Rationale:
This information is important for students to learn because it allows them to broaden their vocabulary. It
also helps them find connections throughout reading, writing, and life in general. Finding connections
between words will help students with reading comprehension, so that they can respond to what they
are reading.

Objectives:
SWBAT understand the definition of a synonym.
SWBAT manipulate given words to match to their synonyms.

Lesson Opening:
Each student will receive a card with a word written on it.
They will find their match, student with a word on a card that has similar meaning. This will be
their partner for the lesson.

Connection:
Definitions of commonly used words
Words used in writing or read in books words with similar meanings
Finding connections in everyday life and speech

Instructional Strategies:
The class will learn the Synonyms song to the tune of London Bridges. We will choral sing it.
Smartboard activity in pairs (from the opening). Two pictures will be displayed on the board and
students will come up to the board and move the synonyms to the correct picture they are
identifying.
o Next, I will have a picture of a skinny man with a sentence written underneath. There is a
blank where the students can fill in synonyms to describe the man. They will write them on
their white boards and hold them up.
After, I will act out some actions and the students will work in their pairs to think of synonyms for
my actions (close/shut, mad/angry, help/assist, sad/unhappy). They will write them down their
on a white board or a sheet of paper and then share with the class.
Next, the students will work individually on an activity (Synonyms of the Sea), where they have to
cut pieces (boats and oceans) out and glue the matches (synonyms) together on a given sheet of
paper. We will go over this once everyone has finished.

Products:
Students will produce a list of synonyms from the acting activity.
Students will complete the Synonyms of the Sea activity, showing they know what synonyms are
from using hands-on learning.

Assessment:
The individual activity, Synonyms of the Sea, will be collected and checked for accuracy.

Closure:
As a class, we will review what the word synonym means and I will say a few words and
students will raise their hands to say a synonym.
The class will sing the Synonyms song again.

Homework:
None

Differentiation:
For this lesson, there is not specific differentiation for specific cases. If students have questions, I
can answer them, but there will not be any changes made for the product; also because I do not
know the class and students well enough yet, I cannot properly make adjustments.
