Project Part 4 February 24, 2013 Solutions to a throw-away society Institute an incentive which promotes recycling Years ago, many liquid consumable products were placed in glass bottles. These bottles were easily recycled and in many cases the purchaser paid a slight deposit when a purchase was made and would receive that deposit back when the bottles were returned. The same principle can once again be applied. Many cities now have recycling programs in affect. However, many of these programs charge the residents for use, and then receive additional compensation when they in turn recycle the collections. In my opinion, it would be more of an incentive if there was not a charge to the residents for a curbside recycling program. Organized group clean-ups Many communities have volunteer organizations that do this already. This can also be used as a community service type project as an alternative in place of incarceration for minor criminal acts. Government ban on plastic water bottles Though this would save many millions of barrels of oil in the production of plastic bottles and millions of tons of non-decomposable material placed in landfills, this idea is impractical. The cost of employment and related tax revenue to the government would be incalculable.

The best solution I feel would be the institution of an incentive which promotes recycling. Though the use of plastics is convenient, they are not environmentally friendly. Too many people prefer to dispose of these items in their trash, or to just leave them wherever they want. This solution must decrease the amount of plastic material disposed of in landfills.
