Dear Second Grade Families, Welcome to November, and to a new, somewhat shortened, week of exciting learning! I hope everyone is beginning to adjust to our recent time change. Im eager to hear all about students weekend adventures.
Parent-Teacher Conferences A reminder that parent-teacher conferences will be held this Thursday, November 6 th from 1 pm to 5:50 pm, and Friday, November 7 th from 8 am to 1 pm. Thank you to those families who have already reserved a twenty-minute block. The link provided by Mr. Miller will close at the end of the day tomorrow, November 4 th . During the conference time, we will be discussing how your child is doing academically and socially. If you have any topics and/or questions that you would like to discuss at the conference, please use the attached paper to write them down, and return it to me at your earliest convenience. This will enable me to gather information and resources necessary to help answer your questions.
Batten Bui l di ng Its official--construction on the new Batten Building is complete! Students had a front row seat to last weeks ribbon-cutting ceremony, and were beyond excited to have PE in Peabodys brand-new gymnasium. Featuring basketball hoops, bleachers, an electronic scoreboard, skybox, and our very own panther emblem sealed into the floor, the students could not wait to break in the new athletic space. From scooter relays to games of line tag and fishy-fishy, the kiddos have been having a blast!
What hast thou done? Thou hast mi staken qui te, and l ai d the l ove j ui ce on some true l oves si ght. (Oberon to Puck, Act 3) Our study of Shakespeares comedy, A Midsummer Nights Dream, continues to generate deep discussion. Recently, we learned of Pucks big mistake. Having charmed the wrong Athenian, Lysander is now pursuing Helena. What will come of this blunder? How will the plays love web become even more entangled? And what of Titania? Last we read, she had fallen in love with a donkey! This week, students will analyze the ever-changing character relationships. Im absolutely thrilled that the students look forward to our Shakespeare time each week! Im excited to see where our discussions take us next!
Investi gati ng the Past How do we learn what we know about the past? Sometimes history is passed from one generation to the next through its oral tradition. Other times, people may have a written history, and by studying what has been recorded, we can learn about how people lived long ago. We also learn about people from the past through the objects left behind. Like detectives, archaeologists dig up clues to help solve the mystery of ancient life. Archaeologists then put the pieces of the puzzle together to create a picture of what life was like long ago. This week, students will don their archaeology caps as they analyze artifacts from ancient China. We will also investigate Emperor Qins Terra Cotta Army.
Wri ti ng: Focus on Revi si on The students have often heard me exclaim, A writers job is never done. As the quote by Ernest Hemingway would also suggest, we are always learning to better hone our craft as writers. This week, students will learn the process of revisionadding, removing, replacing, and rearranging details to further refine ones writing. Students will consider the following questions as they revise their work: -Have I left the readers with any questions? (Who, What, Where, Why?) -Have I used descriptive, vivid details in my writing? Will the reader be able to see the action unfold, hear the characters and sounds of the environment, feel the emotion? -Does my writing flow? Is there a natural pace as I read my piece under my breath? (Or do my sentences seem staccato and choppy?)
Heres to another week full of inquiry and new discoveries!
With Love, Ms. Fox

We are all apprentices in a craft where no one ever becomes a master. November 3, 2014
