The ob>et is omposed of a small

The outer petals also ontain
analogs of sarium and verterium

The petals are emitting low level
waves of gravimetri distortion* and
appear to funtion along the lines
of starship warp oils$ allowing the
reature to maneuver at warp speed
by means of variations in the
distortions!
/ number of the petals are
damaged$ possibly by disruptor

The reature<s high energy output
over a range of fre, uenies is
interfering with sans of the

So long as 1itabi stays outside short range

Decoding the Riddle
The ob>et<s transmissions are e@tremely
alien* and the 6niversal Translator will take
time$ likely hours or days$ to deipher its
meaning! This should be treated as an

work of the olony has kept him from

and longC that 1itabi destroy the intruder*
and thanks to his harm Band despite his
some freneti behaviorC is able to make
some headway swaying his fellow olonists

?ill don<t all me )illiam Grant is the

tall* fit* tanned* and weathered! Grant<s
hair is thinning in top* a fat more

man austomed to hard work!
Kuentin Stone is the town<s hief

olony* and doubles as ommuniations
offier* shuttle pilot* and general >ak$of$
all$trades! )hereas the other three men
are e@ited and e@itable* Stone is alm*
thinking* and almost dour! / dark man of
physial and intelletual power* Stone
reminds many people of Dotor Rihard
Daystrom in his prime! Though his
strength is tempered by an inherently
gentle demeanor* few trifle with the man*
and fewer still repeat that mistake!
&aed with the impending arrival of the
alien* 5sobar and Grant flutuate
agitatedly between demanding to know
what the &ederation is going to do to
protet them and Bspurred by SandhurstC
that Starfleet destroy the thing immediately!
Stone* on the other hand* is more
thoughtful$ wondering what the ob>et
might want with 5vangeline! The planet
has no resoures* no wealth* no real
tehnology to speak of! The olony is
suffiiently distant from the 1lingon border
and all ma>or trade routes as to be a
tatial and strategi non$entity! There are
no arhaeologial ruins* no subspae
anomalies* no alien iviliDations anywhere
nearby who might take an interest in the
olony$ nothing!
6nless the players speifially ask for a
profile from their omputers* they should
not reeive Handout E3 B5vangeline
SurveyC! +onetheless* the four men
arrayed in front of them will know nearly
all of the partiulars!
"f asked* the loals will protest that
5vangeline is unremarkable in nearly every
respet! Stone will point out the only two
anomalies that ome to mind The first is
the bowl$pits* the seond* the
e@tintions!
The bowl$pits are a series of broad*
shallow hollows in the planet<s rust! 5ah
runs roughly 9;; meters aross and :;$%;
meters deep* atop a thermal vent$ usually a
dormant one! The siene teams who
originally 5vangeline """ thought they might
be the remnants of an earlier* more
geologially ative period when the hot
springs were muh hotter and more
dynami! /t least a hundred have been
found within a thousand miles of 'adsen<s
=anding! Stone has personally surveyed at
least a doDen of them!
)hen Stone mentions the e@tintions*
the other three men will roll their eyes$
Sandhurst in partiular! Stone will arry on
doggedly$ his analysis of the areas
surrounding 'adsen<s =anding Band
supported by evidene gathered by others
at the other four settlementC suggests that
5vangeline """ has suffered a mass die$off of
plant and animal life roughly every five
hundred! His data is skethy* but
radiometri dating suggests that the largest
die$off may have wiped out up to %;J of
the plant and animal life on the surfae!
"n response* 5sobar and Sandhurst will
point out that Stone himself has admitted
that these appear to be loal phenomenon*
not global* and that eah of the areas
shows signs of hemial poisoning
onsistent with arbon mono@ide* and
sulfur dio@ide$ onsistent with large$sale
volani eruptions! Grant will also remind
Stone that eah of the areas he<s
surveyed has had a history of tetoni
and volani ativity$ whih supports the
5
others< laims!
'ore damning* as 5sobar points out* is
the fat that these are purely loal
phenomenon* and don<t e@plain why an
alien vessel or ob>et would be interested
in 5vangeline!

Tell Tales and Cles
6nless they have something better to do*
Stone will insist on taking the 1itabi away$
team on a visit to one of the bowl$pits!
6nless they insist on beaming* he<ll
transport them via his shuttle* a short trip*
but an e@iting one as Stone flies like a
madman$ too fast*too low*and too abrupt in
his maneuvers* but utterly in ontrol!
Stone e@plains that he seleted this

defined and leanest he<s disovered!

orbit the site twie to give the heroes a feel

Co!paring Notes
)ith all of this new data in hand* the
heroes meet bak at 'adsen<s =anding
with the town fathers! There are several
issues at hand!
&irst and foremost* irumstantial
evidene indiates that 5vangeline """ is the
reature<s natural breeding grounds$
&ederation law suggests that the reature
has priority here* Band as the olonists are
tehnially s,uattersC may well re,uire
that the olonies be evauated* if
neessary* to protet the speies! The
problem with this solution is that there
simply isn<t time or room to evauate the

starships$ the 1itabi* ?randywine* and

that the reature<s transmission was indeed
a ommuniation$ though it has insuffiient
data to determine whether or not the
reature is truly sentient or not! "f the
reature is sentient* then (rime Diretive

.n the other hand* the same
irumstantial evidene that gives the

indiates that the reature Band any fellowsC

The other onsideration the players will
