Spice Chungu is a training hub that equips women participants from the marginalized of
society with journalism skills, enabling them to apply ideas to diferent concepts, develop
stories and personal narratives, use their imaginations to answer mind-boggling questions and
come up with inventive ways to solve problems
!he founder, "rick #atsanza, a graduate of kanthari came to understand that a kanthari is a
very spicy chilli that grows in the backyards of $ndia and does have a medicinal value, its then
that he picked on a red chilli which is a symbol of a red kanthari ready to %ght for a world free
from discrimination, negative attitudes or harmful norms through the provocation of mindset
change in the community through advocacy $tis from this that "rick coined the name &Spice
Chungu' $n (enya we do not take chilli to be spicy but we look at it as having a bitter taste
)or lack of a better word and directly translate from our local dialect as it is, &Chungu' Swahili
for &bitter' hence &Spice Chungu'
*t Spice Chungu, women from diverse backgrounds e+ploit their creative intellect to foster
critical thinking for social change !his will be through the use of videography, photography,
graphic art, journalism, music and poetry
Spice Chungu is a women hub that facilitates use of visual and graphic arts, independent and
citizen journalism, documentary %lm and videography, photography, as well as digital and
social media as means of civic e+pression and social action
,e have a commitment to make the Spice Chungu space and resources accessible to women
at the grassroots level !his is to be achieved through training sessions and diverse outreach
initiatives geared towards catalyzing social change ,e continue to identify, train, and equip a
new generation of courageous women whose outlook will help reshape the media landscape in
(enya ,e aim to impact the society positively through our programs
