A NEW NETBOOK FOR SHADOWRUN!


This time, BulletShower, another runner on the turf, has laid his
greedy hands on another netbook originally published for
Cyperpunk 2020. In original, there were three of them: first and
second, and the Finnish edition. Matush Manhunt have compiled
them into one big volume.
It brings you the conversions for all three Information Overload books -
more soon to follow! Now wipe that ugly smile off your face, chummer. ;)
As always, feel free to change what you don´t like ...
I´ve also deleted entrances that have already been covered somewhere
else, most possibly in one of the Plastic Warriors publications.

Something about the author


Norbert G. Matausch has been into roleplaying since 1984. Born in Germany, he started
playing Midgard and Realms of Arkadia, the English translation of a fantasy rpg called
„Das Schwarze Auge“. His roleplaying party hasn´t changed very much since the
beginning. Also, we are proud to tell you we were among the first German players to
own the first edition of Shadowrun 1, hardcover, and, of course, play it ;)
In 1991, he sold the copyrights of his own roleplaying system „Plüsch,
Power&Plunder“, which was the first comic roleplaying book dealing with living teddy
bears, and which was rated 3rd best roleplaying game in 1992, though it was still a
„fannish“ product. :)
He´s into diceless roleplaying for several years now.

MILITECH CYBERNETICS DETECTION COMPUTER (MCDC) 2-

This is a new neuralware computer originally designed by Militech for use
by the Green Berets and other American Special Forces Units. The computer
recieves data from up to four different non-visual cybernetic sensory
devices, such as cyberaudio units or Doc Richter Seismic Detectors (Solo of
Fortune 1). The computer processes the data recieved and calculates the
exact location of where the noise or vibrations are coming from. It then
signals the user via cyberaudio with a tone, in what direction the the

signals are coming from. (Sound is a better indicator of exact direction
than sight is). A voice then gives exact range. The computer can also be
linked to cybernetic sonar, or radar implants. If someone has interface

plugs, they can link themselves to non-cybernetic detection equipment as


well. This enables the user to hide completely out of sight, and remain
completely motionless and still detect someone nearby. Great for ambushes,
which is why it was designed.

SLEEPER PROCESSOR
LEGAL
This neuralware add-on allows you to sleep, wherever you are! It works on
the same principles of a sleep inducer (CB1, first section), but the
sleeper has an integral function that calulates the rest you need and makes
sure you sleep only that much. Never oversleep again! And, the special
calculator will also stimulate adrenal release to keep you from falling
asleep again!

(NOTE: for an extra 100¥, the sleeper can be tied into a pain editor so one cannot be
awakened even by jostling when asleep.)

Mental co-processors are a new technology where a biochip is planted in the
brain and assists it with certain functions - like math, for example. But,
unlike chipped skills, a person with a mental co-processor can still learn
and increase their skill. However, some co-processors actually alter your

Don't feel like having your skull cracked open to get cyberaudio crammed in
there? Expertly designed nanosurgeons can rebuild sections of your auditory
canal to improve your hearing.

Game notes: Gives the user enhanced hearing range and level damper as if he had the
two cyberaudio options. The process takes 4 days and the character is deaf for 3D10
hours after the injection (deafness begins in 1D6 hours from the time of injection).

Get the power of the bat! Low-lite still requires light! A thermograph is
good for only heat! Now, use sound emissions to see! Requires Kiroshi Video
Imagers, a CyberVocal system with the SubSonic option, and cyberaudio with
Enhanced Hearing Range, and you will be able to see in pitch-blackness,
regardless of the heat emissions. Game notes: This allows the individual's
three aforementioned systems to interface and create a visual image from
the returned sonic data. The system works at near-real-time, but not
perfectly, thus the character is at +1 Target Number for Perception based tests while
using this item for visual data. A TriTech White Noise Generator will foil this system. It
is neuralware.

