Practitioner
Introduction of Career
Nurse practitioners (NPs) are advanced
practice registered nurses who provide care to
patients throughout the lifespan, from
premature newborns to the elderly.
They perform comprehensive and focused
physical examinations, diagnose and treat
common acute illnesses and injuries, provide
immunizations, order and interpret diagnostic
tests such as X-rays and EKGs, as well as
laboratory tests, and prescribe medications and
therapies.
NPs can prescribe medications, including
controlled substances, in all 50 states. In 26
states, NPs have authority to practice
independently.
NPs work in clinics, office practices, managed care
organizations and hospitals.
Nurse Practitioners deliver care in rural areas, urban
community health centers, college campuses, worksite
employee health centers and other locations.
NPs also work for healthcare technology companies (e.g.,
pharmaceutical manufacturers), perform health care research,
teach in schools and universities, and serve in governmental
agencies (e.g., health departments, the military, etc.).
Nurse Practitioners Settings
High school studies required for Nurse Practitioner is
Biology, Chemistry, Pre-Cal, Anatomy and Physiology, and
Sports Medicine 1, 2, and 3.
The skills you need for NPs are reading comprehension,
monitoring, time management, active learning, mathematics,
and coordination.
The interests you need to have for NPs are helping, caring,
hospitals, sick people, etc.

Required
Nurse practitioners (NPs) are registered
nurses with graduate education in nursing.
Most NPs have a masters degree, which
requires at least two years of full-time study
beyond the bachelors degree in nursing.
It takes about 7 years to earned your BSN

Albany State University
The BSN Program is approved by the
Georgia Board of Nursing.
Completion of approximately 30 hours
of the core curriculum with a minimum
grade of C in each course and in
institutional requirements. You need a
2.75 cumulative GPA.
Generic nursing students considered for
admission must have Anatomy and
Physiology course(s) that are less than 6
years old at the time of potential
admission into the nursing program.
Completion of Standardized Nursing
admissions diagnostics test with reading
and math scores at the percentile
approved by the Nursing Faculty. This
exam is scheduled during the spring
semester.
LSU
Admission to the baccalaureate program
of study is by competitive application.
An applicant must complete 34 hours of
required pre-nursing courses.
Of the 34 required prerequisites, the
following 16 hours of prerequisites must
be completed prior to application and
appear on the applicants transcript.
The GPA calculated on these courses
must be at least 2.8 on a 4.0 scale in
order to be eligible for admission:
College algebra (3 hours)
English composition I (3 hours)
General biology and lab (4 hours)
General chemistry (3 hours)
General psychology (3 hours)

As the numbers of primary care physicians decrease and the demand for
health care services increases, nurse practitioners (NPs) are highly
recruited.
According to Dahring, for every new NP and PA graduate, there will be
six vacancies on the job market - a statistic that is both positive for job
seekers and startling for an expanding patient population.
Nurse Practitioners make $96,460 per year. NPs make $46.37 per hour.
Employment of nurse anesthetists, nurse midwives, and nurse
practitioners is expected to grow 31 percent from 2012 to 2022, much
faster than the average for all occupations. Nurse Practitioners will
increase by 34%.
