ive race stops are history, and
after the cancellation of the rounds
in Hungary and Portugal, theres
only one still on the schedule the
title-decider in Germany. What a crazy
season! Before the summer break
the organisation really hit a high with
a race in New York. In the run-up to
it we expected everything and a bit
more fromthis race, and it delivered.
It will go down in history as an amazing
spectacle. But before we arrived in the
Big Apple, the Red Bull Air Race had
been going through a tough phase.

There was heat, sand storms and engine
trouble in Abu Dhabi; the first-ever crash
in Perth (Adilson Kindlemann); and more
weather drama in normally sunny Rio de
Janeiro which led to a race cancellation.
Then there was Windsor, Ontario, which
provided a thriller, with Hannes Arch
going way beyond his limit and Matt Hall
doing the same thing. Both managed to
get away without major damage, thanks
to their superb skills, lightning-quick
reactions and maybe also a bit of luck.
Now its time to race at Lausitz, the
legendary EuroSpeedway! Imthrilled
that theres a race in Germany this year,
says Matthias Dolderer. Its going to be
brilliant to fly in front of my home crowd.
While youre waiting for the action to
start in the skies above, take some time
out to discover whats really going on
behind the scenes of the Red Bull Air
Race and in pilots minds. Yes, we might
be the official magazine, but we havent
yet been served with a gagging order!

hope you enjoy reading this magazine

The race was about survival. I knew we had
to push it to try to get into the Final 4, so thats
what I did. It was probably a little too hard. We
just have to push it like crazy to get there with
this plane. Its a gamble.

REVIEW
new york
The New York Air Race took place above the mighty Hudson River
against a backdrop of Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty, with the
skyscrapers of Manhattan looking on from a distance. One question
dominated the discussions afterwards: did Paul Bonhomme win or
did Hannes Arch lose? The stark analysis shows that Bonhomme
won with a comfortable margin of two seconds from his closest rival
Nigel Lamb, who narrowly took second place from Kirby Chambliss.
Arch was a distant fourth.
But that isnt the full story. After practice and Qualifying, Arch
was the favourite. His Edge 540 V3 looked perfectly at home in the
tight track, and coming off three straight wins, his confdence was
high. Bonhomme had fown quicker in the Top 12 and Super 8
but Arch always saves his best effort for last; except in New York,
where he hit Gate 8. The six-second penalty left him fve-and-a-half
seconds off the pace meaning his fying time was half-a-second
quicker than the eventual winner.
So, what do you call that? Did Arch throw it away by pushing too
hard, or did Bonhomme win with his metronomic, unruffed Top 12
and Super 8 times? Did that relentless consistency force Arch into
an error? Theres no easy answer and for the neutral it didnt matter
at all the frst New York Red Bull Air Race delivered a marvellous,
highly charged, spectacle, and thats what really counted.

PREVIEW
LAUSITZ
For the rst time since Interlaken 2007, the Red Bull Air Race
is taking place over land. The spectacle may be different, but
the competition will be as erce as ever. Suddenly, during the
summer break the German race mutated into the season
nale! The 2008 champion, Hannes Arch, who missed the
opportunity of a historic four-in-a-row series of back-to-back
victories in NewYork will be eager to secure the title, although
his chances of achieving this are quite low, unless reigning
champion and championship leader Bonhomme loses his nerve
and makes a mistake. No doubt, Arch's form and the technical
capability of the V3 are a potent combination. But Bonhomme
is the master of consistency: so, if Arch isnt at his absolute
best, Bonhomme will almost certainly retain his crown.
But, hey, this year isnt a two-horse race. Nigel Lamb
and his MXS-R are right there in the championship mix, but
perhaps for Lamb the priority is a richly deserved maiden
Red Bull Air Race victory. In the last half-dozen races, hes
been second four times. Nigel is hungry for more and has
steadily been closing in. Something about the New York
race track didnt suit either him or his Team Breitling plane,
but maybe EuroSpeedway will be more to their liking.
The usual suspects may be ghting it out for air supremacy,
but there are a few wild cards who might get in on the act. The
obvious name to mention is Germanys own Matthias Dolderer.
Matthias struggled with his brand-new Edge 540 V3 race
plane at the last race, but with time to properly prepare and
iron out a few faults, the 2008 German Aerobatic Champion
will not be satised with anything less than a visit to the Final
4. Meanwhile Michael Goulian will have his new engine here in
Germany. Its the twin of the one that propelled Kirby
Chambliss to a podium nish in New York, despite Kirby
believing it isnt yet operating to its full potential. If one of the
two Americans gets it right, they both have a proven ability
take home a victory. Ready? Lets go! Its time for the nal
round of the 2010 Red Bull Air Race World Championship.

IN THE
TRACK
INSIGHT
Steve Jones, former Red Bull Air Race pilot and
now race co-commentator, takes us through the
EuroSpeedway track. Imagine yourself in the
race pilots position, get ready and start ying.
Be mentally prepared for this track, it is unusual.
Not since 2007 have the racers flown an over-
land course, in fact some of the pilots have only
raced in anger, over water. Put that out of your
mind, though, as you run through the start Gate,
the Chicane is straight ahead, there is no big
turn to reduce your speed, so at 374kph it is
going to happen mighty fast! If the exit fromthe
Chicane is accurate, it will set you up for 540
degrees of aggressive turning that will happen
in the next 20 seconds or so, great news! But
get this bit wrong and you will never catch up
with the lines and angles you require, seconds
could be lost as a result. Many different lines
are available in these, seemingly endless, turns
and any wind will change your options, but
remember to be in the correct Knife-Flight for
the Red Gates and Wings-Level for the Blue
Gates. Only the stopwatch and your video
analysis will allowyou to perfect this part of the
track, so plenty of homework needs to be done
after every flight! Gate 6 to 7 is the only rest
available, but get ready for the huge G-force in
the vertical turn at Gate 7. Abig right bend during
this pull-up will keep you lowand give a good exit
line to Gate 8, but caution, space for the descent
back to race height is limited, so if there is a
strong tail-wind, you could struggle to get down
and level before reaching Gate 9. That would be
a big mistake and result in 2 penalty seconds
being added to your race time, bad news! Now
for lap two! Because of all the high-Gturns, your
race plane will have a little less speed on this lap.
The Chicane will happen slightly less fast and
you will be able to fly the big 540-degree turning
portion more tightly. But because of these
things, be careful not to pull too hard, and use
too much G, as that could risk stalling your wing,
at best that will slowyou down and ruin your day.
Stay light and smooth on the controls, make
certain that any minor errors made on lap one
are not repeated this time around. Stay sharp!

