Name has two different spellings with two distinct meanings
Hardwar and Haridwar
Har means "Lord Shiva" and Dwar means "gate
Hence, Hardwar stands for "Gateway to Lord Shiva
while,
Hari means "Lord Vishnu". So Haridwar stands for "Gateway to
Lord Vishnu

Rishikesh has been a part of the legendary 'Kedarkhand'
Lord Rama did penance here for killing Ravana.

Nearest Airport is Jolly Grant Airport, located at Dehradun. The
airport is situated at a distance of just 18 km from Rishikesh. The
closest international airport is located in Delhi - the Indira Gandhi

Triveni Ghat
Evening aarti of Goddess Ganga is performed at Triveni Ghat. Triveni is a
bathing Ghat where people wash their sins by taking a dip in the holy
water of sacred Ganga River. It is believed that the three streams of
Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati are flowing together underground at this
point. Pinda Shradha is also performed at Triveni Ghat.

Neelkanth Mahadev:

It is on of the main attraction of Rishikesh. It s a 450 ft long hanging bridge
on the river Ganga which was built in 1939. According to myths and legends
Laksman, brother of Lord Rama crossed Ganga River on a jute rope from this
point. The bridge gives a magnificent view of the Ganges, greeting you with
the cool breeze from the river.

It is situated on the summit of the mountain across the sacred Ganga River.
According to mythology this is the place where Lord Shiva drank the venom
produced during 'Sagar Manthan' which turned his throat blue and was thus the
place was named as Neelkanth. Neelkanth and Mahadev are names of Lord
Shiva.

The Bharat Mandir is the oldest temple of Rishikesh situated near
the Jhanda Chowk. Rishi Rabhya did his penance at this holy spot
and the place is devoted to Lord Vishnu. Bharat Mandir celebrates
colourful spring festival called 'Basant Panchami'.

The National Highway no. 45 connects Haridwar to other cities of the state as
well as other cities
The nearest domestic airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun which is a
located 35 km from Haridwar. Indira Gandhi International Airport in New
Delhi is the nearest International Airport.
The Haridwar Railway Station located in Haridwar is under the control of
the Northern Railway zone of the Indian Railways. It has direct links the
major cities of India such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Indore,
Jaipur, Ahmedabad but it lacks direct connectivity to major cities of Central
India namely Jabalpur, Bhopal, Gwalior and Nagpur.

Har ki Pauri

This sacred Ghat was constructed by King Vikramaditya in memory of his
brother Bharthari. The most sacred ghat within Har-ki-Pauri is Brahmakund. The
evening prayer offered to Goddess Ganga at Har-Ki-Pauri is an enchanting
experience for any visitor. A spectacle of sound and colour is seen when, after the
ceremony, pilgrims float diyas and incense on the river, commemorating their
deceased ancestors.

Chandi Devi Temple

The temple is dedicated to Goddess Chandi. It was constructed in 1929 A.D.
by the king of Kashmir, Suchat Singh. The temple is a 3 km trek from
Chandighat and can be reached through a ropeway.
Maya Devi Temple

This ancient temple of Maya Devi, the Adhisthatri deity of
Hardwar, is considered one of the Siddhapethas and is said to be the
place where the heart and navel of Goddess Sati had fallen. It is one of
few ancient temples still standing in Haridwar, along with Narayani
Shila temple and Bhairav Temple.
Pawan Dham

A modern temple, made entirely of glass pieces. The temple
was constructed by the effort of Swami Vedantanand Ji
Maharaj and the institute located there is growing under the
leadership of Swami SahajPrakash Ji Maharaj. People
from Moga in Punjab have put considerable efforts and
money to erect this place.
RAJAJI NATIONAL PARK
For wildlife lovers, Haridwar is home to the Rajaji
National Park, which is the amalgamation of three
sanctuaries of the Shivalik range. It has a wide range of
elephants, tigers, leopard, jungle cat, Himalayan yellow
throated marten, samber, cheetal, barking deer, wild boar
and several species of birds.
