WHAT AN AUTOMOTIVE TECHNICIAN DOES?

Automotive Technicians (starting-level automotive technician)

Change oil and airfilters, conduct inspections, change tires, plug tires, balance tires,
change lights, etc.

Makes $25 per hour While actively working


on a vehicle.

WHAT AN AUTOMOTIVE MASTER TECHNICIAN DOES?

Has his own tools and toolbox.

1) Examine vehicles to determine extent of


damage
or malfunctions.

2) Tests each vehicle

3) Repair, reline, replace, and adjust brakes.

4) Review work orders and discuss work with


supervisors.

5) Follow checklists to ensure all important parts are examined, including belts, hoses, steering systems, spark
plugs, brake and fuel systems, wheel bearings, and other potentially troublesome areas.

6) Plan work procedures, using charts, technical manuals, and experience.

SCHOOLING AND TRAINING

A highschool diploma

Obtain formal training: such as, UTI (Universal Technical Institute), and Wyotech.

Receive an ASE Certification (Automotive Service Excellence)

CAREER PRACTICALITY

Continue working on the vehicle from the previous day.

Waiting for a vehicle to come in, do basic diagnostics to single out the problem, get
prepared to do the job, and finally fix it.

Would make about $25 per hour

Would make about $35 per hour
