Strategy # ___5____

Strategy Name
Reading Guides

Brief Description:
Reading guides are provided by the teacher prior to a reading assignment in order
to assist with student comprehension. This helps guide the student in their reading.
Two common types are point-of-view and interactive reading guides. Point-of-view
reading guides put the students into the situation being described and ask for their
thoughts and reactions. Interactive reading guides include activities that the
students complete along with the reading which help distinguish a clear purpose for
the reading.

How you plan to use this strategy in your Practicum, Internship, Student
Teaching, or in your own classroom:

Prior to assigning reading to my students, I will hand out a reading guide. The type
of reading guide will vary depending on the reading, though in chemistry Im more
likely to use interaction guides rather than point-of-view guides.

1. As a class, brainstorm what we know about the three states of matter:
Solid / Liquid / Gas
2. Read the section in your text about solids, then work with your partner to
revise what was brainstormed about this topic.
3. Read the section in your text about liquids, then work again with your
partner to revise what was brainstormed about this topic.
4. Read the section in your text about gases, then work with your partner to
revise what was brainstormed about this topic.
5. As a class, generate what we now know about the three states of matter.
6. In groups, explain how matter changes from one state to another.
7. In groups, create a comic strip that depicts all three states of matter and how
they change.
