Curriculum Corner

Language Arts: This week we will continue our non-
fiction unit. In this unit, students will be exploring text
features and organization of non-fiction texts. In
Writers Workshop, we will be revising and publishing
our Realistic Fiction stories.
At Home Extensions:
Read non-fiction texts at home. Review the
order of the paragraphs. Ask your child, Why do
you think the author chose to organize the book
this way?

Math: The week we will begin our money unit. In this
unit, the students will count collections of coins using
pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and half dollars to
determine their values. The students will also learn to
represent and write the value of money using the cents
and dollar signs.
At Home Extensions:
Have your child count coin collections at home,
then write the amount using both the $ and
signs.
Give your child a story problem using money
and ask your child to make change.

Social Studies: This week we will be handing some of
the teaching over to our American Symbols experts! The
students will learn about some of our American
monuments and symbols from their classmates as they
share their home-projects and create their very own
American Symbols Books.
At Home Extensions:
Read books about the Lincoln Memorial,
Washington Monument, American Bald Eagle,
White House, Jefferson Memorial, the Liberty
Bell, and the Statue of Liberty.
