Topic: To Kill a Mockingbird
Objective: Students will perform skits of conflicts from book one of To Kill A Mockingbird in
order to analyze and depict the development of Scout and Jem over the first half of the story.
Standard:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.3: Analyze how complex characters (e.g., those with multiple
or conflicting motivations) develop over the course of a text, interact with other characters, and
advance the plot or develop the theme.
Assessment:
Students will perform skits of conflicts that occurred throughout the story, but show how they
believe Scout or Jem would have resolved that conflict had it occurred later in the story, showing
their understanding of the characters development.
Activities:

Drill: Journal entry Think about a conflict in your own lives. What caused it? How did
you resolve it? Did you learn from it?
Group work: writing short skit.
Group work: performing short skit.
Exit ticket: Sticky notes: predict how Jem and Scout will continue to change over the
next half of the story.
