The Moon Project

What was supposed to be so special about a full moon? It was only a big circle
of light. And the dark of the moon was only darkness. But halfway between the
two, when the moon was between the worlds of light and dark, when even the
moon lived on the edge...maybe then a witch could believe in the moon.
Terry Pratchett, Witches Abroad

A long time ago people believed that the world is flat and the moon is made of
green cheese. Some still do, to this day. The man on the moon is looking down
and laughing.
Vera Nazarian, The Perpetual Calendar of Inspiration

We walked on the moon. We made footprints somewhere no one else had ever
made footprints, and unless someone comes and rubs them out, those footprints
will be there forever because theres no wind.
Frank Cottrell Boyce, Cosmic

The moon is a loyal companion.
It never leaves. Its always there, watching, steadfast, knowing us in our light
and dark moments, changing forever just as we do. Every day its a different
version of itself. Sometimes weak and wan, sometimes strong and full of light.
The moon understands what it means to be human.
Uncertain. Alone. Cratered by imperfections.
Tahereh Mafi, Shatter Me

Instructions:
Working in small groups of no more than 5, you are to use the above poems and
quotes as inspiration to compose 2 contrasting pieces of music about the
MOON.

Each group will have 2 keyboards and percussion instruments. If you play an
instrument such as a violin, trumpet, etc, you may bring it to music lessons and
include it in your piece. Each piece needs to be about 45 seconds long. You may
use sound effects on one of your keyboards, but no beats/DJ/keyboard
drums.

1. Which 2 quotes will your group be using as inspiration? (2)

2. How will your music reflect the quotes you have chosen? (Think mood or
emotion.) (4)

3. How are you going to accomplish creating this mood? Will you use an
ostinato? A drone? Chords? Which keyboard sounds will you use? (4)

4. What will the roles of the different individuals be in the group? Only
ONE can be the conductor.

As you begin creating and rehearsing:
-Does everyone know what and when they should be playing?
-Is everyone listening to the group and focusing as an ensemble?
-Is everyone contributing effectively to the way the music should sound?
-Have you rehearsed the ending?
