Explore: A Closer Look


Reading: We are reading the first Story in our Reading Series, A Fine, Fine School by Sharon Creech. We will be focusing on story structure and looking at elements such as characters, setting, conflict and solution. We will also review authors purpose and genre. Be sure and rd return your childs signed reading log DAILY! We are asking all 3 graders to read 20 minutes every night. There will be a quiz on Friday on the story and skills covered.

Mapping Our Week & Beyond

Writing: Writing Workshop For the next two weeks, we will be writing a small moment piece about a favorite memory. We will also be learning about writing complete sentences and forming paragraphs. On Monday, students will share their Me Bags to help them brainstorm topics. Math: Addition/Subtraction We will continue to review basic addition and subtraction facts this week. We will look at missing quantities, fact families, and word problems. There will be a basic fact quiz on Friday.
Social Studies: Geography We have begun with a geography review of the continents and oceans. This will help the students as they learn about the European colonists who settled South Carolina later in the year. We are also learning the names of our city, state, country, and continent. This is not as easy as it sounds. The study guide came home Friday and there will be a test on Wednesday. Science: Rocks and Minerals

Geologists get ready to excavate neat facts about Rocks and Minerals! We are beginning our first study in Science. This unit will last for approximately 3.5 weeks. We will be exclusively studying the three types of rocks.. They are the following: igneous, sedimentary, & metamorphic.

Please return all forms that you picked up at Orientation as soon as possible. If you can, please write your childs CAR NUMBER in his/her belongings (backpack, lunchbox, coats, etc.). This will Remember to join PTA as soon as possible. We are looking to get 100% membership. It costs $5.00. This is a great
help them to be quickly returned if they ever go missing. way to support the education of your child.

The school is encouraging students to send in their own pair of headphones for the computer lab. The headphones

should be sent in a Ziploc bag with the students name on it. Dictation Sentences will be on the newsletter for the first nine weeks.
