Combustion Turbine Lube Oil System
1.3 AC Oil Pumps
The basic purpose of the turbine lube oil system is to provide lubricating oil to the turbine and generator bearings. Additionally, oil is
provided to the hydrogen seal oil system and hydraulic controls fluid. Both AC Oil Pumps are in operation when the turbine is running
below rated speed, such as during startups and shutdowns.

Once the turbine reaches 95 % of rated speed, one AC Oil Pump will be shutdown, this pump becomes the lag pump. The running
pump is the lead pump and it will meet the system oil supply needs.
With the unit on turning gear, only one AC Oil Pump supplies the
needs of the oil system including lift oil.

1.4 DC Emergency Oil Pump
The DC Emergency Oil Pump acts as a backup for the AC oil pumps, and provides lube oil to the system in case of a loss of AC power.
Like the AC pumps, it takes suction directly from the oil tank and discharges to the lube oil supply header but bypasses the coolers
and filters.

1.5 Seal Oil Pump
The Seal Oil Pump and its associated AC/DC motors, supply oil to the hydrogen seal oil system in the event of failure of the lube oil
pumps and/or loss of AC power (in the case of the DC motor). Like the lube oil pumps, the seal oil pump takes suction directly from
the lube oil tank.

2.0 Lube Oil Tank / Reservoir
2.1 Oil Tank
The Lube Oil Tank/Reservoir stores all of the oil required by the Lube Oil System including the Seal Oil and Hydraulic Oil Systems.
The oil holding capacity of the tank is 6,200 gallons. The tank is the foundation for the oil skid compartment and serves as the mounting
base for the remainder of the lube oil system components. The tank and system components are housed below the turbine-generator
centerline to allow adequate drainage from the turbine-generator bearings by gravity. All drain piping is properly pitched downward to
assure positive drainage.
The lube oil tank itself extends down below the skid housing . The tank is rectangular in shape and is constructed of weld fabricated
carbon steel. The interior of the tank is coated with an oil resistant protective coating. The tank is provided with miscellaneous
connections for filling and draining. Blowout panels are located along the horizontal wall of the oil tank.

Combustion Turbine Lube Oil System
2.2 Lube Oil Tank Heater (23QT)
During standby periods, immersion heaters are used to maintain the oil at a viscosity as needed for turbine start-up. This is
accomplished by three (3) immersion heaters (23QT-1, -2 and 3) installed in the oil reservoir. Temperature switch 26QL-1 is mounted
on the side of the tank and controls the heaters to maintain fluid temperature. This switch brings the heaters into service with a
decreasing oil temperature at 70F ( 2F). Temperature switch 26QL-1 will drop the heaters out of service on an increasing
temperature of 79F ( 3F).
If the heaters fail to function and the oil reservoir temperature drops below the point where oil viscosity exceeds 800 SUS, temperature
switch 26QN-1 (located inside the tank) will initiate a low oil temperature alarm at a decreasing temperature of 56F ( 2F). 26QN-1,
if indicating an oil temperature below 56F ( 2F), will prevent a turbine startup. [Saybolt Universal Seconds (or SUS) is used to measure
viscosity. The efflux time is Saybolt Universal Seconds (SUS) required for 60 milliliters of a petroleum product to flow through the calibrated orifice of a Saybolt
Universal viscometer, under carefully controlled temperature and as prescribed by test method ASTM D 88]

2.3 Lube Oil Tank Level (71QH/QL)
Normal operating oil level in the oil tank is 19.5 below the top surface of the oil tank. A level alarm device (float operated) is mounted on
the lube reservoir and operates two (2) level switches 71QH-1 (High Level) and 71QL-1 (Low Level)]. The switches are connected into
the alarm circuit of the turbine control panel to initiate an alarm if the liquid level changes 3" ( ) above or below normal. The oil
level is also visually indicated by a sight gauge on the side of the tank. Oil drain and fill connections are located on the side of the tank
to facilitate those activities.

2.4 Mist Eliminator
The lube oil reservoir is equipped with a mist eliminator through which the vapor extractor takes suction on the air space above the oil
level in the reservoir. The mist eliminator is comprised of a cylindrical fabrication filled with a substance similar to steel wool of the
stainless steel variety.
Situated on top of the lube oil reservoir, the function of the mist eliminator is to do just as its name implies, remove any oil mist that
might be entrained in the air and/or other gasses being drawn out of the reservoir by the vapor extractor(s) prior to the discharge of
the vapors (gasses) to the atmosphere outside the lube oil accessory compartment. The misted oil is entrapped by the mist eliminator
fill and returned to the reservoir by natural gravity flow.