EYES

EMERALDTECH XR RAY VISION 2- CA


The latest option in cyberoptics, developed for our IRA medics in the
field. Worried that your patient might have a broken bone? Just flip on
your Xr Ray vision and look for yourself. Xr Rays are actually r-neutrinos,
a small particle that passes through all organic materials. This has the
same effect of X-Ray technology but without the need of a transmitter or
any of the harmful radiation effects. Xr ray vision allows the user to
penetrate layers of any organic material, discerning what is inside to a
limited effect. Unfortunately the receptors for this are so complicated,
that only a small number of them can be fit into the cyberoptic. This gives
the Xr Ray vision a range of only 1m (3 feet). So while you can look under

someone's jacket if they're standing right next to you (and only if they
are wearing non-metallic laced armor), looking through walls is pretty much
out of the question. This does give medics an advantage when diagnosing or

RAVEN MICROCYB CYBERSENSOR 2-

A variation of the Cybersnake, the Cybersensor is a cyberoptic mounted on a
long retractable appendage. Often used to replace a lost eye or implanted
in the arms or throat, the Cybersensor is often used by police or black ops
teams to see around corners or up through windows. Maximum range of
extension is about two feet. The Cybereye can have 3 options implanted due
to the slightly smaller size of the eye itself and the nature of the
Cybersensor system..

With this cybereye option, tiny devices in the cybereye project random,
subliminal message-inducing patterns onto the retina of another person

ODIN'S EYE 2-

It is said that the Norse god Odin gave one of his eyes in the search of
knowledge. You don't have to do that to get the drop on your opponents and
rivals. OE is a cyberoptic option that enables you to emulate any kind of
cybereye without additional wiring. It does this by pulling electroneural
signals from SOMEONE ELSE'S CYBEROPTIC! Just activate OE, and you can see
what the target sees through his eye. Video images, Times Square, DUD
readouts, thermal, etc. OE will compensate if the scanned target has two
cybereyes by putting the image in letterbox format. OE has a digital

download function, in case anything you see could be important later.


(NOTE: takes all options on a cybereye. Odin's Eye has a 15 meter range.
Any cybereye in that range can be "read", and the same image will appear in
the user's cybereye. OE can also be used to detect for the presence of
cyberoptics.)

It's been many a time when a street sam or cop has been outdone by an
invisible sniper. Our human ears, even augmented, aren't designed to pick out the
precise locations of gunshots. Now, with Lockdown, you can spot a sniper or
gunman anywhere! Using the user's internal computer in coordination with
Times Square Plus and advanced audio, Lockdown applies a graphic "picture"
of the bullet's trajectory over the user's vision, and places a red
rectangle in the general location of the firer. The more shots fired, the
better Lockdown can get a pinpoint on the location!

Game notes: Lockdown is neuralware and requires TimesSquare Plus, a bodycomp (see
Chromebook 2), and cyberaudio with Enhanced Hearing Range. Each two shots
decrease the user's TN for finding a hidden target (by Awareness/Notice) by 1, and
will use the targeting scope to negate all penalties for firing blindly after ten shots.

Need to pick objects out of a crowd? The newest cyberoptic option from
Kiroshi can help! Program your specifications onto a blank chip, drop it in
your socket, and the SR-processor will interface with the chip, and then
proceed to pick out the things specified by the chip, surrounding them with
a colored halo (user chooses the color when programming the chip - ain´t that
comfortable).

Game notes: The system can access up to three different chips at once.
Programming cannot be incredibly general ("halo all firearms"), but can be
semi-specific ("halo all handguns") to extremely specific ("halo all
Malorian Arms 3516 Pistols").

• Mimic. This device when linked to CyberAudio, allows the individual to copy other
voices that he has heard almost perfectly. The character can only slightly alter
what he has heard, otherwise repeating verbatim what he has heard. Useful for an
assassin luring unsuspecting characters as if he were a friend. This is not the same
as the Voice Pattern option. The user of this option can only repeat what he has
heard, he cannot extrapolate new words without having heard those words. This

completely unidentifiable, but also making it sound so electronic that it cannot
pass as a voice. It does keep Vocal Pattern Tracers from catching you though!
• Armor, 300¥. This is only possible with NewThroat, as it involves armoring the entire
throat, giving it an armor rating of 5/3. This is useful when dealing with
cutthroats!
• SubSonic, 300 ¥. This device gives the individual the ability to speak in the subsonic
and supersonic levels, allowing the individual to call dogs as if with a dog whistle. It
can be used to send signals to others, on otherwise impossible frequencies.

