INTRODUCTION
Ethiopian airline is a commercial enterprise that provides
scheduled flights for passengers. This Ethiopian airline which
is found at Bole international Airport, consisting of three
sections such as Airline line, Airport and Civil Aviation. From
those three sections we have stayed at Airport which has
consisted maintenance, repair and overhaul(MRO), and also
MRO has sub classes such as Facility maintenance shop,
Aircraft Engine Maintenance shop, Aircraft structure shop
and Machinery shop.
At the end of this report we have designed the hydro-electric
floor jack in order to solve the problem in that shop.
BACKGROUND
• Ethiopian Airlines (Ethiopian) is the flag carrier of Ethiopia
• Ethiopian Airlines, formerly Ethiopian Air Lines (EAL), was
created by the decree of Emperor Haile Selassie I at the end of
1945.
• Firstly the Ethiopian airplane travelled to Cairo from Asmara.
HISTORY
• 1946 Ethiopian Airlines begins operations with flights to
Cairo.
• 1957 Network stretches north to Hamburg, Germany.
• 1960 Ethiopian develops Africa's first scheduled services
connecting east and west.
...cont’d
• 1961 Revenues surpass $10 million.
• 1963 First jets arrive.
• 1974 Country undergoes Socialist revolution, which affects the
company.
• 1975 TWA management contract ends; EAL introduces first
direct flights between Africa and China.
• 1991 Marxist dictatorship is overthrown in a coup.
• 1998 First services to the United States are launched.
• 2003 Construction begins on new cargo terminal and
maintenance hangar
• 2011Ehiopian Enters Star-alliance
• 2014 best Airline in Africa
• 2015-2108 Became top one from Africa
Vision
Ethiopian will be the most competitive and leading aviation group in
Africa by 2025
Mission
To ensure being an airline of choice to its customers
To contribute positively to the socio-economic development of
Ethiopia in particular and the countries
Values
As an airline, safety is our first priority.
Ethiopia is a high performance and learning organization.
We are an equal opportunity employer
We treat internal and external customers the way we would want to be
treated
• We recognize and reward employees for their performance and
demonstrate integrity, respect to other, candor and team work.
• Adopt zero tolerance to indifference, inefficacy and
bureaucracy.
• Encourage 3600free flow and sharing of information.
Current status of the Company
The company currently owns 120 aircrafts; among those aircraft
only 114 of them are working.
• 107 international destination,22 domestic destination.
• 51 cargo network.
• Employers; Marketing and Sales, 29%; Maintenance and
Engineering, 28%; Cabin Crew, 12%; Cockpit Crew, 6%; and
others, 25%.
Over All Organizations and Work Flow
BENEFITS WE HAVE GAINED FROM
INTERSHIP
• In developing professional skills on aircraft parts and
vehicles.
• In developing future career.
• Increase individual responsibility and develop strong
teamwork skills,
• Interns build up a network of professional contacts for future
opportunities and references.
• Universities can raise the level to international standards
• Increase individual responsibility and develop strong
teamwork skills
ACTIVITIES
• During internship at bole international airport in the all months
of internship program most time was spent at touring in
different sections of the factory with a constant guidance of
local Engineers.
• The factory is divided in to the following four sections and
each section has their own sub process which will be
explained on the next sub topic:
Section 1: Facility maintenance Shop
GSE(ground support equipment)
GTV(Ground transport vehicles)
Engine overhaul

Plasma welding and Tungsten inert gas welding(TIG)
PROJECT ON HYDRO-ELECTRIC FLOOR JACK
Cont’d
• In the case of a hydraulic floor jack, the power source comes
from a pump. The pump is usually mechanically or electrically
supported which can operated by means of cam and follower
powered, so a hydraulic floor jack is very powerful relative to
other jacks.
• A hydraulic floor jack's functioning is described very
accurately by Pascal's principle, which states that a force
applied to an enclosed fluid is transferred equally throughout
the entire fluid.
Statement of the Problem
• In Ethiopian airline facility and equipment maintenance
department, the most available floor jacks are manually
operated, Consume more Forces, consume much time, small
lifting height, less efficiency and lifting small weight. Thus, to
overcome this problem of drudgery, musculoskeletal disorders,
injuries, increase timeliness and efficiency in the mechanic
while changing tires braking system and carrying out some
other maintenance works beneath the vehicle prompted the
design of motorized hydraulic floor jack for vehicle must be
required.
Objectives of the project
General Objective
• Design and Modification of existing hydraulic floor jack
motorized hydraulic floor jack.
Specific Objective
• To develop the mechanism of Hydro-electric floor jack for
• To design and select material.
• To prepare detail drawing for manufacturing and assembly
process
…Cont’d
• Scope of the Project
• Among main components of motorized us design primary oil
reservoir, secondary oil reservoir, cam, and follower, check
valve, release valve, return spring, cover plate ,castors, Frame,
Leveling Arm, saddle, lifting arm, carry handle, Electrical
motor and release valve.
Working Principle of Hydro-Electric Floor Jack
• The Electric power is used to drive the A.C motor. The A.C
motor shaft is connected to the Cam and follower. If power is
given to the A.C motor, it will run so that the Cam also runs to
slow down the speed of the A.C motor. Then, after the cam
rotates the follower reciprocates, this reciprocation is moving
against the fluid then this fluid moves the screw upward so
that the vehicle lifts from ground. The vehicle is lifted by
using the lifting saddle at the top of the screw jack. The motor
draws power supply from the Electric source. The lifting and
uplifting is done by changing the electrical supply to the
motor.
Main components of HEFJ
• Reservoir
• Hydraulic pump
• Check valve
• Release valve
• Ram piston
• Cam and follower
• AC motor
• Return springs
CONCLUSION
• The internship period plays a great role to relate student’s
theoretical knowledge with practical skill. This helped us to
know our strengths and areas for improvement by
overshooting our future career with respect to our field of
study. In Bole International Airport a lot of mechanical
applications are implemented. during in our stay in this
company it helped us to develop additional skills like
communication skill, the habit of team work, practical skill,
communication skill with people at working place, creativity
knowledge about business, management skill about lead the
workers, work ethics and relating theoretical knowledge with
practical.

The project that we have taken is hydro-electric floor jack which
is A.C motor supported which is more useful in the lifting of
vehicle in the shop by means of cam and follower principle
that saves the human power and also saves the time than the
existing previously.
RECOMMENDATION
• The recommendation is regarding the preventive maintenance
and pre-installation trainings. luck of knowledge of the
technicians, only less than half of the machineries are
operating. The rest are either inoperative or have not started
operation because of lack of knowledge of these machines on
how they operate. So, every technician should be aware of the
operating mechanisms of these machineries. The technicians
should also be aware of the procedures on how to troubleshoot
the machineries.
Cont’d
• is when we designed that project it is only operated in the
work shop due to Alternator current (AC) controlled motor so
regarding on this the future generation will modify to the
portable jack that is operated by DC current.
Future Work
• There is a scope of improvement that is by replacing the
remote control with Bluetooth operating technology.
• The device can also be designed to operate using android
application.