2.5 Vapor Extractor
The vapor extractors are small centrifugal fans (23QV-2A and -2B) that draw air from inside the lube oil tank and return piping, and
exhaust the air to atmosphere. This is necessary to remove any hydrogen that might collect in
the bearing pedestals or the oil tank, and to remove moisture-laden air inside the tank.
The vapor extractors are driven by small, AC motors (88VA-1A and -B). Flow-regulating
valves (FB1-1 and -2) on the exhauster discharges are set to maintain about 6 to 8
H
2
O vacuum inside the oil tank (with the turbine operating at base load).
Pressure switch (63QV-1) provides a low differential pressure alarm signal when there is
insufficient vacuum in the lube oil reservoir. This alarm occurs at 4.0 in H

2.6 Vapor Extractor Controls
The turbine oil vapor extractor is manually controlled by a two (2) selection positions on the turbine controls screen.
The vapor extractors are set up to run in a lead/lag configuration and are designed to run one at a time. The selection of lead and lag
extractor is made by the operator from the turbine control motor screen prior to startup. The lag extractor takes over whenever the
lead extractor has failed to run, has been overloaded or if there is insufficient vacuum in the lube oil reservoir.
If the lag extractor is started
automatically by the control system
due to insufficient tank vacuum level,
the lead extractor will be
automatically shut off. Pressure
switch (63QV-1) provides a low
differential pressure alarm signal
when there is insufficient vacuum
in the lube oil reservoir.

3.0 Lube Oil Supply
3.1 AC Lube Oil Pumps
The lube oil system is equipped with two (2) lube oil pumps (PQ1-1 and PQ1-2) to provide
the lubrication and hydraulic oil needs of the gas turbine-generator. Each pump is capable
of delivering 883-gpm of oil at a rated pressure of 110-psig. Under normal turbine
operating conditions only one pump is required to supply all of the units oil needs.
Both pumps are required during startup and shutdown.
A ball-check valve ties the two pump discharge lines to a common header, OL-4.
Pressure indicators indicate pump discharge pressure:
PI-QA-1 for pump 1 (PQ1-1) and
PI-QA-2 for pump 2 (PQ1-2)
The header takes the oil through coolers, filters,
and to the various system functions.
The pumps are driven by
vertically mounted AC motors
(88QA-1 and 88QA-2).
Additionally, the motors are
equipped with motor heaters
(23QA-1 and 23QA-2) to
prevent condensation from
forming in the motors when

3.2 Lube Oil Cooler

3.2.1 Capacity
There are two (2) 100% capacity plate type heat exchangers arranged in parallel to
remove heat from the lube oil (OL-4 from the AC pump discharge supply) before
it enters the lube oil filter and on to the bearing oil supply header. The heat
exchangers are labeled LOHX-1 and LOHX-2. Under normal operating
conditions only one (1) heat exchanger is required to adequately cool the lube oil.
The coolers are equipped with a transfer valve to allow operations to transfer
oil flow from one cooler to another. Before doing so, however, the shown
normally closed (NC) fill valve is opened to fill the standby cooler with oil
prior to transfer.

3.2.2 Lube Oil Coolers Flow
As shown in the photographs, hot oil enters the heat
exchanger from the discharge of the AC oil pumps in
the upper left corner of the South end of the heat
exchanger and the warmed cooling water exits from
the upper right hand corner. Cooling water enters the
South end of the heat exchanger at the bottom right
corner and the cooled oil exits from the bottom left as
shown. Temperature of the oil leaving the coolers is
controlled by the oil temperature control valve (VA32-1)
that regulates water flow exiting the cooler.

3.2.3 Lube Oil Cooler Construction
Cooling water is directed through one cooler at a time by aligning butterfly
valves located in the cooling water lines like the one shown in here. The heat
exchangers are of the counter flow type meaning the oil and cooling medium
travel through the exchanger in opposite directions to one another as
depicted in the cutaway drawing.
The purpose of the counter flow type exchanger is to
keep from shocking the elements of the heat exchanger
(in this case plates) with cold water against warm oil.
As depicted, the cold water enters the heat
exchanger in the vicinity of the cooled oil outlet
and the warmed water exits the heat
exchanger in the vicinity of the warm oil inlet.
Cold to cold and hot to hot.

