factory and Aremen prosperous leave it during this time. Before 25 years ago it’s including with

UNIT TWO
2.1 Management, training and employ information
Management system, specifically supervisory support, is vital for labor performance
improvement. Supervisory supports build trust in employees, and improve the effectiveness of
organization between memberships in a firm. It facilitates employees,
finds the cause and the solution for conflicts arising, and helps employees amend their faults.
When an operation fails, the employee performing that job often feels bad, loses confidence and
has no longer work commitment as before. The role of supervisor at this point will be to hearten
and allow employees feel more comfortable so that they can overcome their failure and continue
working more efficiently, and in order to head towards the true values of life.
The company is the only of its kind and all the heavy duty shoes processed are directly sold to
government organizations like the ministry of defense and police forces as well and the public
population at large. Referring to the past track records of the company, in the 1988’s it used to
Yemen and Uganda. It may as well have to look for the potential to export elsewhere.
The various types of glues are:
Vulcanizing glue
Sole glues
Lasting glue
The current number of permanent employees stands at 600 out of which 348 are men and the
remaining are women. Most of the employees have acquired invaluable skills on account of that
rich experience during their considerable years of service in the factory.
As per finance department of Tikur Abay Shoe Share Company; the productivity in the company
is not as such satisfactory after privatization. Based on this the researcher investigates the
following possible causes that possibly affect the company’s operating efficiency.
a. The average age of employees is too high and high absenteeism
b. Poor work handling techniques
c. Poor supervision and
d. Lack of modern technology and machines.
A, It is obvious that the best working years of a worker in an industry is between the ages of 18 -
40 years. But the case is different in Tikur Abay Shoe Company there are very small percentage
of the total employees were between 18 - 38 years of age. There are however 84 employees over
the age of 55 years these workers are not able to work as they were, this obviously has an impact
on their ability to function efficiently and to their full potential as when they were young, and the
absenteeism is mainly a result of being aged and it can possibly affect the operating efficiency of
the company.
The following table shows employee profile by age category
Table 2.1, Employee profile by age category
Source: personnel department of the company.
Out of the total 556 employees only 103 employees were under active age group, 201 of 556
were in a middle age category and 252 employees out of 556 were under retirement age
bracket. The following bar chart demonstrates the fact.
The above tables shows the age composition of the employee of the company in the following
proportion.
Active age( 18-38) =18.5%
Middle age(39-45) =36.1%
Retirement age bracket(> 45) =45.3%