LOGBOOK
Plane trouble, a hard decision and some tough stewarding
NORETURN. Adilson Kindlemann will not
race in 2010, but spend the rest of the year on a
special training programme. The Brazilian, who
has not competed since his accident in Perth, will
join the Red Bull Air Race in 2011. Imfrustrated.
I put my full focus into this sport. Three years
of preparations and then this! But Immoving
forward and taking this positively. After the
accident, the committee and I scheduled a step-
by-step plan to come back. Unfortunately it could
not be done before Germany, but the positive
side of it is, that nowI have more time to prepare
thoroughly for 2011,says Kindlemann.
TEETHINGTROUBLES. Bad luck?
Acurse? After Yoshi Muroyas No 1 plane was
damaged by a ripped-off canopy at high speed in
Windsor, his streak of bad luck continued with
spare plane trouble in NewYork. After the ferry
fight fromCanada to the US I made a hard
landing. The propeller touched the ground, says
Muroya. Replacing the prop and checking the
engine by the manufacturer was not doable until
Race Day, so theJapanese teamhad to pull out.
The No 1 plane was shipped fromCanada to
Germany directly, which gave themenough time
for preparation and modifcation work. Fingers
crossed for Lausitz. Ganbatte kudasai, Yoshi!
RULES. Flashback: Matt Halls wing
stalls duringWindsor Qualifying. The plane
hits the water, but the pilot manages to bounce
it back into the air. Spectators and pilots alike
call it the best fying theyve ever seen. The
MXS-R is slightly damaged, the Aussie misses
the Windsor round and is all set to race again
in NewYork. And then... After a meeting it was
decided that its best for me to use the time in
NewYork to regain my confdence in the track,
comments Hall. The committee allows him
to participate in the training programme only.
Hall: I'll still be competitive and try to get as
many points as I can in Germany. And Ill be safe
and make sure I dont scare anybody again.

PROPELLER
Propeller design is the most important and least
examined aspect of air racing technology.
What is the propeller to an Air Race plane? Its like the tyres on a
racing car, says race pilot Alejandro Maclean. The analogy is simple:
where tyres ona car transfer engine power into forwardmotion, so the
planes engine power is translated into thrust via the rotation of
the propeller. While engine power is frequently referenced as the
differentiating factor, without the right prop, all the horsepower in
the world isnt going to do much good.
MacleanisaformertestpilotforMTpropellers,buttheoverwhelming
choice among the Red Bull Air Race fraternity is Hartzells claw
propeller what Maclean calledthe Golf GTi of propellers.
Its difficult to get a good overall propeller. You can easily have
a propeller that improves your top speed by 10kt, or a propeller with
better acceleration but its not easy to get both at the same time,
says Maclean. The reason Hartzell is so popular is because what they
make is the best of both worlds. Its like a Golf GTi it accelerates well
and has a good top speed. Basically its good at everything without
actually being the best at anything.
According to Maclean, the ideal situation for each race teamwould
be to arrive at a track with a variety of propellers, and simply fit the
one best suited to the conditions. Id have props for hot weather
(and low-density air), a prop for slow tracks and another for fast
tracks and another for tracks with lots of turns.
The reasonthe racers dont turnupwithmultiple propellers is down
tocost, but alsoexpediency. Aircraft arent designedfor aswift change
of propeller. It isnt likeafive-secondpitstopinFormulaOne. Our hubs
and attachments havent been designed to work in that way, says
Maclean. The idea is that once you fit a prop it stays there for a very
longtime. If wecanchangethehubdesignandadapt it for fast changes,
then maybe we will see a wider selection of props used in the races.
The propellers used by the Red Bull Air Race are of a composite
construction, manufactured fromcarbon-fibre, foam, wood and steel.
They are super-strong with the ability to withstand the high loads and
G-forces of an air race. The limiting fact on size is a necessity to keep
the tips of the aerofoils at subsonic speeds.
At the hub the propeller might be rotating at 600kph, but the
tip might be doing 900kph, explains Maclean. Go about the speed
of sound and the whole aerodynamic concept changes and it will
stop you like a parachute. Also, it sounds like a cat wailing. Thats
what limits the size. Without that restriction, the bigger the prop,
the morepush youll have through the air.
While size is limited, the variations within that for propeller
design are myriad. A propeller aerofoil is basically a wing, flying
perpendicular to the direction of travel, says Maclean. Instead of
lift its generating forward motion, and there are hundreds, if not
thousands, of different shapes that can be used: the length, the
geometry, the radius of the prop. Its all crucial.
There is, says Maclean, still space to evolve, as the current
generation of race propellers are designed for aerobatics rather
than racing. And I think maybe the time has come to build proper,
specific race props. What do we need fromthem? Everything!

