Course Description:
The student will learn about the management of individual and family resources such as
finances, food, clothing, shelter, health care, recreation, transportation, time, and human capital.

Course Purpose:
The purpose of this course is to focuses on consumer practices and responsibilities, the money
management process, decision making, and the impact of technology on personal finance.

Class Meeting: Online (6 weeks)
Prerequisites: Grades 10-12, computer with Internet access.
Prerequisite skills: Students must be familiar with Microsoft Office 2007 or 2010

Course Learning Outcomes:


Program learning outcomes define the knowledge, skills, and abilities students are expected to
demonstrate upon completion of an academic program. These learning outcomes are regularly
assessed to determine student learning and to evaluate overall program effectiveness.

apply management, planning skills, and processes to organize tasks and responsibilities
analyze the consequences of an economic decision made by an individual consumer
compare types of loans and discern criteria for becoming a low-risk borrower
investigate bankruptcy laws, including ways to avoid bankruptcy
compare types of bank accounts available to consumers

explore how to be a prudent investor in the stock market and other investment options
apply management principles to decisions about insurance for individuals and families

Learning Environment:
This course will take place entirely online. The following is the course website;
ww.wedmodo.com. All assignments and quizzes, will follow the schedule given in the Topics
section of the course syllabus. All assignments are located on the course website and should be
handed in according to the instructions and course schedule located website.
If for any reason you have trouble accessing the website or submitting work, please contact
me at Jessica.clough@tylerisd.org, I will try and answer your questions in less than 24 hours.

Grading Policy:
All assignments must be completed by the assigned due date in order to receive full credit.
Grades will be determined on the following scale, based on percentage of students total
accumulated points to the total possible points for the course.
90-100%=A
80-89%= B
70-79%= C
Below 70%=F

Evaluation Activities:
Participation:
I expect each student to engage in a communication with his/her peers during the semester.
Communication modes include discussions, chats, and email. There are 20 participation points
available (averaged into the daily grades) during the 6 weeks.
Quizzes:
Quizzes will be administered 4 times throughout the course to check your comprehension of the
course material. Quizzes will be timed, with 60 minutes available.
Completing assignments:
A description for each assignment will be provided throughout the course. Points awarded will
be based on criteria provided for each assignment. All assignments will be completed and
submitted online through the Moodle assignment feature.
The majority of your grade will come through application assignments. There will be a total of 5
Topics, each containing multiple assignments, including discussion topics, and quizzes.

Academic Integrity:
Academic integrity is a responsibility of all faculty and students. Faculty members promote
academic integrity in multiple ways including instruction on the components of academic
honesty, as well as abiding by university policy on penalties for cheating and plagiarism.
Academic dishonesty includes both cheating and plagiarism. Cheating includes but is not limited
to (1) using or attempting to use unauthorized materials to aid in achieving a better grade on a
component of a class; (2) the falsification or invention of any information, including citations, on
an assigned exercise; and/or (3) helping or attempting to help another in an act of cheating or
plagiarism.
If caught students will receive a 0 for the assignment and the appropriate administrator will be
notified.

Late Work Policy:


Late work is unacceptable for full credit. Students will be given plenty of time to complete
assignments. It is the responsibility of the student to complete assignments on time. Work turned
in one day late can be turned in for a grade of a 70. The highest you can receive for an
assignment which is 2-3 days late is a 50. After 3 days late work will not be accepted.
Medical and Other Concerns:
Please take time and make the effort to advise me if you have difficulties which require my
attention to properly evaluate your classroom participation and activities.
Any student who has any form of special arrangements (whether it is due to religious conflicts or
disabilities) students must contact the teacher as early as possible in the semester. Once verified,
the course instructor makes the necessary accommodations.