3.3 Lube Oil Filters
3.3.1 LF3-1
Upon leaving the lube oil cooler, the oil is directed
through the appropriate piping to the lube oil
filter(s). Each lube oil cooler is coupled with a
specific lube oil filter, one such combination is
seen here. The oil cooler LOHX-1 is connected
to the lube oil filter LF3-1. The other oil cooler /
filter combination is connected at the discharge
of the shown ball-check valves. Therefore,
changing from one filter to the other for cleaning
(changing filter elements) also changes the
cooler in use.
Controls on the shown lube oil filter consist of a
pressure differential gauge (QQ-21) and pressure
switch (63QQ-21) that monitor the differential
across filter LF3-1. The pressure switch alarms at
15 psid (1 psid) pressure differential to indicate
the need to switch filters and change out
the filter elements in the dirty filter housing.
The alarm clears at 11 psid (1 psid) decreasing
pressure differential.

3.4 Hydraulic and Trip Oil Supply
Turbine lube oil, downstream from the operating cooler / filter combination, provides suction oil to the turbine
hydraulic system. This connection is shown here via the OR-1 header. The hydraulic system is a subject in its
own and is covered in the Turbine Hydraulic System Power-Doc.
Further downstream, past a 4-in. orifice there is a 2nd connection, OLT-1, to the turbine trip oil. This system is
also a subject in its own and is covered in the Turbine Trip Oil Power-Doc.

3.5 Bearing Oil Pressure

3.5.1 Regulation
Lube oil from the cooler / filter combination
is supplied to a header labeled as OL.
Oil flow is then through an orifice flange to
the Lube Oil Pressure Regulator (VPR2-1).
Lube oil pressure is regulated by the Fisher
diaphragm type pressure regulator. The
valve is operated by fluid pressure, taken
from a point downstream of the valve by
way of a sensing line, and throttles oil
flow to maintain pressure in the bearing
header labeled OR. Should the regulator
fail closed, the Oil Supply Orifice (FO-3)
will maintain a minimum flow. VPR2-1
is calibrated for a bearing header
pressure of 30 psig ( 5 psig).

3.5.3 Bearing Oil Piping
The bearing supply header piping distributes cooled lube oil to the various components served by the Lube Oil System. Oil to the turbine
is directed through the return header piping. This arrangement minimizes oil leakage (and thus the fire hazard), which could develop
in the event of a supply header rupture. The return header gravity drains back to the oil tank/reservoir. Oil to the generator bearings
and hydrogen seals does not pass through oil guard piping.

3.5.6 Generator #1 Bearing & Turning Gear
The bearing header, OR, provides lubricating oil to the generator bearings, seen here is Generator Bearing #1. The drain from the #1
Generator Bearing passes through a flow gauge (FG) to the Bearing Drain Enlargement. Thermocouples, LT-G1D-A and LT-G1D-B,
provide feedback as to the Lube System Temp Generator #1 Bearing Drain. The B thermocouple is a spare.
Return oil from the Generator H

3.5.7 Generator #2 Bearing
The bearing header, OR, provides lubricating oil to the
generator bearings. The #2 Generator Bearing is the journal
bearing furthest from the pressure regulating valve. For this
reason, significant pressure sensing devices are located at
this feed line. There are two pressure switches (63QT-2A
and 63QT-2B) as well as two pressure indicators (QT-2A and
QT-2B) in this feed line, monitoring bearing oil pressure at
the point furthest from the supply. The pressure switch
contacts close on a decreasing pressure at 8 psig (1 psig)
and re-open at 10 psig (1 psig) increasing.
These two pressure switches function in 2-out-of-3
logic with an alarm pressure switch (not shown) to trip
the turbine.
The drain from the #2 Generator Bearing passes
through a flow gauge (FG) to the Bearing Drain
Enlargement. Thermocouples, LT-G2D-A and LT-G2D-B,
provide feedback as to the Lube System Temp

4.0 Emergency Pumps
4.1 DC Emergency Bearing Oil Pump
There is one (1) DC Emergency Bearing Oil Pump labeled as PQ2-1
that is powered by one DC Motor labeled 88QE-1. The purpose is
to supply oil to the lube oil supply header in the case of a unit trip
due to a loss of AC power. During a unit startup the DC oil pump
will start as a test to ensure its functionality.
The DC pump discharge bypasses the unit heat exchangers and
filters (in case this system is the reason oil pressure has been lost).
Under these emergency circumstances the DC Emergency Bearing
Oil Pump is used only to supply oil to the unit bearings during a
trip coast down. Pressure switch 63QE-1 indicates
the pump in service. A pressure indicator, QE-1,
provides feedback as well.