ATTITUDE
After being disqualified in Abu Dhabi, I thought the gap would be too big to recover and the season was done. The plan was to go with the flow and not stress about it. You have to forget about everything and trust your body and mind to do the right things out there. I thought maybe I could win a couple of races, though as it worked out I won three in a row and was back near the front. But Im not going to change my approach now.
NUTRITION
I eat a good diet. It can be tough in some
places, but usually I can get a salad. If I was
to eat normally I would gain weight, and
adding all the sport to that would mean Id end
up looking like a body builder. I have to fight
against that. Fortunately I love salad and eat
tonnes of it. But I also enjoy meat good meat
and cheese, and I hate junk food. During the
race weekend Ill take vitamin and mineral
supplements as well. I think if my body is in
shape, then my mind will be in shape too.
WEIGHT
Im three or four kilos heavier this season than
I was last year. Before the 2009 season I was
training to lose weight, because the ideal for a
pilot was to be as light as possible without losing
energy. Now we have the 82kg [minimum pilot
weight] rule you dont need to do it any more,
and Ive gained a few extra kilos. Its muscle
but you dont really need the muscle to fly.
SPORTS
I love sport, though Ive never been someone who
played team sports. Of course I played football and
stuff like that in school, but I think I am too much of
a free spirit and free-thinker to play team sports at a
high level. Ive always done ego sports instead. I think
most of the pilots get involved in sports when they
can. I think it will come to a point where the closer the
competition gets, the more fitness will come into play.
SLACKLINE + SURFING
I have a slackline set up in the yard at my house on Oahu. Its
good to wake up in the morning and walk the line. Again, you
have to focus to find your balance and you have to be there in
the moment. Its good mental preparation for coming here.
After that, its only five metres from the yard to the ocean
and I can paddle or go surfing. Im not a great surfer, but Ill
paddle out, wait for the perfect wave, and if it doesnt come,
Ill paddle in again. Thats the great thing about it for me.
CLIMBING
The exception to my not playing team sports is
climbing. That definitely is a team sport because its
two people working closely together. Its all based
on respect and responsibility, not on whos best or
about giving everything to win. Its about playing
together. The good thing about climbing is that you
have to dive in and really focus on it. You cant climb
and be thinking of other things; you have to be in
the moment. You have to feel your muscles and
concentrate on what youre doing. If youre not
focused, you lose too much energy and you cant
move. If you dive into the whole thing, it works.

Matthias Dolderer grew up under, in and with planes. To push himself into the
sky and glide away comes as naturally to the Swabian as sitting, walking and
talking. Surely this is a pilot born to dominate the Red Bull Air Race?

oo-hoo! After one year of developing and
testing, my new Edge 540 V3 is finally
ready. Cool design! What can I say; Im
in love with my new Lady. Thats what
Matthias Dolderer said four days before
the Red Bull Air Race in New York.
I dont know what happened. I need
a time-out! Maybe Ill go back to my old
Edge. I just dont know what went wrong.
I have to figure out how we have to handle
certain things in the future. Thats what
he sounded like after the race in New York.
The almost boundless enthusiasm for
the blonde goddess didnt last that long.
Is there something wrong with her or was
it just a momentary, bitchy behaviour?
The Edge 540 V3 is wild and fast,
thats for sure. That she can put to good
use Hannes Arch has been proving since
the beginning of the season. Well, that
may be the case thanks to a powerful
engine. Comparisons are completely
inappropriate in most cases. Be that,
as it may, the simple rule is: dont jump
to conclusions, think things through
slowly and carefully. Dont get stressed.
Just before the challenge over
the Hudson some sensation-mongers
whispered that MD took his V3 to NY,
saw HA and just wanted to fly him into
the ground. If Hannes and I happen to
fly the same lines, youll see whos faster
him or me. If hes still three seconds
faster then, somethings not right, said
Matthias before the first training in
the Big Apple. The German aerobatics
champion (2008, unlimited category) is
bound to fly good lines; after all he has
proven that he can easily make it to the
podium with his old Edge (third, Barcelona
2009). But somehow the V3 has let MD
down. I dont know yet what will happen
to the old Edge. If I can make a good deal,
maybe Ill sell her. Money obviously its
a Swabian talking. But lets not be hasty,
lets get to know the guy in the shimmering
race suit before passing judgement.
The saying goes that money plays
a major role in the lives of Swabians. So
how does the race pilot from Tannheim
economise? Thoughtfully. I calculate very
strictly. Being a Swabian, I like saving and
trying to get things as cheaply as possible,
without spending money needlessly.
Michael Schumacher and Matthias
Dolderer are having dinner. Who tries
to pay first? Michael Schumacher is a
nice guy, I flew with him once. I dont
know him well, but he seems to be a
normal person. Just like Sebastian Vettel,
a cool, down-to-earth dude.
Dolderer openly states that the money
in his bank account cannot compare to
that of a Formula One driver. I dont
Woo-Hoo!
Yee-Ha?
have a yacht or a jet or helicopter. Thats
another league. Theres a completely
different industry behind Formula One
racing! Schumacher obviously also has
had the know-how, talent and luck. He
was in the right place at the right time.
However, the Air Race has grown so much
in the last few years that we might be on
our way to becoming like Formula One.
Now were going to ask him a cheeky
question and see if hell answer. How
much does an Air Race pilot earn?
You can make a living from it. But
a car mechanic, hairdresser or gardener
can also make a living from their
earnings. I cant buy a house, a yacht
or a helicopter. Im far from living the
lifestyle of a Formula One driver. Does
that bother him? To me money is just as
important as being content with what you
do and what makes you happy. Both have
top priority, but now that Im thinking
about it, money comes second. The crucial
thing is what you do rather than doing
something you dont enjoy just for the
pay. So, if on a scale from 1-10 satisfaction
is on 10, money would be on 6 or 7.
We now have a feel for how materialistic
or not Matthias Dolderer is. But what kind
of a guy is he? Is he something like the
European Hugh Hefner? Cards on the
table: playboy yes or no? Hm, Playboy

be? No. Theres no would or could!
Only is or is not. So, black or white...
is he someone who goes to the limit,
regardless of the consequences?
In general everybody has to know
for themselves where to stop, how far
their will and skills can take them. Its
true, you try to see how far you can push.
How can I handle the curve, fly it more
tightly? Although I tried it in Windsor,
twice, I got out in the Chicane, because
I realised it wouldnt work. Of course
that is frustrating. A decision for a Safety
Climb Out is made in the blink of an eye.
You tell yourself: OK, this is it, get out!
Its really difficult. Everybody has to find
the right point in time for themselves.
Athletes always want more, to go
further, give top performances, beat
themselves and outshine the others
its their nature. Giving up early because
its too risky, on the one hand, deserves
respect, but it also makes you feel like
the biggest loser. An own goal that
crushes your pride.
I tend to say: Rather be a chicken
once than dead for the rest of your life.
No one is invulnerable. It happens so fast,
were so close to the ground, you can never
say nothing will ever happen to me. You
have a little over a second on the race
track. To make sure everything goes right,
you have to go through every move as
often as you can before you start. You have
to know where and how you want to roll
the plane. Where fast, where slow, where
do you pull to the left, where to the right.
As soon as you pass the first Gate, you
know whether what you planned in your
head will work or not. If the first Gate
works out, the rest will follow.
Does that apply to the EuroSpeedway,

