Research and Planning
STUDENT NAME: MARK: REASONS ACTUAL MARK:
Joel 14/20
Some tasks were detailed
however needed
connections to his film
opening and needed more
research into chosen genre.
15/20
Luke 18/20
Huge amounts of detail, e.g:
theory and chosen genre.
More detail into conventions
is needed
19/20
Louise 13/20
Had a set plan on what she
wanted to do. Needed more
detail on many tasks.
12/20
James 19/20
Amazing amounts of
detail in research and
planning. High quality work
consistent throughout entire
blog.

MARK: REASONS: ACTUAL
MARK:
45/60 Jump shots,
shots were
shaky, light &
shadow
changed as

clever use of
low-level lighting
however the film
was too dark
and lost huge
amount of
detail/quality in
picture.

MARK: REASONS: ACTUAL
MARK:
47/60 Good variation
of shot types,
appropriate
music,
interesting
storyline.
Lighting could
be slightly lower
to link to other
gangster films.
Voiceover could
be more
gangster like
and appropriate.
Shot cuts kept
opening well
paced.

MARK: REASONS: ACTUAL
MARK:
34/60 Clever use of
titles in the
tunnel. Music is
too loud and
overpowers the
video. The
camera
movements are
not very smooth.
Props are
appropriate for
chosen sub-
genre. Locations
could be better
fitted to the
genre.

Construction - James
MARK: REASONS: ACTUAL
MARK:
47/60 Nice voiceover,
good choice of
locations. Varied
shot types. Time
lapse at the
beginning was
very creative.
The fight scene
at the end wasn
t well framed
and there was
no still shots.

Conclusion
From analysing previous students work using the marking criteria, I can see a clear difference
between a high level video and low level video, and I have gained an insight into what elements I need
to consider to gain a high grade.
For example many students have faults in their lighting, therefore I want to create a film opening with
lighting which is appropriate for my sub-genre.
Also from seeing previous students work I know that the sound I use has to be very precise, for
example I dont want it to be too loud, or seem out of place. To stop this happening I will choose
appropriate music, use a microphone, and be careful when editing in my diegetic and non-diegetic
sounds.
I plan to make my shots as smooth as possible to avoid jump shots, like in Joels video. However this
may be difficult due to the lack of equipment I have.
Some students film openings I really enjoyed was Lukes and Jamess. I enjoyed these as they both fit
their chosen sub-genre well and included, excellent Mise en Scene, a variety of shots, and an
interesting storyline which caught my attention from beginning to end.
