&# ' 3eople Li4e What5s "amiliar
Rirginia Satir famously said that the most powerful force in human
beings is familiarityI we have a natural resistance to radical change.
Think about it7 if your body temperature suddenly increased by '0
degrees, or the acidity of your blood dropped by a few ph, you would
die instantly. :our body4mind has a set of controls H balances that
help keep you in a state of e#uilibrium. This e#uilibrium is called
Mhomeostasis..
,hen we encounter change, the Mfamiliarity sensors. in H around our
nervous system starts sending Malert. messages to the brain. The
system then begins to take action to return it to a stable state.
The thermostat on a central heating system may serve as a good
e!ample. :ou set the thermostat to S0 degrees Bahrenheit. The
heating system then checks its thermometer to read the current
temperature. /f it is less than S0, the heating system is activatedI
once the temperature reaches S0, the heating is turned off.
The central heating thermostat is an e!ample of a single cybernetic
loop. The human nervous system consists of thousands of such loops,
constantly sensing the internal H e!ternal environment, H making
small ad%ustments to ensure that the familiar stable state is
maintained.
-ost people have had the e!perience of making a change they really
like, then backsliding to the old behaviour or situation. The familiarity
principle provides one e!planation for this sometimes baffling
phenomenon.
,hen you.ve been doing something new for a while whether it.s going
to the gym, tidying your desk or changing your thinking" its typically
smooth sailing until you start to change. Then your nervous system
sets off the alarm bells, and you start to feel like you can.t be bothered
to do it anymore. This is the signal that it.s working6 ,hen you feel
that Mcan.t be bothered. feeling, pat yourself on the back6 ,hat you.re
doing is working, and you.ve got evidence. Then do it6 2eople like

&6 ' What The Thin4er Thin4s7 The 3ro8er 3ro8es
/n +obert *nton ,ilson.s e!cellent book Prometheus Rising, he models
the mind as having two main partsI a thinker and a prover. The
thinker is e!tremely fle!ible, and can think any number of things. The
thinker can think the earth is flatI the thinker can think the earth is
spherical. /t can think all men are poisonI it can think all men are
essentially good. The thinker can think that women are intuitive and
men are rationalI it can think the opposite. /t can think that there
isn.t enough to go roundI it can think we live in a world of unlimited
abundance. The thinker can think pretty much anything The prover
is much more predictable7 !hat the thinker thinks" the prover proves
,TTTT22".
,hatever the thinker is thinking, the prover will sort for evidence to
support it. /f a person thinks that all homeless people are laEy, the
prover will sort through their e!perience to find evidence to support
that idea. /f they think all homeless people are victims, the prover will
find evidence to support that idea. /f a person considers themselves
to be stupid, the prover will find evidence to show that it.s Mtrue.. /f a
person thinks they are brilliant, the prover will show that to be true.
#hat the thinker thinks" the prover proves ,hile it.s easy to see that
this is the case for everyone else, it.s not always so easy to recognise
that it.s also the case for us. ,hile it.s easy to identify the ways in
which someone else is limiting themselves, the things we believe are
Mreally true. G aren.t theyF
,TTTT22 is a simple way of understanding how beliefs operate in the
human nervous system. ;eliefs are very powerful, helping us to get a
sense of certainty and direction in an unpredictable world. They are so
powerful, in fact, that we sometimes don.t remember that they.re not
necessarily Mtrue..
Tip: /f you want to change your beliefs, first identify the limiting
belief Kg. / can.t rela!", then craft a new counter4belief that
supports you Kg. / can learn to rela! easily". ;ecome willing to
let go of the old belief, then state the new belief, paying
attention to the sensations in your body. *ccept any sensations
of resistance, then repeat. +epeat the process until you can
state the new belief congruently.

Some people use the headline of Mpositive thinking. to deny the reality
of the current situation. This makes matters worse. *cceptance is the
opposite of denial.
*cceptance is a way of Mmeeting yourself at your own map of the

The Top 10 Secrets of Unconditional Happiness

The :rt of Bein1
;ack in 1@@(, when / read my first book about 012 H Hypnosis, / had no idea
of how my life would unfold. / was living in 9!fordshire, working as a pro%ect
manager for a publishing company, and was making a decent living to
support myself and my wife we.d %ust married".
Slowly, / began to apply the principles /.d learned. Some things changed
naturally in my life / got a %ob working for a consultancy and moved to
1ondon", and / began to see results from using the hypnotic principles for
communicating with others.
/ was becoming more willing to engage with the adventure of my life. 1et me
e!plain. ,hen / was working for the publishing company in the early 1@@0s7
/ was good at my %ob, and well4paid for it, but / didn.t feel fulfilled.
/ had a sense that there was something else / was supposed to be doing
on this planet, but / had no idea what it was.
To make matters worse, / didn.t actually believe that / could do anything
else
/ could see how other people could follow their dreams, change %obs, start
businesses, change tracks, find new careers, become entrepreneurs, but /
somehow knew / couldn.t.
/ didn.t have a clear direction for my life, but / wanted one.
/n 1@@<, / attended my first 012 training. Two weeks later, / #uit my %ob and
set up my own business still working as a consultant". / still didn.t know
what / wanted to do, but / knew that 012 had something to do with it.
/n the years that followed, / spent most of my time off and a lot of my
income" on finding the finest teachers of 012 and Hypnosis, and learning
everything / could from them. / moved out of pro%ect management and into
much more people4oriented work, and with each move, my overall sense of
peace and fulfilment increased.

/ could get great results using 012 and hypnosis to help other people make
changes and get what they wanted, but / had limited success using formal

my 012 training. / felt like a page had been left out of the manual.

,hile / knew / was moving in the right direction, / still didn.t have the sort of
peace, %oy and happiness in my life that / knew was possible.
-y frustration with this situation sent me outside of the field of 012 and
hypnosis, to areas as diverse as homeopathy, #uantum physics, provocative
therapy, TBT, spirituality, yogaCmy search was e!tensive. *nd in the course
of that search, / discovered some keys.
The 4eys to s)ccess
These keys were so powerful, that they opened the doors that had previously
been closed to me. *ll of a sudden, the 012 techni#ues worked for me.
*maEingly, these keys also massively increased the power of the work / did
with other people. The funny thing is, many of them were almost like clichUs
that /.d heard over the years, but no4one had ever shown me a way to put
them into practice. 9nce / was able to do this, some astonishing things
happened7
/ began to spend more H more time in the present moment, and less time
worrying about the future and the past.
/ let go of limiting patterns H behaviours. 2roblems /.d struggled with for
years started to disappear effortlessly.

-y direction and purpose in life have become clear they didn.t arrive like
a telegram, but rather emerged as / began to rela! and let go".
/ was suddenly able to make sense of the results /.d been getting in my
life, and make simple changes to start living the life / desired.
/ stopped worrying H started en%oying myself. ,hen / think about the fuA
ture today, it.s with a sense of e!citement, anticipation, and en%oyment of
the life / already have.
/ am being true to myself. -y whole life people said to me 3)ust be yourA
self5, but no4one ever showed me how. 0ow / know.
Bliss0ninny
Today, / spend most of my days e!periencing a deep sense of wellbeing,
knowing that all is well. / had always worried that being in this state would
make me de4motivated, and turn me into a Mbliss4ninny. who sat around
watching TR or looking at the clouds all day, but nothing could be further
from the truth. /.ve accomplished more in the past few years than / did in the
previous ten, and am en%oying every minute of it.