Yet another version of the ever-popular hand-implanted cyberweapons,
StreetTech presents the Pop-Up Handblades. Less obvious than wolvers and
not as fragile as classic rippers, Pop-Ups show only as two or three metal
or polymer tracks along the back of your hand until activated. Once
triggered, they spring up and out with enough force to sever bone and lock
into place. Since the upper edge of the blade need only glide vertically
within its housing channel, these blades can be monofilament enhanced for
more cutting power. Pop-Ups cut upon impact be it a backhand slap, punch,
triggering the blades against someone's arm, etc.
Pop-Up Handblades resemble classic sundial pointers, having a long upper
edge that stands at a 45-dregee angle to the back of the hand and a curved
edge above the knuckles. Each blade is a solid piece, the curve meeting the
upper edge in a vicious point, the long blade slanting back into the hand
near the wrist. Popular in pairs and threes, these blades conceal easily
beneath gloves or even long sleeves. Pop-Up Handblades are considered black
market cyberware and StreetTech never heard of them, or you. Got it?

Power Armors don´t cut down the agility of the wearer. Of course, it has to be said that
Power Armors are not the stealthiest. Their heavy weight make it almost impossible to
overhear them. The designers have reacted to the complaints of several military and
corp generals and brought them several options for PA, (which however can´t be fitted
into existing PA, sorry guys):
• Stealthing: dampens the PA´s noisy operating sounds and the CLANK! when it walks
or runs (50,000¥)
• Slow Boost: based on the assumption that the PA has according operating tools, it´s
possible to perform very precise „manual“ actions (thus ignoring the normal +4 to
all TN when it comes to dexterity tasks) (70,000¥)

I know what you're thinking, "Hey, don't they already have an EMP Shield
option for PA?". Well yes, but this isn't that kind of shield. This
weapon/defensive accessory comes from the medieval days. That's right, a PA
sized shield, but more than that this shield has a micro-laser pre-impact
sensor linked to a focused "flatfire" EMP generator that will not only
scramble any electronics that get a little too close, it also creates an
ionized defense field that will rip apart most simple projectiles. As a
bonus, it can be used offensively by smashing it into an opponent. The
defense field is also backed by a durable cera-metal composite armor disc,
to protect the delicate instruments. An expensive, but effective tool. This
device requires a lot of power to function; it takes 8 hours of normal PA
operating power to run the EMP generator for 1 hour.

Game notes: EMP Generator does 15D, plus creates Point Blank pulse
rifle effects. Sealed armor only protects half as effective, sealed and grounded armor
protects with fully. Normal armor is useless. Half the damage is lethal, the other half is
stun. The protection of the EMP works on a 1-4 on a d6. The EMP field rolls 8 dice
versus the weapon´s power. If the EMP rolls more successes than twice the weapon
´s staging, the projectile shatters. The back-up shield is 3/2, which is not treated as a
'layer' of armor, but rather a part of the field. Power requirement is as mentioned
above. Note that one extra power cell will run this device for one hour

(kinda convenient, no?). This weapon is mounted externally on the arm or torso and
can draw power from anywhere in the suit, but it is more convenient to give each
shield its own power cell.

Okay, so maybe you're on a bit of a budget and can't afford one of our
lovely EMP Shields. Well, we've got an alternative. It's simple, cheap, and
works almost as well. The PA Shield. Basically, we re-designed the basic

armor disc without any of those delicate powered components. Now you can
parry a PA-Monoblade without worrying about it slicing your arm off and it
works well against other hazards too, like 20mm PA-cannons. It's cheaper
and lighter than a full shell of heavy armor but works almost as
effectively, and with the armor already on your PA it will make you
practically bullet-proof. Then there are the offensive abilities. Oh yeah,
it doesn't quite match the knife-type AP ability of a PA sword, and it

doesn't even come close to the PA-monoblade, but for a defensive weapon it
can really thrash. Imagine getting hit with a 1.25m diameter cera-metal
disc with the strength of an PA behind it. You're thinking "Ouch" right?
Well, that's precisely what they'll say, as long as they still can say
anything. For those who insist on having at least knife-style AP we offer a
shield with an arrangement of spikes or blades, as you desire, for only a
little extra (+7,550¥). We also offer custom painting of cammo designs,
insignias, or whatever you would like. (Cost varies, but we have several
"smiley"s in stock, from a large cancelled order, that we're selling at
normal cost, to defray the cost of manufacturing them).

Game notes: What more can be said? It's a big reinforced composite cera-
metal disc, attached to the arm of an PA. Armor 4/4 vs 50% of
all attacks, when it is "readied," by the trooper inside. This is an externally
mounted item on an arm or torso mount (specify front or back for torso
mount, protects against 80% of attacks from that direction). Damage is
(str+8)S, or (str+12)S with blades/spikes on arm, if you want to
put it on the torso it isn't really usable as a weapon unless it has
spikes/blades in which case it just makes grappling attacks.

