EFFECT OF PLANTING DENSITY ON DIAMETER STRUCTURE OF
BLACK POPLAR CLONES S6-7 AND M-1 (section Aigeiros (Duby))
Abstract: The parameters of diameter structure of two black poplar clones in the
section Aigeiros Duby (S6-7 and M-1) are presented depending on three different
spacings: 33 m, 4.254.25 m and 66 m. Modelling of diameter structure was performed by Weibulls function of probability distribution. We determined the effect
of spacing (density) and clone both on the parameters and on the model diameter
structure.
Key words: poplar clones, planting density, diameter structure, modelling, Weibulls distribution

EFFECT OF PLANTING DENSITY ON DIAMETER STRUCTURE OF BLACK
POPLAR CLONES S6-7 AND M-1 (section Aigeiros (Duby))
Summary
This paper presents the parameters of diameter structure of two black poplar clones (section Aigeiros Duby) in the plantation with different spacings, as well as the potential of diameter
structure modelling by Weibulls function.
The study clones are S6-7 and M-1 and three different spacings (treatments): 33 m,
4,254,25 m and 66 m. The experiment is located in central Danube Basin in the protected part of
the floodplain on the soil type fluvisol. It was established by deep planting to the groundwater level at the depth of 2.5 m by two-year old rooted cuttings (type 2/0).
The study results show that mathematical model of diameter distribution (Weibulls function of probability) is well adapted to the empirical data of the study black poplar clones: S6-7 and
M-1, so its potentials in poplar.
The effect of planting density on diameter distribution parameters in black poplar clones S6-7
and M-1 was confirmed after seven years of plantation development. In the seventh year of development of Clone M-1 plantation, planting density causes the diameter distribution cluster in three
groups. As for the clone S6-7, diameter distributions group in two groups: one group with the densest spacing (33 m) and the other group with spacings 4,254,25 m and 66 m. Diameter distributions of trees are statistically significantly different at the planting densities 33 m and
4,254,25 m, while at the planting density 66 m the study clones have similar diameter distributions. The larger sizes of the clone S6-7 (Populus deltoides), compared to the clone M-1 (Populus x
euramericana), as well as the better diameter structure, indicate that the clone S6-7 in the first seven years has a more intensive growth.