Principally water is water and land is
land. I dont see a big difference. The
Air Gates lead you. You dont look down
at the water to see how high you are.
But surely a home race always
makes a difference and influences the
performance? Mentally its a race like
any other to me. Its additional motivation
and boost if there are a lot of German
fans, friends and sponsors.
What about expectations? I do
feel the pressure of wanting to please
everyone. But safety comes first. Its a
great challenge to design your life in such
a way that you have the capacity to fly
safely. You put yourself under a lot of
pressure by saying you want it to work
out perfectly. Its cool to be the best, but
sometimes it might be better to come in
second. If youre second, you can always
rise to first, but if youre number one you
can only go down. First and foremost,
I want to live up to my own expectations,
if I manage to do that, everyone else will
automatically be pleased. Because I want
to make it work for everyone.

The V3 almost feels like ying the old Edge. She has
a smaller rudder, elevator and tail. You need more
physical power to pull the stick back in order to bring
about the same G-forces. Also, the weight lies more
in the front, which is likely to require a readjustment
regarding the stick force. Overall, the V3 should lose
less power in the curves and take up speed more easily.

seen in the Red Bull Air Race. He often seems to be
a man apart, though like everyone else fying this
weekend, its passion that drives him onwards.

how to maintain it. Learning new ways
was difficult, and perhaps thats why
our team hasnt progressed as fast as
some others. But year by year we are
doing more. Today, we dont have
problems, but we do have difficulties
because we dont know the market and
we dont have all the connections with
people in the industry. We need to find
the right people, explain what we need
and continue to observe everything
that goes on around us. We need to
observe, and we need to understand.
Peter Besenyei has a Hungarian plane
now, isnt it about time a Russian
manufacturer built a competitive
plane for the Red Bull Air Race?
My situation is a little different to Peters.
Ive known him for more than 20 years
and hes very experienced in flying
things like the Edge and the MX but
my experience before coming here was
only with Sukhoi aircraft. It isnt an easy
time in Russia for aviation. I think many
Russian pilots would be happy if Russia
just started to produce aerobatics planes
again. The Sukhoi 26, 29 and 31 are nice,
but they dont produce those anymore. If
they start that up again, many people will
be happy including me. As for someone
building an air race plane I dont know.
Is the Red Bull Air Race work or
pleasure?
Aviation needs love whatever you are
flying. It isnt possible to do this only
for money. Its a complicated profession
and it takes a lot out of you; it takes part
of your soul. I cant imagine somebody
doing this just as a job, rather than
doing it as something you love.
Is the same true of aerobatics?
Yes. You fly because you love to fly.
Its impossible to fly, whatever kind of
flying you do, if you do not love to fly.
Thats the only point. And theres no
money in aerobatics anyway.
You were the last pilot crowned as
USSR Absolute Aerobatic Champion.
What does that mean to you nearly
two decades later?
I managed to jump on that train as it was
leaving! To be the Absolute Champion of
the USSR was an enormous honour. Its
f theres one thing that drives the
Red Bull Air Race absolutely crazy, its
when its referred to as an aerobatics
competition. Is isnt: its a race, pure and
simple. But still occasionally a reference
is made, and has to be denounced,
usually through gritted teeth. And yet
aerobatics is there, buried deep down
in the DNA. This sport isnt old enough
or simple enough to have generated its
own supply chain; it still relies on pilots
crossing over from aerobatics, indeed
insisting they be the very best in the
world. Hence the list of honours that
precedes each pilot sounds like a herald
from a medieval joust: the Champion
of Germany; the Champion of Great
Britain; the Champion of Europe; The
Champion of the World. The list goes on.
And on that list, no name is greater
than that of Sergey Rakhmanin, double
World Champion in the unlimited
aerobatics category, European Champion,
Absolute Aerobatic Champion of the
USSR. Sergeys peers in the Red Bull
Air Race hangars will suggest that in
terms of harmony with, and mastery
of the plane, Sergey is the best. There
is, however, a but. Into his fourth year
of racing, the Russian hasnt managed
to replicate that dominance out on
the race track. It isnt easy, hell say,
with something in between a wry
smile and a grimace.
Has the transition from aerobatics
to racing been difficult?
As a two-time World Champion in
aerobatics, why am I not so good here?
Thats what youre really asking isnt it?
All I can say is that aerobatics and racing
are different. Even the philosophy behind
them is different. Aerobatics is geometry
and precision, racing is only about time.
Invite somebody from figure skating to
try speed skating, and even if theyre a
champion, theres nothing to say they are
going to get a good result straight away.
Is it just a question of competing
against the clock, or does the change
from flying at 100m to flying at 15m
require some adaptation?
Its a huge difference, and it takes
additional mental effort to adapt but
there is more to it. This is a technical
sport also. I have to be at 100 per cent
and so does my plane. In aerobatics, if
Im flying with an engine thats giving
away 15hp, I can still get a good result.
Do that here and its goodbye!
You fly an MXS-R rather than an Edge
540. What made you chose the MX?
I chose this plane because I think it has
good potential for racing. At the time
I had to order a plane, it was clear that
the MX was ready to race, but an Edge
would require modifications after I got
it from the factory. Actually I look at
the results of Nigel [Lamb] and in my
opinion he has the fastest plane this
season. I think the MX is good and
I imagine if I had an Edge, the question
would be why not an MX?
Youve been dogged with a few
technical problems though
Last year yes, unfortunately we had
trouble. We had over-speed issues,
and sometimes problems that were
my fault, but they werent actually
problems with the plane itself; they
were mostly engine issues that could
have happened in an Edge or any plane.
Is it harder to be the Russian team?
Do you have difficulty resolving
technical issues, are travel
arrangements more awkward?
It can be a little bit difficult, maybe
more difficult than for anyone living in
the UK or United States, because there
can be a communication problem. But
for me the most difficult thing has been
learning the ways of the [Western]
aviation world. I learned to fly with
a different set of traditions, a different
plane and a different set of rules for