'Net (ain´t this a surprise). The problem's is the thought-action of Interfaces are just
simply superior than eye-hand coordination, even with GloGo rigs and complex
graphical interfaces. The "Hot Key" pad can be programmed to reduce
key-punching to a bare minimum. Each button can be programmed to activate a

There's a problem with corporations these days. They have no sense of
humor. You try to read office memos, and BAM! You get hit with a Liche.
There goes your life. You can prevent that with NetFuse. Netfuse attaches
between your phone jack and your deck's plug. If the current coming in is
too strong, NetFuse burns out and you lose your signal. This means that a
successful hit from any Grey Ice that attacks either the cyberdeck or the decker will do
no damage! (Not entirely true. There is a ten percent chance that you will take 3L stun
damage.) Black Ice has only a fifty percent chance of hitting instead of NetFuse taking
you out. Netfuse needs to be replaced every time it saves you, but how much is your
life worth?

(NOTE: Netfuse will burn out while disconnecting. Also, Netfuse can only be
used on tabletop or portable cyberdecks, not cellular models. NetFuse
leaves an electrical backwash giving all tracing Ice a -3 on their tracking
roll. Also, one cannot activate a cyberdeck without replacing a burnt
NetFuse.

Okay, you folks have heard of that obnoxious anti-personnel program Spider
Murphy reported in the 'Netguide, which simulated a nasty smell that made
the unwary 'punk vomit. But that's old news... The newest fad on the
Internet is the Audio Virus. If it overcomes a 'deck's defenses, it will
play a sound or tune to the affected runner - at something above percieved
180 decibels. The most nasty and un-stylish thing to hurt your victime with
would be random noises, but I'm sure that the NetWatchers can tell you that
bad music can be very effective, too. Just plug in those leftover 20th-century tapes of
Julio Iglesias or Take That and see your enemies run like weefles! Make a normal matrix
combat attack sequence. For every net success the Audio Virus gets, it reduces the
Willpower of the target by 1.
It's icon is, of course, a photo-realistic stereo system, which, if turned
on, will tremble and vibrate from the noise that it makes. The referee may and should
give a bonus on the roll for sounds/music that would be exceptionally
disturbing/annoying to the victim. A hip techno netjunkie might be particularly
vunerable to Beethoven, while that hardliner Kerry Eurodyne fan might react allergically
to a Beatles song, and Arasaka is said to really hate Silverhand.
If an Audio Virus reduces a runner's effective Willpower to 1 or below, the
runner can't stand the noise and immediately disconnects.

On a side note, this was tried in the real world, where a city administration played
classical music in a park to drive away unwanted hardrock-loving youths
hanging out there. I can't remember the city involved, but it worked.

This a complex utility based on a scrambling and packing routine. This program
encrypts data files and hides them within the code for a virtual reality, e.g. the
scrambled text of a black ops file could be hidden in the code of a virtual
desk in a data fortress. Retrieving the code without a program will involve
going through the programming code of the virtual object line by line and

the data must be unscrambled, which is a chore in itself. The ratio between hidden
program code and the code used for the virtual image must at least be 1:2. Thus 10
Mp of data could be secreted in 20 Mp code (for instance, in the code of an own VR.
For more information on the construction of own mainframes, see Paranoid Animals Of
North America). The main drawback is that the virtual reality's memory size will
unavoidable swell however many Mp are put it in, and an observant netrunner will
undoubtably notice the excess size of the file. Note: the data itself is not visible in the
image, it is in the code where the image data is stored, and the runner must examine
the file to get the data. He cannot simply examine the image itself.

of the net but still stuck watching the pattern, unable to do anything but
stare at the overbright flashes transmitted directly into his brain. The
runner must make a Willpower(8) roll to enter the net within the next week.

the first fetal victims of this program will start killing their parents in 2068.

THE ASSASIN'S GUILD


Somewhere in Switzerland, it is said that a corporate can enter a tavern,
order a drink, and just mention someone's name. Within 3 days, he or she
will have been killed. It's not really that simple, of course; the assasins
are a lot harder to find, and they charge money. Lots of money. However,

they have an appraisal service that will allow one to trade items (weapons,
metals, vehicles, the boss's daughter) instead of cash. The target will be
eliminated within a month, or half your money back.

heavy weapons (very good). Others may vary.

