Here is a 45 minute lesson on Guy Fawkes Night/Bonfire Night. It was
made for a Middle school class (age 13-16). A word of warning; the first part of the lesson requires plenty of listening and ideally a co-teacher whos happy to translate some parts for the students to ensure understanding.
Id suggest familiarising yourself with the story of the gunpowder plot first (there are notes on some of the slides for you).
LESSON: o Explain that this is an English celebration. o Go through the PPT explaining the story. o Explain the festival and what we do now using the PPT. o Play the bomb game pretty self explanatory in the PPT but students choose a numbered barrel which asks a question. If they get the question right move the slide on which will reveal how many points the team has won. If they are wrong click the X button which will play a sound. Then click the house button at the top left to return to the slide with the barrels on.
The lesson aims to keep the students engaged with talk of hanging, drawing, quartering and torture (it worked for ours!).
I wouldnt suggest doing this for low level students unless your co- teacher helps to explain. I had one co-teacher that really enjoyed explaining, and translating more of what happened. The students stayed entertained throughout the whole class. Another co-teacher didnt do this and the lesson didnt work so well.