something that many, many pilots would
like to be. I could only have become a
pilot in a country like the USSR. In Russia
today I couldnt do it, because it takes
an incredible amount of money. Back
then it was free so thank you to that
epoch. At the time the USSR and the
USA were giants, and to be Champion
of the USSR yeah Im still very
honoured to hold that title.
If the world hadnt changed, or if
you had been born 20 years earlier,
where would your flying skills have
taken you? Would you have been
a cosmonaut? A test pilot?
Firstly, I dont have any regrets about
anything that has happened in my life.
Im very happy that I became a pilot and
an aerobatics pilot. Im happy I have done
some commercial aviation, and happy to
have flown in the Red Bull Air Race. Im
very glad of the way my life has gone.
If we were to step back, I think I would
probably have tried to be a test pilot
but for me it doesnt make a lot of sense
to think about what might have been.
History doesnt like phrases like that.
Were racing in Lausitz this week.
Your birthplace is just up the road in
Chemnitz though it had a different
name back then do you think of
yourself as a local boy?
Hmmm When I fly to somewhere
like Frankfurt, and part of the route
is over Eastern Germany, then there is
something there which stirs my soul. My
mother and father were living there in
the Cold War years, and I was born there,
but Im not a local boy, at least not in my
head, though there is something real
about being here that touches my heart.

very smart and he thinks a lot about

So, I think maybe my brother is slightly more aggressive than
I am, but only a little bit, this is howJosef onka charactarises
his younger brother and teamboss Martin, the race pilot.
It sounds impressive. But how on earth can brothers work
so closely together and spend so much time with each other
without occasionally falling out? Whats the secret? Nature,
genes, great upbringing or pure control?
Josef is two years older, my only brother. What can I say, we
stopped fighting in elementary school. Were very good friends
and like to spend time together. For me it was a really natural
step to ask him to join my team as a manager, as hed helped
me a lot already before, when I was doing aerobatics. Josef
is absolutely the right person for this. He works really hard,
he likes his job and the best thing is that I can talk to him
about everything, says former Czech Air Force fighter pilot
Martin onka when referring to his brother, an economics
graduate from the university of civil engineering.
Im a little bit of everything, says Josef. Im cameraman,
photographer, webpage and graphic designer, writer,
technician, organiser... Yes, at the moment it is a lot of work
and honestly, I dont know if it is the best way to continue like
that in future. You really have to do things perfectly to be at
the top and at the moment there are too many different tasks
in order to be able to reach perfection in the details.
Josef, a perfectionist? So is Martin, whos one of the smoothest,
most skilled pilots in the track, and hes also a very quick

learner. My brother is my biggest critic. He tells me if my pose
or smile in a picture looks weird or if I use a word too often in
an interview, says Martin. His feedback comes immediately,
its honest and thats really good.
All good so far, but surely this team has some flaws? We could
make something up easily and tell you that the onka brothers
dont speak a word to each other once they leave the team
hangar and race surroundings in the evenings. We could tell
you that there is a technician whos working under the strict
direction of the brothers whos simply being polite and keeping
his mouth shut, because he needs his job in order to feed five
hungry stomachs back at home, but that he actually hates it. We
could also tell you that close to unbearable language problems
are dogging the team. That the onkas in fact need an interpreter
to translate their Czech outbursts so that their South African
technician can understand what they want. We could, but we
wouldnt be telling the truth. If you want to know what really
motivates this team, and keeps them heading towards their
goal of Air Race glory, keep reading.
Of course, sometimes I really need to be the boss, says Martin.
And, because he is my brother I suppose, he wants to discuss
everything with me and come up with suggestions of how to do
it his way. And then again, I want to do things my way. These
are the moments where it can get tough, but we do it like I want
in the end. However, we never shout at each other. Im not the
kind of guy who gets emotional easily. So everything works
fine. Oh, no, actually there is one thing we have a problem with
that needs to be solved. We have brand-new stickers on our
toolbox and the biggest mission is to teach Gordy to put a carpet
or a rubber surface on it before he puts his tools on it. I am

afraid that we will damage the stickers too soon otherwise. So
this indeed is a big problem No, I am only joking.
Martin onkas third on-site team member is Gordy, aka
Gordon New, the chief-technician. The 32-year-old rookie
was searching for a technician who already worked in the
Red Bull Air Race. Not the easiest option, but Martin was lucky
and found a South African who was based in England and had
worked for Steve Jones (retired
in 2008) in 2005 and 2006. I
got his phone number and
called him and the funny thing
is that Wade Hammond, Paul
Bonhommes technician, picked
up the phone.
Wade and I are great friends.
Weve known each other for
11 years now. And we used to
work together at the same
flying club, reveals Gordon,
who says that Wade doesnt give
away any secrets as to why
Bonhommes aircraft is so fast.
The big question though is, how can he manage to work where
theres such a strong family bond? That was a concern of mine,
yes. I didnt really know, also because both of them being Czech,
whether I would be an outsider, because they would speak
Czech, but they make a big point of speaking English when Im
around, which is nice for me, because they are obviously doing
that for my benefit. They are both great guys to work with,
very nice to each other. This just wouldnt work in my family.
If I worked with my sister... 10 minutes and wed start a fight.
So, Im quite interested in how they keep it up.
When Gordy said yes to his comeback to the Red Bull Air Race
after a three-year break, he knew that there was a lot of catch-
up work to do and one thing that concerned him was that
Martin was from the Czech Republic. I didnt know how good
his English would be! I reckoned that I was talking to him
about something very technical and he didnt give me a lot of
feedback, so I wasnt sure if he got it. And then... the next thing
he does, he goes and does exactly what youve just talked about.
Martin learns very quickly. And just the way he works through
stuff, hes very technically minded, very logical and he has a
really good memory as well. When you see him going out flying,
he learns from the mistakes hes
made in the previous run and
applies it. Everything is very
precise, very clean, very
smooth. Hes also very polite, a
very nice guy and in control of
his emotions. I think hes going
to be an incredibly good race
pilot.
Nice words, and praise indeed
for the potential of a pilot who
plans to be the best of the best
and win the Red Bull Air Race
World Championship title as
soon as possible.
Sure at this stage this is just a vision. We have to buy a new
plane, change a lot of things. We will have a new sponsor next
year, so maybe we will also have a new plane, says Josef, whos
working on the teams future strategies. We are planning just
one or two years ahead. But this season after getting the first
point at the last race in New York, wed like to gain some more,
which would be perfect. And for next year were aiming
somewhere in the middle of the standings.
Fact is, the Czech Team onka has more fans than the rest of
the competitors, at least on Facebook. And dont forget about
Martin, whos pushing hard to get his old, virtually unmodified
Edge 540 somewhere near the top 10. If you ask us... wed bet
that the brothers and the old fox wont need that much longer to
get what they want and where they want to go.
IF I WORKED WITH MY
SISTER... 10 MINUTES AND
WED START A FIGHT. IM
INTERESTED IN HOW THEY
KEEP IT UP.