Are you afraid that you're somewhat antisocial? Can't get a date on
Saturday night? This is what Partners, Inc. is for! We run a computerized
dating service for over 20,000 clients in Night City. For 25¥, you fill
out a questionnaire, and your name goes on our list. When you want a date,
we just punch stuff into the computer, check out who matches, and ring them
up. If you're the match, we tell you where to go, who to meet, and what to
do. If you don't match exactly, we'll provide the proper behavior chips to
make sure that both of you have a good time! Connecting with another person
is 50¥ each time. Behavior chip rental is 20¥/hour. Rumors that we have
used "forced stimuli" behavior chips and distribute drugs freely to clients
are totally false. Really.

(NOTE: the Appraisal Network is really a group of fixers who wear uniforms.
They find buyers for the merchandise, and everyone's happy. Many a stolen
object has found its way through the network, sometimes repeatedly. It is

MEYER & MEYER


Meyer and Meyer is a privately-run team of Street Sam run by Julio Rodriguez
and Yi-Hsin Lo. Meyer is their fixer, and there's only one of him. The name was
chosen to give the dependable impression of a law firm. Meyer and Meyer are

dependable, but not in a law firm sense. Their specialty is in no-quarter
revenge strikes against small corporate targets. Their most famous hit was
the 32-story Arasaka Twin Towers in Aix-on-Provence. As one tower had its
floors sequentially eradicated, top to bottom, by high explosives, the hit
team attacked the other building, wiping all the computers and killing 70%
of the employees. Naturally, they charge a fairly high fee. 100,000¥ per
person, per day of planning and attack. Planning time is paid in advance.

The MSP Metroplex is a hardcore place now. Used to be low in crime,


peaceful little place, one of the safest places in the country to live.
Now, it's gotten a new makeover for the 2020s.

Places to Go
The WarZone Club: Located in the Mallplex of America, in the 'burb of
Bloomington, the WarZone is a great place to meet and find
comrades-in-arms, or just to sit back and watch the Exotic Combat -
perfectly legal, too! The drinks are good, the atmosphere chaotic, and the

contacts many. Highly recommended.

A Combat Football Game: The MSP Maulers are nothing like the Vikings of the
old NFL. The Maulers are a highly vicious team, with a lot of talent - they
are the number-one favorite for a
Super Bowl appearance this year. If you're in town, and can catch a game,
do it!

Cliff Road: The street to go to when looking for action, hot 'ware, a good
ripperdoc, or a place to sell off those organs you just cropped. Located in
the once-sleepy 'burb of Eagan, Cliff Road is a seething mass of humanity
with one desire in their collective mind: your money. Anything can be found
on Cliff Road.

The Library: Need to dig up the dirt on someone or something? The Library
is the place to go. Located in the downtown Minneapolis Corp Sector, the
Library has got data in all formats
on the most inane things you can imagine! Info on Tibetian heavy metal
stars of the late 1990s? You can actually find it!

Mystic Lake: This casino is still alive and kicking! They offer the best,
hell, the only gambling in the state. When the Casino Wars started in early
2044, they were the biggest of the group, and managed to not only survive,
but grow as well! The extravegence of this place rivals that of some of
Vegas! Make sure you check this place out! Please note that security is

provided by Arasaka, and cheaters tend to "disappear" quietly.

Places Not to Go
Jail: The cops in the MSP Metroplex are not very nice individuals, as they
are trained and reinforced by Arasaka. Yup, the boys in black have their
hand in this town too... So, watch your back.

Edina: Always an upscale, yuppie city, Edina was one of the first walled
cities in the country. The security is very tight, and security guards
(from Militech) shoot first and ask questions later. Rumor has it that the
security forces use PAs with heavy weaponry, but this has yet to be
confirmed.

Burnsville: The suburb of Burnsville, south of Eagan, is a the Combat Zone


of the MSP Metroplex. The city was heavily damaged by a large fire in 2004,
and never rebuilt fully. The heavy snows and winds that winter did nothing
to help the city, and it is now overrun with vagrants and gutter-trash, who
try to eke out a living on the remnants of the buildings and industry.

Things to Do
Listen to HHH: Happy Harry Hard-On is back! After his release from jail, he
went right back to his pirate broadcasting! An independent operator in MSP
gets Harry's feed live via satellite from Arizona, and broadcasts on 98.5
FM and 990 AM. You can hear Harry's anti-society, anti-corp,
anti-everything diatribe every night at 11pm Central. Jamming is uncommon.

