PART I: ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS BRIEFLY (10 Marks)

1. Explain Grashoff’s 4-bar linkage and state Grashoff’s condition. (2 Points)


2. Explain the terms kinematic link, kinematic chain and mechanism? (1.5 points)

3. Define ‘inversion’ of a mechanism. Sketch any two inversions of slider crank mechanism
giving their practical applications. ( 2.5 Points)
4. Calculate the DOF of the linkages shown in Figure 1. (4 Points)

PART II: WORKOUT (20 Marks)
In the mechanism shown below, link 2 is rotating CCW at a constant angular velocity of 10
rad/s. In the position shown, link 2 is horizontal and link 4 is vertical.
Using Vector Mathematics Method determine,
a) Velocity and acceleration of point C. (8 points)
b) Velocity of C relative to B. (4 points)
c) Angular velocity and angular acceleration of link BC and link CD. (8 points)
Link lengths: AB = 75 mm, CD = 100 mm
