router?.

7i!abit Ethernet u26Ms are a'ailable in four 'ersions i.e, *-2ort, ,-2ort, 3-2ort,
*0-2ort and are supported on J-.-+, J-./+, J,./+ and J0./+ ser'ice routers.

7i!abit Ethernet u26M can be inserted in any slot on J-.-+, J-./+, J,./+ and
J0./+ ser'ice routers. :i!h-speed slots are slots . and 0 on the J,./+ router,
and slots -, ., /, and 0 on the J0./+ router.
7i!abit Ethernet u26Ms features are
The "ultiport u26Ms can be used as switches in the access layer
Bin% speed for 3-port and *0-port 7i!abit Ethernet u26Ms is
confi!urable to *+, *++, or *+++ Mbps, and trans"ission "ode is
confi!urable to half or full duple1. The *-port and 0-port S;2 7i!abit

Ethernet u26Ms cannot be "anually confi!ured-they are set at *+++
Mbps and full duple1.
*-port and 0-port 7i!abit Ethernet u26Ms use S;2 transcei'ers to allow
different connectors to be used on u26M ports. These S;2 7i!abit
Ethernet u26Ms support *+++=ase-SX, *+++=ase-BX, and *+++=ase-T
S;2s. They do not support *+++=ase-B: S;2s.
3-port and *0-port 7i!abit Ethernet u26Ms-and S;2s on the *-port and
0-port u26Ms-support *+++=ase-T RJ-,/ connectors. The li"itations are
that 7i!abit Ethernet u26Ms do not support SNM2 and the interfaces
can be confi!ured up to a "a1 MTU siCe of 4+*, bytes.

Transient 6nterfaces are the interfaces that recei'e user$s data pac%ets fro" the networ% and