Hireout: The corporations here in MSP are very busy stabbing each other in
the backs - a full-scale corporate war is on the verge of erupting, and all
sides are hiring at very reasonable pay!

Get Custom Chips: An important thing for Techies to do! Sunrise


Microprocessors in the Minneapolis sector can build your custom chip design

in a matter of hours! And their prices are quite reasonable. They have a
service rep in the Mallplex of America that is quite helpful.

Things Not to Do
Carry A Concealed Weapon: This is a big no-no in MSP. The cops and Arasaka
will be all over you like flies on shit. Seriously, though, the police have
an uncanny knack for spotting this and will bust you. You may carry any
weapon out in the open, but anything larger than a heavy autopistol will
get you harassed.

Sleep in the Airport: Not a good idea. More than one traveller has
disappeared after deciding to take a short nap. Rumor has it that there are
cannabalistic cyberpsychos living in the access tunnels beneath the
complex.

Believe Anything in the Paper: The local paper is a load of corporate


propoganda and drivel. If you believe a single word of it, you're weak in
the gray matter. The MSP area has a high amount of pirate media, most of
which is not hard to get ahold of. Some of it has corporate backing, ask
the locals, they'll be more than happy to tell you what's real pirate and
corporate pirate.

Pick Your Nose: But we shouldn't have to tell you that, gato. It isn't
chill.

The Pigs
Ah, now we come to the most important part for you edgerunners. The pigs.
MSP Metroplex's security forces. The indigenous security forces are pretty
well under-funded and poorly equipped, but they are still pretty numerous.
A large Arasaka Security contingent exists, as it is on hireout from a

group of corporations in the area. They will not hesitate to use deadly
force if they can get away with it. They will also ticket anyone for any
violation of the law.

How to Get Out of Town Quickly


There are multiple ways to get out of MSP quickly, which will probably be
required of you at some point. There is a French TGV bullet-train link to
Duluth, and security is mediocre, so this is always an option.
Dirigible and AV services connect to Chicago Port, Des Moines, Fargo, St.
Louis, New York, and Night City. In May of 2056, the MagLev link to St.
Louis will be completed, and in September of 2056, the spaceplane
facilities at MSP International will be activated, providing service to
LEO.

NEW SKILLS
1) PHOTO ANALYSIS: Characters with this skill are trained in reading and
interpreting reconnaissance photographs, particularly aerial and satellite
photographs. Things a good analyst can learn include camp layouts, ground
features, approximate numbers and locations of personnel, weapons and
equipment present, and possible identifications of rank or identity. Large
details (buildings, vechicles) can be identified by an EASY (TN around 3) test. Small
details require, naturally, greater success. INT-based.

2) FORWARD OBSERVER: Characters with this skill are trained in spotting


targets and adjusting fire for artillery of all types. Provided they are in
contact with the firing battery or its fire
control, a forward observer can attempt to adjust friendly fire. For each
round of fire, the forward observer can report and adjust the fire
coordinates by making a successful skill check. Each round of fire that is
successfully adjusted increases the accuracy of the artillery fire by 1, up
to the limit of the forward observer's skill level. If the skill check is

failed, the artillery has fired off-target, and all bonuses gained from the
forward observer are lost and the process must begin again. A forward
observer can also attempt to call friendly fire on a position if he is able
to observe that target point. A skill check must be made to successfully
relay the target coordinates. Once fire has arrived, the FO can attempt to
adjust it normally. INT-based.

3) SMALL CRAFT HANDLING: While Driving/Boat allows a character to operate


most types of motorized water vehicles, Small Craft Handling gives the
character the skills needed to use small muscle-powered boats. These

include inflatable rafts, canoes, collapsible kayaks, rowboats, and small


landing or river crossing boats. Rapids, rough seas, darkness, rugged
landing sites, and the need for speed or silence all require skill checks.
The character can also attempt to make small field repairs. REF-based.

are allowed to keep their own names, so J.J. MacGee is not a household
word. The original corporation, which has been sold to Militech, made
custom ammunition. J.J. Macgee as it is now is primarily a holding company.

