Chameleon and The Very Foolish Tortoise by Eric Carle. We will be focusing on under- standing the authors central message by an- swering who, what, when, where and why questions. In writing we will be focusing on creat- ing good paragraphs that include a topic sentence, three-four good details and a closing sentence. In grammar we will focus on what make a perfect sentence (capital letters, periods, question marks or exclamation points.) In math we will focus on adding and subtracting fact families. We will also work on identifying whether to add or sub- tract when solving word problems. In my second grade class, we will have social stud- ies for two weeks and then have science for two weeks. I do this be- cause I enjoy teaching in units and children retain more information for tests when learning eve- rything at once instead of mixing the two subjects up. We will begin with Unit 1 in social studies which is all about rules, leaders, cities, towns, and sub- urbs. Homework will begin this week. Children are responsible for math homework, the back side of a math fact sheet, spelling tic-tac-toe sheets and reading logs. Spelling homework only needs completed 3/4 nights but students are welcome to choose four activities if they want. Please get them a notebook or writing paper so they can complete these activities at home. I have paper at school but they arent going to remember to get it everyday. The spelling tic-tac-toe sheets will change weekly and they will be due on Fri- days. They are worth 6 points each week as part of their spelling grade. Please time your chil- dren on their math facts at home. If you notice they are on the same facts for awhile, you need to purchase flashcards and make an effort to practice with them at home. Poetry folders will come home on Mondays. They are to stay in their back- packs or at home during the week. Please read the poem once per night as part of the nightly reading log. On Tues- days, students will bring home their reading text book. Please read the story of the week and return on Wednesday. On Wednesday, students will bring home a book bag. This book bag will contain leveled readers and selections the chil- dren have made from the classroom library. Please, please, please dont lose these books, especially the ones from the curriculum. :) Fill out the nightly read- ing log and return it on the following Monday. Reading logs will look different sometimes in order to keep the stu- dents interested in filling them out. I will upload a generic tic-tac-toe sheet and reading log to the website if you happen to lose the papers sent home on Monday.