nyone who thinks that technicians are not
as competitive as their pilots definitely
hasnt spent much time around the Red
Bull Air Race temporary runway. This is
a team game, fought tooth and claw in
the hangars just as much as it is in the air.
It shouldnt be too difficult getting rival
technicians to argue the merits of their
own aircraft and belittle the competition
theres certainly enough sarcasm and
friendly insults flying around the mess
hall. But thats all part of what makes
this an entertaining place to be and more
than simply a job at an airfield. When it
comes to looking at these things coolly
and on the record, technicians tend to
be analytical by profession and open-
minded by choice: theyre very good at
seeing the other guys point of view.
Craig Andrews and Martin Barth
should have more to argue about than
most. Andrews, technician at Team
Breitling prepares Nigel Lambs MSX-R;
Barth is responsible for the Hamilton-
sponsored Team Ivanoff Edge 540. With
an honourable exception for the new
Corvus Racer, they are about as different
as two planes in this championship could
be. However, as it turns out, they have
fewer disagreements than you might
expect. Fortunately they do have some
The MSX-R was conceived as a racing
plane; the Edge 540 for aerobatics. Is
that not a disadvantage for the Edge?
Martin: Hmmm first of all its worth
mentioning that the new Edge V3 has
been developed as a race plane, but yes,
our Edge was developed for aerobatics
and we had to do a lot of modifications
to get a race plane out of it but there is
a positive here: we can make modifications
if we want; on the MX, if you want to
change something, it takes a lot of work.
So I think its a good thing about the
Edge, because when new knowledge
becomes available, you can try out the
latest theories with relatively little work.

but the whole stability and feel of the
aircraft has changed. I think it has been
a good move, and while it may not be
rolling as fast, its more comfortable to
handle and Nigel gets more pleasure from
flying it. With the full-length aileron the
MX was capable of about 420 per second.
That went down to about 380, but the
winglets have raised it up to around 400.
Martin: We are around 420 of roll
per second we havent adapted our
ailerons for racing, were still basically
set up as an aerobatics plane.
Does that suggest the MX is still
a work in progress?
Craig: I guess it would be. Ours was
one of the first MXS-Rs, built in 2008
and theres a lot of feedback theyve
taken and used for development. Theres
nothing wrong with that: maybe the
aircraft didnt start out as good as it
could be, but thats what development
is all about. The Edge has 40 years of
development history: I think Nigel and
MX have done pretty well getting this
one up to speed in a few short years.
Martin: The Edge is established, but
it isnt finished. In terms of a racing
career its still young, and you can see
the direction its going with the V3,
which has a smaller cross-section of
bodywork to reduce resistance. That isnt
necessary in aerobatics, which is more
about power, but in racing its something
that is obviously being considered.
Is the V3 a better racing plane than
the V2?
Martin: As shipped from the factory,
the V3 is better. Its lighter and has
a better shape: but planes like the one
we fly have been modified to the same
level as a V3. Wade [Hammond, Team
Bonhomme technician] has been
working on his plane for three years;
it has had a lot of optimisation work.
Our plane has been worked on for
two years and it also optimised with
a totally new shape of fuselage. So
in reality there isnt much difference
between when the factory delivers with
a V3 and what we do ourselves to a V2.
Weve talked about which aircraft
is easier to fly, but which one is
easier to work on?
Craig: Ive only worked on the MX,
but its pretty easy. Putting the wing
on and off is a two-step job. I have to put
it on the ground and bring the fuselage
over the wing and lift it up, whereas the
Edge comes in over the top and its done
in one step. But Id say its 50:50.
Martin: Id say the MX is easier to work
on! There are some things that are not
very helpful though. For example, if
you have to open the cabin. I can open
my whole cabin; I can take everything
out to work on it. The MX is closed.
But for the usual work the assembly
and disassembly of the plane I think
the MX is easier. Actually, part of our
big modification push during the
winter was to make our plane easier
to assemble and disassemble. Its still
a longer job than it would be with an
MX, but its easier and quicker than it
was before. For example we can now
remove the wing without removing
parts that previously needed to come
out of the aircraft. So the differences
between the two are not so great.
But who is packed up and ready to
go earliest on a Sunday evening?
Martin: Ah, yes. If we start at the same
time, hell finish first because the MX
is easier and the parts are lighter. For
me disassembling an Edge is still more
complicated, there are many things to
dismantle its intricate.
Craig: We have two panels to remove
to get the wing on and off. Thats pretty
much it!
But is the downside that there are more
difficult-to-access parts of the MX?
Craig: The only time we have to get right
down inside is when Riedel [global
supplier, e.g. responsible for on-board
camera transmissions] want something
done. And frankly I just let them get on
with it themselves its not my problem!
The only other awkward place to get
to is below the fuel tank, and thats not
too tough. Dont believe the stories,
the MX is a nice plane to work on
Youre both very complimentary
about the opposition. Dont you have
anything spiteful to say at all?
Craig: um the Edge is a 40-year-old
bucket of bolts and tubes and its made
of paper?
Martin: Why not just call it a flying
tractor? As for the MX, well it certainly
a very nice-looking plane. Does it fly too?
Craig: I have to agree with Martin!
But because the MX was designed and
developed as a race plane, there really
isnt that much we would want to do!
The basic performance is there and we
dont necessarily want to experiment
with it. Obviously there is set-up work,
and a lot of the internal adaptation has
been done by Hux [Nigel Huxtable,
former Team Breitling technician] to
take out some weight, but the actual
aircraft, its pretty good. We only
really need to do the small stuff.
Just looking at the aircraft, the thing
that really stands out is the different
philosophies of wing design
Craig: Yeah. I can sit on our wing.
Martin: I can sit on mine as well
but Im not going to.
The history of the Edge goes back
30 or 40 years, and while the modern
Edge is very different from the original
plane, the wing structure is very similar.
Its a very good wing with a profile
that works well for racing. It has a
great record of reliability and strength.
Its a very serious, highly approved
structure. It doesnt bend like the MX.
Craig: Ah, I think a flexible wing is
what you want. Obviously there are pros
and cons, but overall I think an amount
of flex is a good thing to absorb some
of the high stresses in the Red Bull
Air Race. Our G-rating is pretty high
higher than the Edge certainly. Maybe
thats detrimental in encouraging a pilot
of push harder, but Id prefer knowing
I have a wing that can withstand higher
forces. Obviously the design is new, and
doubtless it will evolve over the next few
years, but for a start, its a good effort.
Martin: I accept that the MX has a more
innovative design and construction.
Regarding the degree of bending,
a strong, non-flexing wing is what you
need for real aerobatics, and maybe this
isnt so important when youre flying
a race, which isnt just about aerobatic
manoeuvres but I like strong wings!
The latest MXS-Rs seem to have a
different aileron set-up to the original
ones, and Nigels have been changed
since they were first seen. Did the MX
arrive with a basic design flaw?
Craig: We shortened our ailerons for
a number of reasons, one of which was
stability. It has decreased the roll rate,