No Age Group Total

5 46-50 168 30.2

It is highly known that workers in active age group are more productive than aged workers; but
the above figure shows that 45.3 percent of the company’s workers were under the retirement age
bracket. So that this can highly affect the company’s operating performance (productivity)
B, poor work handling is also another problem related with the poor supervision in most of the
departments this poor work handling is related to the amount of time spent by both the
supervisors and operators in the movement of work in all departments. There is too much time
spent carrying work from one operator to another.
C, poor supervision is the other factor that affects the company’s operating efficiency. As per
personnel department head; some of the supervisors were not efficient in doing their day to day
activities. So this can affect the quality of the work in each department.
D, Lack of modern technology and machines resulted poor productivity and limited scope for
product diversification. The existing machineries of the company are too old as a result there is
high spare part, repair and maintenance cost. In addition to this the existing machineries are not
modern so that they are not suitable to produce modern civilian shoes. So this makes the
company not to ensure better quality of the finished product, reduce production cost and became
profitable.
There is a lot of daily training in ASSCo companies that under takes such as:
• Military boots, civilian working boots, regular shoes including children and ladies'
shoes all in genuine leather for both local market and for export and
•Glue (sole glue, vulcanizing glue, P.U. glue, and lasting glue) to local market and for own
factory use.
•And there may be various installations and repairs for maintaining machine to its normal jobs.
2.1.1 Major duty were given to perform
The major duties I was assigned to perform
•Conducting minor maintenance
• Assisting mechanics and workers
• Inspecting the machinery during the production process
• Participating on preventive maintenance activities.
•Supporting light and heavy duty workers while they are repairing.
•If there is no job on maintenance which are related to mechanical, the supervisor assigned me to help
other skill workers like electrician.
•Knowing and obeying the working safety at any working period of time.
•Respecting and punctuating the entrance and exit time properly.
2.1.2 Become oriented with the responsibilities assigned during the internship.
The purpose of orientation with the responsibilities assigned to me is to help me and develop
knowledge and skills in matters related to professionalism and workplace issues.
It also designed to prepare me for rewarding and successful internship experience.
They oriented me to the responsibilities in such a way that:
• I should have attending departmental meeting.
•I should have to assisting a colleague with relevant task.
•Attending client visit.
•Organizing part of a training course.
•I should have attending workshop jobs and lectures.
•Testing product or tools.
2.1.3 Importance of supervisor help.
Supervisor help are most crucial for interning students in:
•Effectively train student intern and provide all necessary resources for the position.
•Developing learning objectives and goals with the student.
•Monitoring interns to ensure they are completing the assigned duties and staying busy.
•Evaluating the intern progress and provide feedback often…..
So, my supervisor helped me to succeed in the assignment were given for me by:
•Planning ahead and prepare me to attend all the time what they have doing.
• Making mine intern feel and welcomed.
• Appreciating me be a resource.
•Seating a goal for me.
•Having regular check- INS.
• Giving quality feedback.
•And help me be a monitor one.
•Developing in the academic sound.
2.1.4 Qualities develop from daily duty.
Go to the internship is a classical piece of advice given to a young people who need experience,
direction and monitor ship. Interns are often portrayed as the coffee carrying gophers of the work
place, but that is not always the case.
So the qualities I earned from this internship are:
•Field experience
•Intern at a startup and
•Service learning
1) The goals of field experience are to get students out into the field that they are studying. This not
only allows you to built experience but also lets you apply what you have learned in the class room in
to the real world. Plus, it is a great way to get knows a specific school or job site you might be
interested in joining in the feature.
Usually, student have a mentor or advisor both at school and in the field who can coach them through
difficult situations and help make the most out of their field experience.
2) One of the great complaints of an intern is that he or she does not actually get to contribute to a
company. Interning at a startup, especially an early age startup, is a great opportunity to make an
impact.
At a startup, there is often more work to be done than people to do it, which leaves a great chance
for you to do important work.
3) Service learning is used as a teaching tool that gives a student hands on skill building
opportunities through community service. Student dedicates the semester or year to one host site
and connects learning in class to experience on the job.
This is a great way to put what you are learning in the class into practice, especially if you are
considering feature careers in human service, social work, education, or non profit work.

3.1.1 Daily technical duty and responsibilities of the intern
The daily responsibilities and duty that I had during the internships are:
•Fulfilling the task set out by supervisor from several department.
•Attend meeting and take minutes.
•Running general industry related errand.
•Take notes and memos during they are talking me what they have did.
•Shadowing multiple office positions and trains in verities of tasks.
•Reviewing the company materials and machines.
•Attending company networking events.

Conclusion
This internship enabled me to gain first hand exposure of working in the real word. It also allows me
to harness the skill, knowledge, and theoretical practice I have learned in university because;
internship provides a nice learning curve for students with little experience of the professional world.
And the internship fit my careers by; people I meet during an internship can later become monitors,
sources of job opportunities and references. They may help me to develop skill and offer moral
support in my earlier careers. Building a strong network of contacts is reason enough to do an
internship.
This internship changes mine carrier goals. As a talked before, this internship enabled me skill and
knowledge and so I will change my goals by adding the skills and knowledge from mine monthly
internship to the previous one, that is it.
We all know that practical experience is the best, and the internships give students those hands on
experience they need. I feel that quality internships are essential to develop key skill that you can’t get
in a class room. Skill such as multitasking, communicating, learning to deal to diversity, and dealing
with deadline are different when you are working for someone else, not yourself like you do in collage.
Internship are also a great way to networking with people in the industry. My boss and co-workers
were great about giving me contacts and referring me to open position in the industry.
I thoroughly enjoyed my internship this summer and know have very valuable experience under
my belt. I know this will help when looking for jobs and needing references. I was dreading
beginning, but I am so happy it was required.
I have faced some challenges because we are strange for company and internship program,
also every person challenged for first time when experiencing new thing.
Challenge I have been faced:-
•Forgetting tools name
•The difference between theoretical understanding and real part.
•Lack of safety material
• Most of the work needs some force
•Revulsion at time of touching grease and oil
CHAPTER FOUR
4.1 RECOMMENDATION
I would like to recommend with regarding to mine internship for the company as well as the reader of this
document I have recommended the following things;
•The enterprise should fulfill working tools and equipment, as I have seen in the workshop employees are
exposed to different hazardous activities.
•They should fulfill safety equipment’s and machine manuals.
•Improve working area and increase number of employs lack of training for new machine workers to
understand the manual and operation.
•Old machines should be cleaned and maintained to decrease material and labor costs.
• It is better for the organization to give annually training courses for the enterprise workers.
