October 31, 2014

The Honorable Barack Obama
President of the United States
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
Washington, DC 20500

Dear President Obama,

On behalf the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda (NHLA), a coalition of 39 of
the nations preeminent Latino rights organizations, we again write to you (see
our previous letter regarding Latino Attorney General nominees dated October 14,
2014) to offer our unequivocal support for Thomas Perez to be the next Attorney
General of the United States.
Although our nation would lose an outstanding Secretary of Labor, the
Department of Justice would be gaining an exemplary leader whose work as chief
of the Civil Rights Division at the Department of Justice is well documented. His
work in protecting the civil rights and human dignity of those who have suffered
from human trafficking, hate crimes, bullying in school, racial profiling, and
abuse of power by law enforcement is the type of leadership we need at the
Department of Justice. During this critical time in our nations history, when
voting rights are being eroded and public safety is at risk, Tom Perez is
particularly the right choice to protect the right to vote.
His track record of working with numerous community stakeholders and
Congress in a pragmatic, bipartisan way to achieve meaningful results is evident
in his having been confirmed twice by the United States Senate.
Like other Latinos serving in your Cabinet, he is an American success story. The
son of Dominican immigrants, Mr. Perez worked hard and focused on excelling in
education and became the first in his family to graduate from law school. More
importantly, after achieving his own success, he has consistently focused his
energy on helping others achieve the American Dream.
We believe Secretary Perezs significant record of accomplishment throughout his
career and during his time as Assistant Attorney General reflects the values he
would bring to the Department of Justice and instills the utmost confidence in our
membership, of his ability to serve as our nations chief law enforcement officer.
For these reasons, the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda respectfully urges
you to nominate Thomas Perez as the next Attorney General of the United States.