Race Day in New York (actually its the
first training day, as the original first was
cancelled due to bad weather). Pter
Besenyei comes bobbing out of the
morning meeting a briefing as experts
call it. Hes wearing MBT shoes decent,
classy, almost invisible rocker soles. Even
this early in the day, THE pilot of the
Red Bull Air Race is wearing a kind of
glowing smile, but hes not as god-like
as you would think. Hes getting his
breakfast: a deep, black hot drink! Will
his crumpled-up look vanish after the
first sip? Unfortunately, we often get
to know rather late in the day when
we have to be at the briefing the next
day. The schedule changes quite often.
Anyway usually a day at the racing
field goes from 7am until 8pm. If the
aircraft doesnt play along, its longer.
Its crucial that we arrive at the briefing
dead on time in order to discuss the
entire flying procedure. If youre late,
you wont fly. Its as easy as that, says
Pter Besenyei, legendary co-founder of
the Red Bull Air Race.
9:30 A.M. Fizzz. Pter opens a Red Bull
can. Slowly, his cheeks turn rosy and he
straightens up. After our briefing my
team of technicians is getting the aircraft
ready. Meanwhile, Jimbo (Jim Reed, his
chief technician) and I look at the race
track over and over again, trying to figure
out where I can save time, fly turns more
closely. Jimbo is like a coach to me. Hes
awesome, very professional.
10:30 A.M. Pter is entering the catering
tent, getting himself another ice-cold
Red Bull can. No, were not writing this,
because someone told us to. Firstly,
nobody can tell us what to write. Secondly,
he quite often does grab a can, and hes
not pretending to drink hes actually
consuming energy. Being tired is not
an option here. Mr Besenyei puts on
his G-race suit. He clears his throat. This
is something weve noticed: he always
coughs slightly when hes drawing on
his reserves, before flying or before hes
about to say something important.
Usually the first training flight is rather
smooth. You have to get a feeling for
how its going. I never fly the first rounds
at full throttle, as normally its a slower,
easy-going flying session exempt from
penalties. Pter clears his throat and
steps into the natural spotlight in front
of his hangar. A quick snapshot with
three beauties wearing uniforms and off
he goes, towards the Gridstand and his
Corvus Racer 540.
11:20 A.M. Pter is in his plane.
11:22 A.M. He puts on his helmet, Jim
straps him in. He pulls, tightens, shakes,
until pilot and seat are as one. If the
harness wasnt fastened tight enough,
the pilot would go smashing through the
cockpit as a result of the high G-forces
involved in this kind of flying.
11:24.40 A.M. The cockpit roof is closed.
11:24.50 A.M. The engine comes to life.
The propeller is rotating. The sun heats
up air to 32 degrees Celsius, even in the
shade. Airport Linden, in New Jersey is
not only the Race Airport, but also the
home airport for the private pilots of
Angelina Jolie and Harrison Ford.
11:25 A.M. Aircraft No 5 rolls onto the
runway.
11:35 A.M. Pter the Great takes off,
heading for New Yorks greatest Lady.
In a minute, for the first time, he will
fly into the track that lies in front of
the famous, but very sensitive, skyline
of Manhattan.
11:40 A.M. First try: 1:16.25. Oh well.
No top time, but a clean, smooth,
conservative flight exactly as he
predicted. Onto round two. *BAM!*
After the blue-marked horizontal gate,
BACKGROUND
Is he fying high all the time, getting fun,
fame and all the girls? We follow in the footsteps
of Hungarys Pter the Great for one day.

