Chairmans Chat
Hello again

Well thats another season over with three excellent runs
in October, special thanks to Dave Stokoe & Ian MacNeish
who did their first runs for the club. If you have an idea
for a run but are a bit unsure of what to do let me know,
we have experienced runners who are happy to help.

How has your car survived the season? Have you devel-
oped a worrying noise or leak? Judy had brake problems
on 5/10, I had brake problems on 12/10 but not as seri-
ous as Judy and now the vibrations have taken their toll
on my tailgate, which is currently held on by one hinge
and the lock.

I think we have probably had one of our fullest and most
varied event calendars for a long time but we only seem
to get the same faces, and cars. So we are going to ask
you what you want from this club. We have 112 club
members, and 104 Backworth members, but there are a
lot of you we dont see at club nights or on runs. Given
that I havent had any complaints about what the club
provides maybe we are doing alright. Elsewhere in the
newsletter and also on the website will be details of how
to complete our survey.

Wingrove & MG Newcastle
Wingrove motor company are pleased to bring the all new MG to
the North East. Wingrove was founded in 1925 by John Myers Dal-
kin Snr a local cattle auctioneer. Wingrove pride themselves on be-
ing a family owned business, with five generations in the business.

tating WW11 and the major changes in the automobile industry,

Survey
As you may already know, as a club we organise a number of runs each
year. These runs are open to all members (and guests) and take place
at pre-arranged dates throughout the spring summer and autumn.

We are always trying to expand/improve on what we do and we would
greatly appreciate your views/opinions so that we can plan next years
runs to suit the membership needs more closely and hopefully attract
more members to the regular runs.

To help us with this we would like ask all members to complete a short
survey. It is really simple to complete and should take up no more
than 15 minutes of your precious time. Most answers require you to
simply click on one or more options. but here is provision for more
detailed comments, which would be really helpful for us.
You just need to click on the following link which will take you
straight to the survey or go to the club website

http://kwiksurveys.com/s.asp?sid=cqzvi4ccn8nwp38441778

The survey is totally anonymous and a summary of the responses will
be fed back to all members at a future meeting and/or on the website.

If you are not interested or not able to take part in runs at all, could
you please still take the time to respond and at least answer the first
and last questions.

The questionnaire will remain open until 25th November. If you have
any problems you can contact Peter Hyde
on survey@mgnorthumbria.org

Thanks in anticipation for your interest and help

This man owned & drove the same car for 82 YEARS. Can you imag-
ine even having the same car for 82 years?

Mr. Allen Swift ( Springfield, MA ) received this 1928 Rolls-Royce
Piccadilly-P1 Roadster from his father, brand new - as a graduation
gift in 1928.

He drove it up until his death last year ..... At the age of 102!!!

He was the oldest living owner of a car that was purchased new.

It was donated to a Springfield museum after his death.

It has 1,070,000 miles on it, still runs like a Swiss watch, dead silent
at any speed and is in perfect cosmetic condition. (82 years ) . That's
approximately 13,048 miles per year (1087 per month)

As some MGN members will
already be aware, I am a mo-
tor race marshall. For those
who are not sure what this is,
we are the people you see in orange who come onto the track to deal
with any incidents that occur, such as break downs or crashes.
Marshalls do this voluntarily i.e. we dont get paid and can volunteer
for meetings at any circuit in the country. Well, this year I and another
marshall, Bill, from my home circuit at Croft decided we would apply
to marshall at the Le Mans 24 hour race. Again, as many of you will
already know, I have attended this race for the last 10 years together
with Les and Pam Davison, but always as a spectator only.
So what was it like to be a commissaire at one of the worlds most
famous events? Qualifying takes place from 6.00 pm until midnight on
the Wednesday and Thursday evenings prior to the race, which began
at 3.00 pm on Saturday 14th June. Having spent the Monday and
Tuesday nights on site with Les, Pam and all our friends from Den-
mark who we meet up with each year, on Wednesday morning Bill and
I moved onto the post we had been allocated to where we would stay
until Sunday. This happened to be Post 19 (there are 65 of them)
which sadly was where the fatal crash involving Alain Simonsen took
place in 2013. Happily, I can say that nothing like that happened on
the post this year . To give a full account of the week would take up far
more space than is available here so I thought I would just run through
our timetable for the race. Continued on page 8
8

Saturday
1.30 am Get to bed. Wonder if Les is still in Tetre Rouge Bar, just
across the track from us. (He was, until well after 2 am)

7.00 am Attend post briefing then back to bed as we arent
rostered until 6 pm.

10.00 am Give up trying to sleep.

3.00 pm Watch the start of the race then have a lie down for a
couple of hours (a bit noisy though!). Manage to
miss the only rain which fell during the race.

6.00 pm On standby i.e. not actually on post but available with
overalls on in case anything big happens. Take the
opportunity to have dinner. The (mostly French) marshalls
have been coming to this same post for well over 20
years and even bring their own chef!

9.00 pm Finally on post as the light starts fading. Still nice
and warm though. Nothing happens although blue
flagging with the cars going past you at about 170
mph and only a few yards away is rather interesting.

Bill and me with
our French chef.
The frog is Bills
mascot, Cadwell.
9
Sunday
12.00 3 hours downtime so take the chance to have first
proper shower in 3 days.

2.00 am On standby. Dont feel tired at all so just sit chatting
with Bill and having a coffee or two.

4.00 am Back on post. Still not tired. Watch the sun come up into
another lovely day. The post consists of 3 points spaced
at intervals and manned by 2 marshalls at each point.
Fortunately at one of these we are able to see the
giant TV screen so can keep up with what is hap
pening in the race.
6.00 am 2 hours downtime so finally get about 1 1/2 hours
sleep.
8.00 am Standby again. Time for some breakfast.
10.00 am On post. Again, incident free.
12.00 1 hour downtime so able to have some lunch.
1.00 pm On standby for 1 hour.
2.00 pm On post for the final hour of the race. Now clear that
the race will be won by Audi again.
3.00 pm End of the race. Unusually, this year the cars come
round once more on a victory lap. Being actually on
post at the end means we get to go out onto the
track and wave all our flags as they go past. Every
one congratulates each other on a job well done.