4.2 DC Oil Pump Controls
The Emergency DC Oil Pump is controlled by the turbine control system and will start automatically if there is a unit trip due to loss of
lube oil pressure (63QT). The Emergency DC Oil Pump will continue to run while coasting down.
The DC oil pump will also auto start with a signal from 63ST-1A or 63ST-1B on a Low Seal Oil Pressure Trip set at 3.5 psid ( 0.2 psid)
(see Power-Doc on Seal Oil).
Pressure switch 63QE-1 gives indication that the Emergency DC oil pump is running or stopped and will display the status of the pump as
Running or Stopped on the turbine controls screen.
After the unit comes to a stop
on a turbine trip due to loss of AC
power, the DC pump should only
operate a few minutes per hour, in
order to remove heat, while at the
same time conserving battery life.
The DC pump should be run
continuously if the bearing metal
temperatures are above 250F.
The emergency pump is sized to
clear the trip pressure switches

Combustion Turbine Lube Oil System
4.3 Auxiliary Seal Oil Pump
Generator seal oil pressure is normally provided from the AC Lube Oil Pumps, coolers, and filter
assemblies. The oil supply is from OL-11 through the ball-check valve, to OS (the seal oil supply).
The unit is equipped with an auxiliary seal oil pump for use when neither of the AC lube oil pumps
is available for service such as the case might be during an AC lube oil pump equipment outage with
the gas turbine off line.
The seal oil pump can be powered by either
its AC or DC motor that are arranged in a piggy
back fashion. The AC motor (88QS-1) is used
when AC power is available and the gas
turbine is not running. The DC motor (88ES-1)
is used when AC power is NOT available and is
for Emergency situations only.
When the seal oil pump is running its
discharge bypasses the systems heat
exchanger and oil filters. For this reason the
Seal Oil Pump is only run when necessary,
meaning that the AC lube oil pumps are not
available for some reason.
Pressure indicator OS-1 provides local
indication that the pump is in service.

4.4 Auxiliary Seal Oil Pump Controls
The AC auxiliary seal oil pump motor will auto start on a signal from Pressure Differential Trip Switch 63ST-1A or 63ST-1B on a
decreasing pressure differential of 3.5 psid ( 0.2 psid). These controls originate in the generator seal oil.
The DC auxiliary seal oil pump motor will auto start from the same switches, providing the AC oil pump does not start (due to loss
of AC power). The seal oil system is also equipped with a low differential pressure Alarm switch, 63SA-1.
The AC and DC auxiliary seal
oil pump motors have NO way of
being started from the unit turbine
controls display screen. The screen
gives indication if the motors are
Running or Stopped only. As shown
on the turbine controls screen both
the AC and DC auxiliary seal oil
pump motors are Stopped.

5.2 Startup
Both AC Oil Pumps are in operation when the turbine is running below rated speed, such as during startups and shutdowns to supply
oil to the system. Once the turbine reaches 95 percent of rated speed, the lag pump will shut down and the lead pump will carry the
systems oil supply needs.
One vapor extractor is also in service during this time to remove any hydrogen gas and oil mist that might be in the oil tank in the air
space between the oil level and the top of the tank. Additionally, one lube oil cooler and its associated oil filter are in service.
On a unit startup signal from the turbine controls, the Emergency DC lube oil pump and
Emergency DC seal oil pump motors will be automatically started to confirm availability,
if needed.
Prior to startup the control room
operator selects the lead and lag
pumps, vapor extractors and
lines up the desired remaining
equipment.
The need for immersion heaters
depends upon the local conditions.

5.3 Normal Operation
During normal operations the running unit is monitored from the turbine controls screen by the on-shift control operator. The lead-pump
remains the lead equipment until the system pressure control switches AUTO start the lag equipment or, the control operator makes
a manual change in the lead, lag configuration using the appropriate turbine controls screen. This change in lead, lag configuration is
typically accomplished during the weekly auto-start test of the lag-pump. Once the lag-pump has successfully started and been verified,
then what was the lead-pump is shut down, placed in auto, and becomes the lag-pump.
The need for immersion heaters depends upon the local conditions.

5.4 System Shutdown
During shutdown the need for lubrication oil can vary, to include complete isolation of all motor driven pumps and draining the oil tank.
During a shutdown, where the unit is available for service, one lube oil pump would remain in operation at all times. Given unit standby
operations the vapor extractor and mist eliminator would be in service as well.
The need for immersion heaters depends upon the local conditions.
