Although analoguetechnology still offerssomegreat benefits: low total cost of ownership, customizablecoverageand
featureslike simple/reliableimplementation, it hasreached itspeak. Among itschief limitationsarebattery life, voicequality,
low productivity in communication and integrated dataapplications. In addition, analogueradio usersarefacing spectrum
limitationsresulting from frequency crowd and interference.
LMRsystemshaveused 25 kHz-widechannels. Thecurrent spectrum efficiency can not meet therequirement. In December
2004, theFederal CommunicationsCommission mandated that all privateLMRusersoperating below 512 MHzmoveto 12.5
kHznarrowband voicechannelsand highly efficient datachannel operationsby January 1, 2013. If you areoperating a
wideband (25 kHz) system in theVHFor UHFland mobileband, you may continueto do so until thedeadlineof January 1,
2013. Asapractical matter, however, you may want to start planning and preparing for your narrowband conversion now. In
addition, beginning on January 1, 2011, licenseeswill bepermitted to apply for new systemsor to expand their existing
systemsonly if they will beutilizing 12.5 kHzbandwidth (or less) equipment or equipment that satisfiestheefficiency standard.
Therefore, you will need to takethisdeadlineinto consideration if you areplanning to implement anew system or to make
modificationsto your existing system.
On Dec. 16, 2009, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of thePeople'sRepublic of China(MIIT) announced that
25kHzradio modewill not beapproved after Jan. 1, 2010, analogueradio will not beapproved after 2011, and all radioshave
to bemigrated into digital by 2016.
The limitations of analogue technology
TheDMRAssociation wasfirst set up in 2005 astheDMR-MoUAssociation by agroup of leading public mobileradio
manufacturersto support ETSI during theDMRstandardization process. TheDMRAssociation isopen to any
organization or individual interested in using or building DMRproductsor in supporting theDMRstandard in other
ways. TheAssociation maintainslinkswith regulators, tradebodiesand standardsorganizationsaround theworld.
DMR Standard Introduction
About The DMR Association
About DMR
Although DMR, TETRA, P25, and MPT-1327 areall based on open standards, they arealso based on different
protocolsand targeted at different markets(e.g., TETRAand P25 arelargely used by public safety organisations) and
arenot technically compatible. Another standard created by ETSI, dPMR, isconsidered acompetitor to DMRin the
businessmarket, but asof today, productsbuilt to thestandard aretargeted at thelow power, unlicensed part of
thespecification, best suited for personal use, recreation, small retail and other settingsthat do not requirewide
areacoverageor advanced features. Moving forward, wehopeto seemoreand moresystemswork in conjunction
with DMR, whereit makesmarket/business.
Thecoverageareaof aTETRAbasestation isapproximately between half and onethird compared to that of an
analog or DMRradio system, thereforeTETRAneedsalot of moresites. Amedium sizeTETRAsystem may costs3 to
5 timesmorethan aDMRone. Thefeaturesof thesesystemsarenear thesame(digital encryption, positioning,
messaging ...) and theyounger DMRisdeveloping rapidly theapplications.
TETRAisatrunking system targeted to point to point communicationsin multi cell and high traffic density
environments. Likeatelephonenetwork, hundredsof usersin alittlearearequirealot of radio cellsto deliver the
communications. DMRisadedicated channel or trunking system targeted to providerobust coveragerather than
capacity.
The difference between DMR and other standards
Digital MobileRadio (DMR*) isadigital radio standard specified for professional mobileradio (PMR) users
developed by theEuropean TelecommunicationsStandardsInstitute(ESTI), and first ratified in 2005. TheDMR
protocol coversunlicensed (Tier I), licensed conventional (Tier II) and licensed trunked (Tier III) modesof operation,
although in practicecommercial application istoday focussed on theTier II and III licensed categories.
Thestandard isdesigned to operatewithin theexisting 12.5kHzchannel spacing used in licenced land mobile
frequency bandsglobally and to meet futureregulatory requirementsfor 6.25kHzchannel equivalence. The
primary goal isto specify affordabledigital systemswith low complexity. DMRprovidesvoice, dataand other
supplementary services. Today, productsdesigned to itsspecificationsaresold in all regionsof theworld.

