Assignment 1: Information Literacy

Sherri Matthews
1. I used the search engine Google to find the article DARPA's ElectRx Project: Self-Healing Bodies
Through Targeted Stimulation Of The Nerves. The article is about a new technology that is being
developed by ElectRx that will continuously work to cure people of their ailments. The idea is to
implant in peoples bodies ultraminiaturized devices that could hook into the brain and modulate the
peripheral nervous systems response to infections, injuries or other imbalances (Guerrini). This
emerging technology will render drug medications unnecessary. The article states that it will require
minimally-invasive [surgery and for the] ElectRx chips to be effective [they] should be as big as
individual nerve fibers (Guerrini). This new technology will change medicine as we know it.
2. I used the search engine Yahoo to find the article SpaceX wants to build cities on Mars. I then
used Bing to find the article Digital Business Technologies Dominate Gartner 2014 Emerging
Technologies Hype Cycle. I found that the Google search done to find the first article was easier
than using Yahoo or Bing. Mostly because I am used to using Google as my primary search engine
of choice and I am used the way it is set up but also because the results automatically gave me the
most recent at the top and with Yahoo and Bing I had to manually change the filter to the most
recent.
3. TRAAP for article Digital Business Technologies Dominate Gartner 2014 Emerging Technologies
Hype Cycle
Time written 9/17/2014 @ 10:07AM, no updates.
Relevance The article relates to my topic of Emerging Technologies, in fact, the exact phrase
is stated in the title of the article.
Authority The authors of the article are Hung LeHong and Jackie Fenn of Gartner, Inc. which
is a company that focuses solely on technology research; therefore, they are absolutely qualified
to write on the topic.
Accurate I believe the information provided in this article is trustworthy because the company
uses the Gartner Hype Cycle which collects and analyzes data on new technologies. This tells
me that they have done their research and the information provided is not based on pure
opinion.
Purpose The article was written to inform CIOs, business leaders and strategists to spot
opportunities as well as threats from competitors (Guerrini).

4. I found the scholarly journal articles Higher Education and Emerging Technologies: Shifting
Trends in Student Usage and Re-Emerging Technologies: What's Hot and What's Not! from the
CCBC library database. I used the same keywords here as with all of my other searches: emerging
technology. I used the database Library, Information Science & Technology Abstracts because my
topic would fall under that category of Information Science. I also had to refine my search by
choosing to see only scholarly journal articles and from the year 2014.
5. Regarding ease of access and timeliness, it was much easier and quicker to find what I was looking
for using the CCBC library databases. I did not have to bother searching through all of the search
results for a reliable source since I know that every result on the CCBC library database will only
give me what is reliable. I know that the authors of the journal articles from the CCBC library
database have the authority to write on that topic because they are studying it and list all of the
resources used for their paper. I believe there is appropriate authority when using the Internet results
as well, if not more so, because the authors of those articles have careers directly related to the topic
they are writing about. This tells me that they have even more experience and knowledge on the
topic than the students.
6. I will use MLA format to cite my sources.
