INSTITUTE BRIEF

BRIEF HISTORY OF
HISTORY

ETHIOPIAN AIR FORCE

• The Ethiopian Air Force was organized by Mishka Babitchef, the first
Ethiopian pilot, who was of Russian descent
• On 31 March 1930, three of the biplanes from Ethiopia's air arm
played a dramatic role During the Battle of Anchem, biplanes were
effectively used to give Haile Selassie's forces the upper hand .
• A few transport aircraft were also acquired during 1934–35 for
ambulance work.
• The air force was commanded by Colonel John Robinson (African-
American, took command May 1935), , recruited by Haile Selassie,
and who remained until the Italian conquest of Ethiopia when the
small air arm ceased to exist.
• In 1944, a group of World War II African-American veterans set up a
flight school at Lideta airport in Addis Ababa.
• The nation acquired a few aircraft through military aid from the United
States and United Kingdom; and the school had 75 students by 1946.
• The long running maintenance and overhaul center project, DAVEC,
was also sped up and inaugurated in 2004.
Mission, Vision and Core Values of
Mission
Ethiopian Air Force

• Defend FDRE air and space from any

adversaries and confirm air superiority in
order of securing our country.
• Independently destroy operational and
strategic targets
• Providing close air support for our land and
Special Forces
• Prompt action for any natural and manmade
disasters
• Build electronic war fear and cyber resilience
capabilities
Vision

• To be one of the leading air

forces in Africa by 2030,
through innovation and
utilization of modern
technology and
professional human
resource and prompt
reaction to defend Nation’s
air territory
Core Values

SERVICE OF THE
ETHIOPIAN AIR
FORCE

 Civil and military air craft maintenance,

 Oxygen cylinder preparation and filing,
 Manufacturing and wood work,
 Construction and beauty,
 Radar and missile maintenance,
 Automotive section (the most we were
engaged during practice time)
The main services of the section I have
been working are:
•Changing engine, gear box, transmission and brake oil,
•Electric maintenance,
•Testing of fuel injector and injection nozzle,
•Tire capping,
•Battery charging and chemical changing,
•Vehicle annual technical examination,
•Engine maintenance,
•Body maintenance welding and painting
•Transport service for military activity in different part of the country,
Maintenance and transportation of damaged cares during accident.

Problems Encountered on the job

• Since, the position of gear box is not suitable for

assembly/disassembly by using fork lift there is no
substituting instrument for unloading and loading
gear box of military vehicles like ural, zille and
waze
• There is no material to remove pallet bearing from
cam shaft, especially when the inner hub and balls
are detached
• Manually detaching and re setting tire from its rim
• Lack of performance testing machine
• Lack of automatic maintenance and test material
Conclusion

• This attachment ascertains that creating strong relation

between universities and employers has great advantages for
students, universities and for the society as a whole
• Many Ethiopian higher education institutions do not create a
practical attachment chance for their students
• Therefore, conducting practical attachment is important for
students, universities, employers and for the whole society
Recommendation

• Regarding to provision of safety material and medical

facilities; our hosting company doesn’t provide safety
material for the internship students
• The dirty engine oil from different vehicle is poured simply
to land rather than accumulate it in to container
PART-II

DESIGN OF MECHANICAL
TIRE RIM SEPARATOR
Background of
study
• The primary purpose of tires is to provide
traction
• Tires also help the suspension absorb road
shocks, but this is a side benefit
• Tire maintenance is occupied in several methods
based on the tire failure such as: changing tread,
removing leakage, changing inner tube and
changing wheel
• Manual tire changers are good and considerable
for small automobiles with small tire size, the
labor effort required is affordable but for higher
truck, buses and heavy-duty trucks the tire is
larger in size and the labor effort required is
relatively higher and became very difficult task
• Today in our country in some
automotive tire maintenance
work shop when the tire
maintenance process required
separating the tire from the rim
for single rim type of the tire,
STATEMENT OF mechanic separate by using the
help of hammer and chisel to
loosen the tire bead from the
PROBLEM rim
• This separating technique is
harm full for the tire side wall
as well as for the rim, and it
takes high force and more time
General
Objective
• The major objective of
this project is to design
mechanical tire- rim
separator for passenger
car tire that can be used
in automotive tire
maintenance work shop
To design each
component of the
machine
Specific
To design 2D & 3D
Objective modeling

To prepare cost analysis

SIGNIFICANCE
OF THE PROJECT
• After the designs of this project, it
will be used for all automotive tire
maintenance shop service to
separate tire from the rim
• the design will have much
importance to the workers by
making the working area simple,
uncomplicated, safe and
environmentally friendly as the
machine creates less noise.
• The scope of this project is to design
tire rim separator for maximum tire
diameter 20 inch and to determine
the required dimensions, and
standard use materials to construct
the device it also focus on analyze
SCOPE OF the tire rim separator to check if it is
THE PROJECT safe to operate and to render visual
representation of the device with all
detailed parts dimensions and
working mechanisms
This project doesn’t include
practical testing analysis of the
design

limitation
of the The design is performed in a
limited amount of time
study
This project is limited to
theoretical analysis sine there are
no available materials and testing
tools to construct the design
LITERATURE
REVIEW
• In this manual we study with the procedures in
the tire/wheel manufacturer's catalogs,
instruction manuals or other industry and
government instructional materials
• Before loosening any nuts or clamps that attach a
tube type tire/rim assembly to a vehicle, always
completely deflate the tire by taking out the
valve core
• Use a non-flammable vegetable or soap-based
rubber lubricant on the beads and rim surfaces
to make tire demounting and mounting easier
• These changers can mount and demount tires
without the use of hand-held levers, which
relieves the stress on the beads and the operator
• This particular model can be adjusted to three
different heights to allow the technician to work
at the most effective position
Types of tires- rim separator machines

• Electric –Hydraulic Tire Changer

• Hydraulic Tire Changer
• Pneumatic Tire Changer
• Mechanical Tire rim separator
• Hammering by Man Power

Working Principle of
Mechanical Tire-Rim
Separator
• First, we remove the air from the tire before
starting
• By the help of handle and connected bar
push the tire until the loosened
• After remove the air put the tire on the turn
table
• Put the chuck on the center of rotation shaft
to keep the tire
• With the mounting head in position, spread
tire grease
• Insert the lever between the tire bead and
the front section of the mounting head
• Move the tire bead over the mounting head
• With the lever held in position, rotate the
turntable in a clockwise direction
• Continue until the tire is completely
separated from the wheel rim
• Repeat the above steps for the other side of
the tire
Cost analysis

• Cost estimation is an art or finding the cost,

which is likely to be incurred on the
manufacture of an article, before it actually
manufactured.
• This mechanical tire-rim separator has an
estimated total cost of 18,710 ET birr
• I have designed this tire rim
separator for mounting and
dismounting of tire from rim
application
• In this process i have designed

other components
All of these components are
designed by using appropriate
formulas for each also appropriate
material were selected and checked
for strength to avoid failures
I hope that this thesis gives detail
information for manufactures
about all parts machine that it
contains

In this design of mechanical tire –