Advantages

Digital Voice, Superior Anti-interference and Voice Quality
The digital voice compression technology of DMR terminal provides better noise rejection and
preserves voice quality over a greater range than analogue, especially at coverage edges, thanks to
theapplication of narrowband encoder/decoder and digital correction technology.
The digital process could filter noise and rebuild signal from damaged transmission, so that users
can get better communication quality and wider coverage.

Productsand Solutions
When theincreasingly demand of professional communicationshitsthebottleneck of analog trunking
technologies, professional usersdon't havetoo many options. HyteraDMRTrunking System, compliant to
DMRTier III of ETSI, bringswith solutionsof both advanced technologiesand high customer value.
As acompletetrunking system of voiceand datacapacities, HyteraDMRTrunking isdeveloped to
promotecommunication efficiency of public safety and other industry users, and to facilitatetheanalog-
to-digital migration, which isgoing on acrosstheworld, in asmoothly way. HyteraDMRtrunking products
and solutionsarewidely applicablefor public security, military, oil &gas, , port &airport, rail transport,
emergency responsedepartment, and other professional users.
Another advantageof theDMRTDMAapproach isthat you get two channelswith one
repeater, oneantenna, and asimpleduplexer. Compared to FDMAsolutions, two-slot
TDMAallowsyou to achieve6.25 kHzefficiency whileminimizing investmentson
repeatersand combiner. FDMArequiresarepeater for each channel, plusadditional
combiner and frequencies, and there'sanotablelossin signal quality and coveragewhen
combiner isused in thisway.
DMRgetstwo stablechannelswith only onerepeater, and doesnot requireadditional
repeater or combiner, thereby investment of usersoninfrastructurewill begreatly
reduced, and thenetworking solutionscan also besimplified.
DMRtwo-slot TDMAtechnology reserves12.5kHzbandwidth, and dividesit into 2
alternatetimeslots, thereforeone12.5kHzchannel could support 2 synchronized or
individual calls. Each slot could operateasan individual communication channel and has
equivalent bandwidth (6.25 kHz), whilethis12.5 kHzisstill ableto interconnect with other
analogue12.5 kHzchannels.
DMRisfully compatiblewith already authorized PMRfrequencies, so that userscan get
twicethechannel spacewithout re-configuration or buying additional frequencies.
Whilethefirst time-slot isworking, thesecond time-slot can, in aTDMAsystem, beused
for datatransmission such astext messaging or location datain parallel with voicecall,
which isvery useful in dispatch systemsthat provideboth voiceand visual transmission.
Theenhanced datacapability isbecoming moreand moreimportant to facilitatelarge
amount of datatransmission. Futuredevelopmentsof thetwo-slot TDMAapplication
includetemporarily integrating two timeslotsto doubledatatransmission speed, and
using two timeslotsat thesametimein order to enablefull-duplex call.

Large Coverage, Low Networking Cost
DMRusesnonlinear amplifier and largecoveragetechnologies, which hastechnical
advantagesasbelow:
Theradiusratio of basestation coverageused by largecoverageto small coverageis3:1;
High spectrum efficiency, high amplifier efficiency and improved battery power saving;
City-areacoveragecould beachieved with fewer basestations;
Lessbasestationsmakethenetwork much simple, thusgreatly improvenetwork reliability
and security.
Networking with lessbasestationscould savealot of investment for customersin basic
facilities, and notably reducethecost and facilitateboth operation and maintenance.

