Past simple : regular and irregular verb

The past form of be (is, am, are) is was/were.


Regular verbs add ed or d in the past simple e.g. like-liked, want-wanted
Irregular verbs change the form in the past simple e.g. go-went, see-saw
Regular and irregular verbs use:
Positive: Subject + V2 (regular/irregular) + Compliment/Object.
They bought a new car.
Negative: Subject + didnt + V1 (infinitive) + Compliment/Object.
They didnt buy a new car.
Yes/no question: Did + subject + V1 (infinitive) + Compliment/Object?
Did they buy a new car?
Wh- question: Wh + did +subject + V1 (infinitive)?
What did they buy?
