- Trash TV shows are generally tabloid talk shows where the host invites a group of guests to
discuss an emotional or provocative topic and attempt to resolve it.

- Tabloid talk shows originated in the 1960s and early 1970s hosted by people like Joe Pyne, Les
Crane, and Phil Donahue.

- Tabloid talk shows got the name Trash TV because it seemed the producers purposely
made their shows to create controversy.

- Some hosts, such as Jerry Springer, have proudly accepted the label, Trash TV.

Jerry Springer, a.k.a Gerald Norman,
was born in Highgate Tube Station in London,
England. This shelter was being used as a
bomb shelter from German bombing in
World War 2. His parents, Margot and
Richard Springer, were Jewish refugees from
Landsberg an der Warthe. Long after, Jerry

The Jerry Springer Show
The Jerry Springer show was first aired on
September 30

, 1991. It was created to mimic
the show Donahue. The original topics of the
show were political; homelessness, and gun
politics.

In 1994, Springer and his new producer, Richard
Domenick, recreated the show to get higher ratings. The guests
on the show were people who would get confronted on the
stage by their partner or a family member about their sexual
orientation, prostitution acts, or other controversial situations.
The confrontations were mostly scripted shouting or violence.
After this, change it gained so much attention that by 1998, it
was beating the Oprah Winfrey Show, reaching more than 6.7
million viewers.