Battery lifehasalwaysbeen agreat challengefor mobiledevices, and thetalk timefor asinglebattery
chargeislimited.
Two-slot TDMA, however, offersagood solution. Sincean individual call usesonly oneof thetwo timeslots,
it requiresonly half of thetransmitter'scapacity. Thetwo timeslotsarein use alternatively, so that the
transmitter isidlehalf of thetime. For example, in atypical duty cycleof 5 percent transmitting, 5 percent
receiving, and 90 percent standby, thetransmit timeaccountsfor ahigh proportion of thedrain on the
battery. By cutting theeffectivetransmit timein half, two-slot TDMAcan enableup to 40 percent
improvement in talk timein comparison with analogueradios. Becauseof thetotal power consuming of
every call hasbeen reduced, working timeof thebattery would beextended and charging timeinterval
becomelonger. Modern digital equipment also hassleep and power management technologies, which
could also extend thebattery life.
Enhanced Communication Confidentiality
Voicesignal iseasy to bemonitored on analoguechannel. However, thesignal could not bemonitored
when DMRdigital technology isapplied, unlesssignaling or ID( 16,776,415 in total) ismatched, thusthe
confidentiality of your communication isensured.

DMRsystem usesconstant envelopemodulation similar to MPTsystem, and both theterminal and system usenonlinear power amplifier, which makesit
easier for important and DMRsystem and terminal to adopt amultimodedesign. DMRstandard hasinherited technical featuresof MPT, and makessmooth
migration possiblefrom analogueMPTsystems.
DMRiscompatiblewith both analogueand digital system. Analogueand digital userscould operateand beinteroperablewith each other in onenetwork.
DMRmobileterminalshavethesamecoding rule, operation method and user habit with analog ones. Common application will not beimpacted during
thetransition from analogueto digital. Thesmooth transition includesthreeparts: spectrum, system and conventional terminal.
SmoothTransitionof Spectrum
Comparing with analogueMPTsystem, thespectrum efficiency of
DMRdigital trunking system isenhanced 4 times, which isabig help
to relievethestressof increasing shortagein spectrum resource.
Meanwhile, customersdo not haveto reapply for spectrum resource
asthefrequency assignment isfully compatiblewith analogue25kHz
bandwidth and digital 12.5kHzbandwidth, and channelsof analogue
and digital could beused simultaneously during thetransition
without any interference.without any interference.
SmoothTransitionof System
DMRtrunking system can takeacompatibledesign of both digital and
analogue, and support two working modesasMPTand DMR; it also
facilitatesseamlesstransition from analogueto digital and MPTto
DMRtrunking asfollows:
DMRcontroller and IProuter areadded into theexisting analogue
MPTsystem;
Someof theanaloguetransceiversarereplaced by digital ones;
Replacesomeof theanalogueterminal with digital ones;
Gradually replacetheanaloguetransceiverswith digital transceivers;
Achievedigitized communication in thewholesystem.
SmoothTransitionof Terminal
DMRterminal could support four modes: DMRconventional, DMR
trunking, analogueconventional, and analogueMPTtrunking. DMR
repeater iscompatiblewith both analogueand digital, and its
intelligent switch function recognizesanalogueand digital signal, and
accomplish receiving and transmission, thereby realizeseamless
smooth transition from analogueto digital on conventional
equipment.
In addition to basic voiceservicessuch asindividual call and group call, and basic dataservicessuch as
SMSand statusinformation, DMRhasabundant dispatch functionswhich could meet dispatching
requirementsof public security, public utility, and many other industries, and set rulesfor various
dispatching services:
Featured by full digitization and IPsoft-switch, DMRequipment obtainsexcellent scalability. DMR
providesnot only digital talkback function from end to end, but also dataservicesincluding positioning,
text message, telemetry, datatransmission, radio controlling, etc. Furthermore, it providesrich
secondary development interfacesfor customersby proper plan and design of system softwareand
hardwareinfrastructure. Userscould tailor thesystem according to specific needs, and exploremore
application servicesby secondary development.
With increasing demand on dataand voicecommunication, theabovefunctionsand featureswould
greatly enrich dataapplicationsof thesystem; thereforeachievehigher return on investment (ROI).