right on his way into the Chicane, he
pulls up his plane. Why?
11:47 A.M. Going at 300kph, the Corvus
Racer 540 has hit a bird and is now
standing in parc ferm. Theyre checking
the wing. Besenyei, known to be the
ultimate gentleman, is upset after having
experienced the first bird strike in his
career. I was about to fully attack,
when all of a sudden I saw a flock of
birds coming right towards me, exactly
at my height. It all happened so fast.
I was completely focused on the track
and gates. And then I suddenly saw
these four dots, right in the middle of
the turn into the Chicane. Im sorry for
the bird I hit, but it could have ended
worse. If the bird had hit the propeller,
the canopy or the spades [two little
plates attached to the wings lower
surface, which are crucial for the
handling of the aircraft] Im upset!
Why didnt the guys from Race Tower
tell me? They must have seen the birds
on the track and should have warned
me. Are they even paying attention?!
11:53 A.M. Third interview after the
incident.
12:32 A.M. Pter is having lunch.
Its the usual, maybe a little less, when
Ill be flying directly afterwards.
12:53 A.M. Afternoon chat with Matt
Hall in front of Matts hangar.
13:04 A.M. Pter says goodbye to
Matt and marches over to his own
hangar to analyse and bone up.
13:26 A.M. Hes back. Gesturing with
important looking people in front of
the hangar. Is this about the bird strike?
Most certainly.
14:15 A.M. Start motor, onto runway,
take-off. Hes back in the air again.
14:51 A.M. Back to the hangar. He
grabs a chair, clears his throat and looks
expectantly at the flat-screen where
Nigel Lamb is already flying through
the start gate. Its quite bumpy out
there. Its difficult. You can easily hit
a pylon, Pter comments.
15:07 A.M. Rewind, forward, pause,
play. Pter examines his runs.
15:15 A.M. Team Besenyei is scheduled
for compensation training today.
15:19 A.M. The plane is pushed out.
15:27 A.M. No 5 takes off.
15:59 A.M. An obviously worn out Pter
Besenyei has landed, taken off his G-suit
and takes it to the maintenance team.
16:30 A.M. Interviews.
17:20 A.M. Fan-time. Keep signing,
smiling, stay friendly.
18:00 A.M. Well have dinner in
the catering tent now, and then well get
back to the hotel as soon as possible.
I still have to analyse training flights
with Jimbo, compare them all and try
to find the best line. We take a look at
all of them, even the slowest. Then
around midnight its bedtime.

So it wasnt quite what we expected,
the life of this aviator no girls in the
Jacuzzi, but a little fame, splendour and
style, definitely lots of fun and flying high
very often, despite all the hard work. The
one thing our day as a close observer of
Pter Besenyei wasnt, was dull.

The MXSR is a new breed of aircraft representing
the latest in state-of-the-art design and technology.
The plane was designed using advanced computer
solid modelling with emphasis on aerodynamic
eiciency. It stands alone in that it is constructed
entirely of Aerospace-grade carbon-ibre which
provides superior strength and durability never
seen before in an aircraft of this type.
CORVUS RACER 540
This aircraft was especially developed for the Red Bull Air Race.
The airframe is built using chrome-molybdenumtubes in a
TIG-welded construction. The wing, empennage and fuselage
covers are high-strength composite parts primary composed
of pultruded and pre-impregnated carbon-ibre. All in all, a
promising high-performance rocket.

Arevolutionary anti-G suit for the
Red Bull Air Race World Championship.
The G-race suit was introduced at the 2009
Abu Dhabi race stop. Its the irst professional
G-protection for civilian race pilots.
HOWITWORKS: Four water columns in the luid
muscles build up pressure around the body under high
G-forces, causing the non-stretch fabric to contract.
This, together with interactive muscle straining and
breathing techniques, assists the pilot in keeping
oxygen-rich blood in the head and upper muscle areas
of the body. All race pilots are recommended to wear
the G-race suit. If one of themdecides not to wear it, a
penalty weight of 6.5kg is added to the planes seat.
FLUID MUSCLES
Two at the front and
two at the back. The
tubes are each illed
with 1 litre of water.
FABRIC
Twaron/
Nomex, a
non-stretch
fabric.

THE RESULTS IN QUALIFYING. THE SLOWEST FROM QUALIFYING FLIES FIRST
RULES
The Red Bull Air Race World Championship is an
international series of races with the objective to
navigate an aerial race track featuring air-illed
pylons, known as Air Gates, in the fastest possible
time, incurring as fewpenalties as possible. The total
length of the racetrack is approximately 5km.
CORRECT FLYING
LEVELFLYING
The Air Gates marked in blue must
be passed in a horizontal position.
KNIFEFLYING
Air Gates marked in red must be
passed in a vertical position.
CHICANE
The Chicane consists of single
pylons which must be passed
in slalomlight.
TURNINGMANOEUVRE
The turning manoeuvre at the end of the course can
either describe a horizontal turn or a climbing (tilted)
turn up to a pure vertical light path including roll. It
has to be lown inside the safety area.
DISQUALIFICATION
The following can result in
disqualiication: exceeding the start
speed limit of 205 knots (380kph)
through the start gate (GPS ground
speed as indicated on the device
EFIS in the cockpit); not fulilling the minimumpilot
weight of 82kg including compensation weight
(2 per cent margin); exceeding the maximum
G-load factor of 12G; any formof dangerous lying,
such as lying too low or crossing the safety line, as
well as a deviation fromthe predeined race track.
DIDNOTSTART(DNS)
If a pilot misses his slot, for whatever reason,
he is not permitted to take part in the race and
it is recorded as a DNS.
SAFETYCLIMBOUT(SCO)
If a pilot decides at his own discretion to
discontinue lying the race track due to safety
reasons and he communicates immediately via
radio the wording Safety Climb Out or obviously
discontinues lying in the race track because of
safety reasons, it is recorded as Safety Climb Out.
SCO has the same consequences as Disqualiied
with respect to participation in the Flying Sessions.
DIDNOTFINISH(DNF)
If a pilot decides at his own discretion to stop lying
the race track for other reasons than mentioned
under SCO, it is recorded as Did Not Finish. It has
the same consequences as Disqualiied with
respect to participation in the Flying Sessions.
PENALTIES
NOTSWITCHINGSMOKEON
A 1-second penalty is incurred if the race plane
is not emanating smoke during the race (from
smoke on call until passing the inish gate). This
penalty is given whether a technical problemis
ascertained or not.
EXCEEDINGTHEMAXIMUMENTRYSPEED.
A 2-second penalty is incurred when a pilot
exceeds the maximum entry speed of 200
knots (370kph) through the start gate (up to
and including 205 knots).
INCORRECTLEVELFLYING
(2 SECONDS)
The pilot deviates fromlevel light
by 10 or more.
INCORRECTKNIFEFLYING
(2 SECONDS)
The competitor deviates from
vertical light by more than 20 or
tilts his plane to the wrong side.
FLYINGTOOHIGH
(2 SECONDS)
The pilot passes the Air Gate or
chicane too high.
TOUCHINGANAIRGATE
(6 SECONDS)
The competitor touches a pylon
with the wing or propeller.
