DuringourpresentationgiventoboththefourthgradersandJuniorclass,wepreparedtwo

activities.Thepurposeoftheactivitiespracticedwiththefourthgradeaudiencewaysforthemto
seefirsthandwhatboththefishermenandthevaquitagothroughwhentheyareintheocean.

Activity#1:

Introduction:

Thekidsareactingasiftheywerethefishermen.Whenthefishermenarefishingtheycantsee
whattheyarecatchingsowhenaVaquitaiscaughtinit,thefishermenarentawareofthis.This
activitygivesthekidstheperspectiveofthefishermen.

Supplies:
Water
Tanks(variesonamountofpeople,tryforthreetoatank)
Rocks,pebbles,smallnonfloatingobjects(symbolizeshrimp)
Floatingfish,orotherfloatingobjectsaboutaninchtohalfaninchinsize(Symbolizethe
Vaquitas)
Cupswithholescutoutinthebottom/nettocatchfishwith
Blindfoldsortellkidstoshuteyes

Setup:

Fillthetankswiththewater
Addtherocksinside.
Addthefloatingfish
Putthecups/netnexttothetanks

Howtodotheactivity:

Thekidsaretryingtogettherocksthatbottomofthetankwithoutgettinganyofthefloatingfish
usingthecupswiththeholesatthebottom.Whiletheyaredoingthistheyeitherhavetheireyes
closedorblindfoldedwhiletheyarefishingfortheshrimp.Oncetheytakethecupoutofthe
watertheycanopentheireyestoseeiftheydidntcatchanyofthefloatingfish.Theobjectiveis
togetallrocksinyourcupandnofloatingfish.

SixVolunteers
Timer

Activity:
1. Askforvolunteersfromtheaudience
2. Formallbutoneofthevolunteersinacircle,facingthecenter
3. Instructeachvolunteertoputbothhandsinthecenterofthecircle.
4. Makesureeachvolunteergrabsanotherpersonshandwiththeexceptionoftheirown
andthatofthepersondirectlynexttothem.
5. Allvolunteersclosetheireyes.
6. Everyoneinthecircleclosetheireyesandtoremainsilentuntiltheendoftheactivity.
7. Thepersonoutsidethecircleistoinstructeveryoneinthecircletountanglethemselves,
formingaperfectcirclewitheveryoneholdinghandssidebyside.
8. Thatpersontriestountangleeveryoneelsebeforethetimeisup
