Metacognative Strategies: Lesson 2

SWBAT identify the metacognitive thought process they employ while reading a complex text
and engaging in a think aloud.
Drill: Think about the most difficult book or text you can remember reading. What made it
difficult to read? What strategies did you have to get through the problem areas? (2 mins)
Ask for students to share drill. Briefly discuss challenges attached to reading complex text.
Explain what a think aloud is.( 3 mins)
Ask for a student to share their AR book with me for a moment. Model a think aloud for
students while displaying the following questions on the board.
What do you think is going to happen next?
What do you see or picture?
What are your questions?
What does that remind you of?
What do you think the text is saying?
What do you do when you run into a problem? (3 minutes)
Ask who has questions while handing out copies of two different short texts(2 different
colors).(0-2 minutes)
Tell students to partner up at their tables with someone who has a different colored sheet of
paper than them. Students are to take turns conducting think alouds with their partner, the one
who is not reading should be recording their partners thoughts. Each partner will have three
minutes.(1 minute)
First partner (3 minutes)
Second partner(3 minutes)
Partners briefly discuss activity and choose one or two comments from combined notes to share with
the class.(2 minutes)
Classwide think aloud on Maybe Dats Your Pwobwem too (8 minutes)
Exit ticket: Look at the metacognitive bookmark. What strategies on there are useful? Which are not?
What would you add? Edit the bookmark to make it most helpful for you (3 minutes)
