Statement of Future Plans
Electricity, researched in the 18
th
century by Benjamin Franklin. Its the directed transportation
of energy from one place to another. It is whats powering the device you are reading this on, the lights
above you, the phone in your pocket. This is what interests me. I plan to become an electrical lineman
apprentice, and soon work my way up to a journeyman.
The first step of having a career in the trade of electricity is shadowing. One would join an
apprenticeship program. Apprentices are called grunts by higher-ups. Due to the grunt work they are
expected to do. It is a hands-on program, where you are expected to assist linemen in the building and
maintaining of electrical power systems. Supervised by a journeyman, you are expected to complete
7,000 hours (nearly four years) before advancing.
There are many variations to the process of becoming a journeyman, depending on if you are
going to be a powerline contractor, work for a publicly owned municipality, or a co-op. Personally, I
want to be under PG&E, a public municipality. Here, I would undergo technical training courses, ranging
from tower and pole climbing, to underground electric fundamentals. This program is first come, first
serve.
There are many benefits of training under PG&E. A few of these are their specialized training
facilities, full with hands on equipment and classrooms, highly experienced instructors (whom are
certified in the nationally-recognized Instructor Excellence Program), and an exceptional training
curriculum that provides the best practice, with a high level of safety.

Electricity is a huge part of society, as it is a fundamental we cannot live without. I want to have
an impact in many lives, and I can do so with being an electrical lineman. I plan on applying for an
apprenticeship immediately after I graduate, and excel through the program and become an electrical
lineman journeyman.