Virtuality is one of the younger megacorps in existence. It was founded by


a conglomerate of major entertainment businesses and specializes in the
development and sale of VIrtual Reality Entertainment (and Applications):
Interactive Fiction/Movies, Virtual Theme Parks, NeoMUDs, VR Development
Software, World Simulations for educational/training purposes; you name it,
they sell it.
As VRs are sought-after for entertainment (soaking up all the potential
from computer games, plus alot of what was speant for the flicks in the
last century) and are becoming an increasingly serious threat to plain-
vanilla pay-TV channels, resulting in something you could call "propoganda
war" -- the bad publicity put on the airwaves by these guys would have
killed VIrtuality if they hadn't decided to just buy their own TV network.
After all, customers seem to like to take part in violent splatterpunk or
erotic movies instead of just watching.

Because not everyone has an interface jack, Virtuality also operates VR
parlours worldwide and sell interface jacks and (very!) simple cyberdecks
at a discount -- great if you're out of money, just don't try to hack
anything bigger than an elementary school's computer with these. Many of
their employees are actors/personnel at (ie, IN) their Realities, but they
employ more and more semi-AIs and full AIs; also many of their troops and
covert operatives are Net-Based. Their offices are well- secured to protect
their high-end, cutting-edge VR effects, programming, and AI routines.
There are rumours that they have their hands in high-end Prostie-BBS' and
SimSense "Drug" chips as well.

Logo: Their logo is a red V on a black circle; inspired from the red-
sprayed grafitti "victory" V from a certain 1980s SF TV series.

Friends: Virtuality doesn't have many friends among the other corporations,
except those that own Virtuality stock or are bought by the corporation.
Perhaps their only real ally is Metalogic, specializing in AI research.

Enemies: There's lots of enemies Virtuality has to deal with. Almost all
other big software corporations are rivals. There are some rival SimSense-
Dealers who would like to see Vituality push out of the (illicit, black)

market. However, Virtuality is a very popular corporation, making overt


action against its facilities a big no-no.

Security: As mentioned, security is TIGHT. These guys are known to be even


more trigger-happy than Arasaka. They shoot first and NOT ask questions
later. Their top-secret facilities are better guarded than Area 51 in the
1990s. Their Internet sites are well-plastered with Black ICE, and the AI
research labs are not hooked up to the Net at all, except on the rare
occassions (data transfer in/out), which will be protected by 2-5
Edger-level Netrunners.

PTO CORP.
Author's Note: Here's an outline of a new corp. I figured in a world where
information is power, the authority over who gets to use which information
would be an interesting addition to play. Possible
uses: PTO tries to stop your small-time drug-synthesizing enterprise on
behalf of a major pharmaceuticals researcher; Team hired to destroy records
at PTO during corp war over patent
rights; party racing to patent a new product before bad guys steal it and
patent it themselves, etc.

Patent and Trademark Office


Shortly before the fall of the U.S., it was decided to privatize most

functions of the PTO. The databases improved as people began to be charged
for their use. Firms claiming patent violations in court had to pay the new
PTO to provide the data to back them up. New patents and copyrights had an
accompanying fee. After the fall, the PTO began to take on the enforcement
role as well. Initially bolstered by a large capital outlay from a
consortium of interested corporations, the concentration of
capital has been diluted over time. The PTO works for client companies. All
the same, like NetWatch, it's almost universal. Competing companies pay
their dues, even while trying to skirt
the rules of the Office.

In order for any new patent to be enforced, the holder must register it
with the PTO, which must then approve it. After this point, the PTO
guarnatees to prevent violation of the patent, with a staff of arbitrators
to decided whether there has been a violation. If you do not register your
patent with the PTO, you are responsible for defending it yourself,
including preventing someone else from registering it.

Payment to the PTO is based on the number of patents held, the types of
restrictions required, the length of protection service, and the revenue

particular patent are paid to the PTO. Under this plan, the customer signs
a contract to the effect that, if ever they fail to pay, patent rights
revert to the PTO itself.

The PTO makes a good percentage of its money liscensing rights to patents
that haven been acquired from deliquent customers.

SUNRISE MICROPROCESSORS
Overview: Sunrise is a small corporation based in the
Minneapolis/St. Paul Megaplex, Minnesota, that produces
microprocessors for a wide variety of items. Its main division is
dedicated to the mass-production of microchips, and it has a
smaller division to manufacture custom chip designs.
When: In 2046, a small group of discontent American engineers got together
to form Sunrise Microprocesors in a small office outside of Minneapolis.
